12.1m for Downton is a stunning result though.”

Well indeed. Funny how people are happy to aggregate now it suits their agenda!

The timeshift is over a 7 day period is it not?
Its likely then that many people watched EE live or during Boxing Day as the follow up ep was Boxing Day morning. Whereas DA has no follow up ep meaning no real urgency to watch.

Still inbetween the many pages of comments already here and to come it was a great evening for BOTH channels. Its just a shame we only have this level of quality once a year...

And now as this thread will no doubt be a 20 page argument over what counts i bid you farewell until tomorrow afternoon.

I'd have to be paid an awful lot of money to watch it once, let alone twice.

3. Downton Abbey 8.1m

Looks like the Beeb and Steven Moffat did the double over Downton then!

(Subject to confirmation of the consolidated ratings - suspect 2 and 3 will swap round when they come through, but probably all >10m)”

And people couldn't watch Downton for a second time on ITV1+1 because it was a two-hour programme.”

I always said ITV1 needed a +2 service, get rid of ITV4 +1 and use the bandwidth - job done....

Are there any +2 channels out there?

Disagree. How can it be a great day for both channels when BBC One normally cleans up easily and there was less than 1% in it this time?

It's not like ITV have NEVER made an effort on Xmas Day before last year.

Just to throw some more wood on the fire

Consider that we know an episode of DW only had 4 millionish live viewers, and timeshifted the same day...2 million - giving an overnight of +6 million. Then a timeshift of +2 million gave it a final of +8 million.

Consider...() the idea that if people know Downton is on +1 they won't do this. So its ratings are skewed immediately with out it. Consider as well that those who would otherwise timeshift decide to watch BBC One +2(+5 minutes ) - then their ratings are skewed.

So in the end we have to really include any overnight repeat in the final figures.
Its too difficult to deal with the 7 day totals (hell Eastenders has probably about a million on iplayer!) and tbh that should be left to the in-house groups to use when commissioning - (far too many arguments to be had on here!!) - but overnight repeats CAN and are included by most.

Just things to consider

I thought you were always against looking at "aggregated" ratings (as you call them) ?

I mean, if we were to aggregate ratings as you've done above, then The X Factor Final had 13.69m (inc +1). That would mean it had more viewers, on average, than the 13.59m who watched The Royal Wedding broadcast on BBC1 - you did say a couple of weeks ago that you don't think the BBC News audience should be included. Do you therefore think TXF was the most watched programme by BARB average last year ?

Personally I think they'd rate better than +1 (which is rather arbitrary)

EE does extremely well on BBC Three, mostly because it fits in with people coming in late, are busy when its usually on etc.

'+1' seems to be more aimed at 'oh I forgot that was on!' (I do this every ****ing week for Misfits!)

No, we all basically agreed on that within about a page I think.

The DOI lineup has been totally overshadowed though. C'mon, Chesney Hawkes is in it people! And much Google fun can be had with the rest.

Royal Wedding still outrates it...only technical details stop this.
If ITV can have whatever they called the X Factor auditions repeat for the signal problem actually CHART, we can say The Royal Wedding comfortably beat all other shows in terms of people watching THE WEDDING.

Put your charts down kids! Lets state the obvious
Now if you'll excuse me am off to find EE's history on BBC Iplayer for viewing figures

I regularly watch programmes on a +1 channel if that start time suits me better. I find them very useful and it does change the way I watch things.

It will be interesting to see how Great Expectations timeshifts. Obviously it won't be of Downton proportions but will it raise the big, star-laden and expensive drama's ratings to a respectable level?

Yeah tbh we really should just accept Downton did extraordinary...EE did well...'well' (bout the same as usual, who really cares - Boxing Day was the main one and that was pretty dire!

And we can move onto DOI predictions!! (am saying 6 million and I don't care what anyone quoting me has to say otherwise )
Surely it has to flop this year - am sorry it just is poor. They did get rid of that disgusting horrid guy though, so it might be watchable without wanting to hit myself and anyone else watching - all eyes on Bleakly.

Although tbh its move into getting non-celebs on could boost things a bit

I know, I was only joking . Of course The Royal Wedding was the most watched TV show last year and should be recognised as such.

It's just a bit funny how Robbie went all year saying that ratings shouldn't be aggregated, mentioning almost every day how +1 inflates things (or to that effect), but then he goes on to aggregate the Christmas Day EE episode rating. If he's so against "aggregating" ratings (as he's called it for the best of the year), he shouldn't do it at all. For the record, I'm with you - if people want to add in +1 for DA, then they can add in BBC3 for EE if they wish, (although IMO it should be recognised that the EE second airing aired on a channel with double the reach of the channel the DA second airing so it wasn't a totally level playing field). But the point I was trying to make was at least be consistent about what you believe in and not say one thing for 364 days of the year but then change your mind just for one other day.

Although the BBC will be delighted that they rushed out their 'Xmas victory' press release on Boxing Day.

I suspect they'll be oddly quiet about it today.
