Nielsen in the states do have a 'convergence' panel (both TV and PC) but this isnt US comprehensive, plus the PC and TV measurement techniques are different making putting them together difficult, but interesting nonetheless.

The start of Public Enemies will most likely suffer against the hugely popular Mamma Mia. To be honest Public Enemies doesn't look like a ratings winner to me at all.

I don't mind Masterchef in primetime, but I don't think it should take up 3 x 9pm slots.

Due to timeshift viewers, Downton Abbey has become the most watched Christmas day programme. EE still wins the Christmas Night viewership prize.

Would I be right in thinking that Panorama was down for 9pm, then moved to 8pm, and then moved back again to 9pm? (Could've sworn that the BBC News site said 20:00 at one point).

Hopefully this trial is seen as a success by broadcasters and becomes permanent. Hopefully any money lost by having less ads within a show can be clawed back firstly through their being more demand for the fewer ad slots available within a show, and secondly by aiiring those ads earlier or later in the schedules. It will be too fewer viewers, but ITV often concentrates virtually all it's primetime ads between 7-10pm most days anyway, going practically ad free in the 6pm and 10pm hours.


Best Countdown rating for a long time I suspect. Indeed best 8 out of 10 Cats ratings for a while too.


The Bank Job wasn't bad - there is a good show in there trying to get out. Like so many game shows nowadays pacing is a problem - it's basically an hour long slot for three 90 second rounds.


Considering I've barely watched BBC1 over Christmas I wouldn't have noticed anyway, but Public Enemies seems to have had a relatively low key build up, so maybe postponing the series completely would be better.

I'm not sure they would want to knock Masterchef back a week but that takes three consecutive nights from January 17th, so it could go there. Or be rescheduled weekly as I doubt it really needs to be on three nights running.

How is it misleading when he clearly stated "within 7 days of transmission" i.e. not Christmas Day.

I wish we could move on now. I know it's a touchy subject for some that the BBC didn't clean up quite as expected, but the big story of yesterday has now become a big bore!

I'm not sure how, but we've gone through 635 posts since the officials were released yesterday.

Even with the schedule change, I don't expect The Biggest Loser to do great, probably 3m to 3.5m given how last year did in the higher profile Monday slot.

Mamma Mia premiered with 5.66m in April on April 9th 2011 up against a very poor So You Think You Can Dance.

If it is within 1m of the Public Enemies rating, I will be very surprised. My estimates are 4.1m for Mamma Mia and 5.4m for Public Enemies. (Trust me - seeing Mamma Mia at all, is once too often.)

Being serious now for this post, BBC are right to show this tonight at 9pm.

If it gets delayed much longer, it might as well go in the bin. It was originally down for October, but got moved when DIP was brought forward.

It's not the most cheerful drama either....

Just watched the Panorama report, it was excellent, but completely heart breaking and given the effect this case has had on the legal system, I think it was absolutely the right decision for Public Service broadcaster to show this tonight. It is far more important than trivial ratings.

It doesn't matter when it is shown really, BBC1 dramas have a core audience of 4m-6m and then tend to be gritty - dealing with murder or nasty criminals, (It also had a decent piece in The Guardian today from one of its legal advisers.) Now it will be going out against, Mamma Mia, Eternal Law and Law & Order UK, hardly gold-plated opposition. Of course both Friday shows do have Celebrity Big Brother for opposition - Public enemies will skew old, so Eternal Law (fantasy drama) would be the one to get squeezed a little.

A powerful, moving and thought provoking edition of Panorama tonight. Right to be shown and I couldn't care less about ratings right now.

I didn't watch, I have followed the case since 1993, as long as justice has been served that is all I need to know. I don't see Biggest Loser rating too well, C4 were showing the 74 Stone Babysitter - so the tacky tv audience will have been split somewhat.

ITV1's Stephen Lawrence documentary replaces their film at 10.35pm.

This year's Christmas Day 9pm head to head was built as the most exciting for years but now I couldn't give a stuff about what won. Talk about sucking the life out of an intriguing battle.

Have the BBCi figures for Sherlock been released yet. Or are they only issued weekly.

I gave up on the Lawrence doc after 20 minutes when it became clear it was little to do with the trial that has just concluded today and predominantly an attack on the Met. I suspect it will have had less than 3m viewers for sure.

Typical BBC, losing sight of the wood for the PC-driven Guardianista trees. I suspect the ITV documentary on now is focusing more on the trial and reporting on what a jury has just decided.

As for Public Enemies, it's now sunk. It was never going to be a big rater given how grim it looked, but at least it stood a chance with a Holby lead in and The Biggest Loser as opposition. It will probably launch to 3-3.5m tomorrow now, and kill the rest of BBC1's week, giving nice launches to Eternal Law and L&O, hurting BBC1 further in coming weeks.

If they wanted to run a Lawrence doc, then 10.35pm was going begging with a Lee Mack repeat shown just 2 days ago in that slot.
