Re xmas films, I remember when BBC1 secured the worldwide TV premiere rights to ET, it made the news headlines - think it was 1990 when it aired, despite hitting the cinemas in 1982. Apparently Speilberg even made some edits to the film himself in order to satisfy the needs of a 3.10pm Christmas Day slot.
And despite basically everyone in the country having seen the film in the 1980s, it still got 17.5m viewers for its premiere, just narrowly behind OFAH which I think topped the day with 17.9m. |

I believe you are correct. Film premieres on television often didnt happen for a number of years and were very big news for the two main channels back then and were real event television guaranteed to get big audiences.
How times have changed. The third Narnia and Black Swan are on Sky Movies this week and The King's Speech is on Christmas day. Only saw it in February at the cinema. |

I guess Crimewatch wasn't particularly the sort of thing folk want to watch on a Thursday night close to Christmas, and it had an appalling lead in too. I do wonder if Crimewatch really has much value in this news media/internet age - it was groundbreaking, relevant and important 30 years ago, and I do question its value now. Certainly in a prime time slot on BBC1, which I wonder if it really merits?

Maybe if they featured more white collar crime, it might be more relevant for a BBC1 audience? Do you recognise this home counties company director?

Just like Downton this year with anticipation at fever pitch

Still, it will make it even more hilarious if (and it's a mighty big "if") the papers have to digest a 6.5m overnight rating and it ranking below Ab Fab and a children's animation in the chart of the day... ![]() (I reckon it will get 8-9m on the day actually, but it's unchartered territory for sure....) |

Porto v Manchester City, Ajax v Manchester United and Valencia v Stoke City in the Europa League.
AC Milan v Arsenal and Napoli v Chelsea in the Champions League. Quite attractive ties all round really. |

[quote=kwynne42;55326898]The Daily Mirror has the 1976 Christmas day schedule, and people complain about nowadays
3PM Queens Speech 3.15PM Billy smarts circus (would probably be banned today) 4.15PM Film. Oliver (Not exactly new even then) 6.35PM News 6.45PM Bruce Forsyth and the Generation Game 7.45 Morcambe and Wis Christmas Show (probably the only good thing all day 8.45PM Film Airport (From 1970 if I remember rightly) 11.00PM Parkinsons Magic Show (Goood Grief) And they say nowadays is unimaginative. I would be happy to off sat down from 4.15 to 11.00 watching that lot, Originally Posted by derek500 View Post It may be wrong, but I read on another thread that Marry Poppins had its UK TV premiere on BBC1 Christmas Day 1984, 20 years after its release!! It is also why films like Gone With The Wind made so much money in its day. The studio would release the film every few years in cinemas. Then they would have double bills of films and still get big audiences. Television had to wait years and sometimes decades before they got their hands on a blockbuster movie.

Very nice. More like CL fixtures!
But increased risk that Man U and Man C go out if they don't take it seriously - especially Man U with less squad depth due to numerous injuries. And C5 will want Man U - Man C will not draw anything like the same ratings. CL - Madrid play same night as Chelsea so ITV will have: - Arsenal 1st leg - Munich or Inter 1st leg - Barcelona 2nd leg - Chelsea 2nd leg http://www.uefa.com/MultimediaFiles/...0_DOWNLOAD.pdf |

all they need now is their bus to Blackpool to get snowbound some where ooop norf.
(I caught a bit of Breakfast before leaving the house this morning - it seemed like "snowmageddon" was on the way for the South, with viewers texting in across the Home Counties saying "it's snowing here!!" - in December, in the UK, no shit.... |

Disappointing. What could the "issues of commercial importance" be that have meant they've had to pull out of Freeview HD not just once but twice? I don't understand it.

Black Swan trending on Twitter. Lot of interest for a 2.15pm premiere on Sky Movies. Interesting to to see figures in a couple of weeks.

I assume there's a minimum quota of native HD that is needed to fulfil the licence obligations and they can't afford to do it.

I wonder if the slot will go to either ITV or Channel 4 or will Ofcom simply keep it back until Channel 5 is ready to launch a HD service.
Only today we've heard that Blue Peter which recently converted to HD is going out first on CBBC which will have to be SD when BBC Two HD launches. |

Millions of people watch C5 HD on Virgin Media and other providers already, seems silly that they would lose out on a chance to broadcast to maybe 10 million more viewers on Freeview. C5 shows heaps of HD movies, the likes of CSI & NCIS - something like The Wright Stuff could easily be filmed in HD, so could The Gabby Logan Show. I don't know about Neighbours & Howe and Away but surprised if that wasn't HD.
Surprisingly though there is loads of US content available in HD which C5 only buys SD versions of. No doubt for financial reasons. |

Poor night for BBC1, although Crimewatch fulfills their PSB requirements, the only problem with last night was that it was too close to Christmas.
ITV1 did well with Without You above 5m, but 3 part dramas don't get recommissioned however considering it tends to be their 'burning off period' with some shows, they will be pleased |
