lady gaga's impact is similar to britney spears' back when she first came in?
do you think its similar to britney spears' back when she was the biggest thing in the late 90's and early 2000's. now were seeing lady gaga do it in the late 2000's and early 2010's. but can her impact continue the way it is throughout the whole decade?
britney in just 3 years into music she had sold over 37 million records and that was before had turned 20 years old. lady gaga so far in just 3 years into music she has sold so far over 25 million records. since we now live in a world of just singles selling and you'll get an artist once in a while that sells albums and lady gaga is one of the few who not only sells her singles but her albums as well. her first two albums were a gigantic success. her third album is also despite some mixed reaction for not continuing on the same material she used in her earlier stuff. her singles right away go platinum. hopefully lady gaga doesn't have a peak yet because she's right now on the right path to being an icon. britney had her peak after 6 years into music with in the zone but after that britney had personal problems but has been able to overcome it and has been able to re-establish her career again as britney had one of the highest grossing tours of all time back when she released her comeback album circus. let's hope gaga doesn't have a breakdown like britney spears. |

I think Gaga is too headstrong to have a breakdown, and her family (especially her Dad) would tell when something is up and stop it right from the first signs.

You don't understand how big Britney was back then. She was EVERYWHERE, you couldn't go a few steps without seeing her on every billboard, every guest appearance, every television interview, every magazine. It was Britney mania. She was right up there with Spice mania and Leo mania. |

No way. Even at Gaga's peak (2009) she was nowhere near as big as Britney.
Gaga is big, but pretty much on the same level as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pink, Ke$ha etc. Britney had her OWN level. |

No. Apart from perhaps Angelina Jolie, Britney was the biggest star in the world then, up to and including her breakdown.
I don't think it's as easy to say the same about Gaga. |

gaga has her own level. rihanna should be on a level between beyonce's or janet jackson's.

I get what you mean but comparing gaga to jj is a whole other ball game lol but in terms of impact i do get what you guys mean gaga is huge as it was when she first came out but really i don't think you get how huge britney was and all it took was a schoolgirl outfit and one of the greatest pop tunes ever

Lady Gaga got big, but not to the scale Britney did.
Britney was HUUUGE, like she'd never have duetted with Beyoncé so early in her career, she wouldn't have needed to (I'm not saying Gaga did, but that kind of thing just wasn't for Britney) Plus let's not forget, Baby One More Time and the album shifted millions of albums so quickly, Britney came from nowhere (so long after Mousekateers), Gaga was around for a bit and built up a bit of a name for herself online before Just Dance. Gaga's impact was huge, particularly in recent times, but I think Britney's easily eclipses her. |

both have had albums sell over a million in their opening week sales. britney sold 746,000 copies with her 3rd album. while gaga sold 1.1 million with her 3rd album. with gaga's 4th album i'd like to see gaga sell 700,000 copies but considering how born this way got feedback it would be luck to sell 400,000 in the opening week sales.

^ Gaga's fanbase is numerous, strong and dedicated. I'd say she'll debut with very strong sales for a few albums yet, certainly unlikely that she'll go from 1.1 million to 400k. Especially when - if I remember correctly - 500k alone was shifted in the first day (US). That's fan front loading, and I doubt they'll be disappearing anytime soon.
If they play their cards right, she could manage a million again. Wheel out the mega promotion, but more importantly ensure that it has 2 bonafide hits beforehand. We were discussing this in the AT, and it was suggested that waiting till the 3rd single to release the album would be smart. Debut sales aren't her problem anyway, the challenge for her is to win back the casuals she may have alienated to keep momentum. |

No Gaga is big but Britney was much bigger when she started out. Her first two albums were so successful, the sales were crazy. In this day and age though when so much music is pirated I doubt we'll ever see debut albums selling as well at BOMT did again.

i think when gaga released the fame just dance wasnt a mega hit yet as a matter of fact it wasnt cracking the top 40 if i can remember correctly and it made the charts debut. her opening week sales weren't great. as it didnt hit no.1 til the beginning of 2009. that's when gaga started to explode with her singles and album sales. that's when poker face was an even massive success.
britney spears when she released her debut baby one more time was becoming a no.1. it was already becoming a massive success. that's when britney was gonna be a force to be reckon with. britney's numbers weren't great with her opening week sales but it did debut at no.1 the album. |

Of course Britney was bigger. This is such a stupid question.
People who don't remember the late 90's should really comment on this. You can tell, since they're using sales figures and statistics to determine who was bigger, whilst most of us who do remember back then are using our memory. Let's put it this way, in 10 years time, you'll have some kids saying "Well, On the Floor and Give Me Everything sold more than Born This Way and The Edge of Glory in 2011, so Pitbull was bigger than Lady Gaga". That's kind of how this thread seems to be. |

gaga's 2nd album the fame monster sold decently it was 174,000 while the double disc deluxe edition including the original The Fame charted at number six with sales of 151,000. so it sold like 325,000 in the 1st week. while britney sold like 1.3 million in the first week with opps. but gaga didnt sell a million til her 3rd album born this way. britney's 3rd album britney sold 746,000 copies. it failed to garn a big massive hit.

On the other hand the way I see it Gaga has already had her peak. I don't think she has anywhere near the cultural impact she had in 2009/early 2010. |

What you said makes no sense so because Britney had not sold 1 million for her third album nor did it garner a huge hit BTW did better but britney still sold four million BTW 1.9 at the end of her third album britney had sold 27 million albums in the US whilst gaga is on 15 and i'm a salve for you i'm not a girl are still played on the radio and are iconic pop songs regardless of how you dress it up to reiterate what others have said britney sold and was cultarally viable all the way to 2006 without dressing up or outrageous pr stunts her videos her songs and her tours were all huge and iconic gaga is not in the same league
