“Richard Desmond's Channel 5 is set to record the biggest TV advertising haul in the broadcaster's 14-year history, with revenue up 28% to more than £350m this year owing to factors such as the reality show Big Brother.”

Quote:
“Desmond's deal to bring Big Brother to the channel – a £20m multi-year agreement finally struck in March with the programme's producer Endemol – has dramatically increased the advertiser-friendly audience of 16 to 34 year olds.”

So C5+1 hit a new high of 150k with Hancock at 9pm if my calculations are correct. Shame DS didn't report it even though it rated about as well as or even better than the Channel 4 shows which it did report the +1 figures for.

C5 have been savvy with their scheduling these past couple of nights in order to drive people to +1. The Gadget Show should have fared well at its usual time of 8pm tonight, too.

On the surface of it it sounds excellent, but I don't think it's as good a performance as the article is making it sound like. There's been a £70m increase in ad revenue but there's been a reported £40m increase in the programming budget for the likes of Big Brother. So in real terms, we're talking about a ~£30m increase here (in terms of profit). And as the article states, a substantial portion of that is due to last year's figures being abnormally low due to Aegis, who represents some of the biggest brands, not buying advertising slots on C5 for most of 2010 which hurt last year's numbers. All in all, ratings-wise C5's market share is steady y-o-y at 6.0% and 16-34 share has been the same as last year too (according to Broadcast) so the increase in ad revenue has mainly, it seems, been due to other factors such as the ones stated above as well as a stronger advertising market this year overall. A solid year for C5 but they should be looking at making further improvements next year, both ratings- and ad-revenue wise due to the bigger Europa League ties, a longer run of the summer BB series (it'll probably be more like 13 weeks next time) and the early peak-time schedule revamp which will most likely result in a higher average of the 6.25-8pm period IMO.

Maybe if you email DS about it, they'll start reporting the C5+1 ratings? Some of the reporters might not be aware that C5+1 started reporting last week. I think Jake Kanter on Broadcast has started to report the C5+1 figures so at least there'll be some kind of source for those figures in the meantime, when he's writing the articles. Just wondering by the way, are your figures tape-checked or full-slot averages? It would explain why your Urban Justice's rating (inc +1) is less than the one (exc +1) reported by DS!

I'm not too convinced by Desmond so far. He should probably have been investing in sport, US imports and factual. That would build on their existing success and give the channel a stronger identity. Instead, he just seems to be trying to turn it into his own dream channel - something which fits in with other parts of his business.

Could be worth doing as I think The Voice should be kept to once a year. Rather than just starting it against DWTS in September, they could start it in early August (on Mondays and Tuesdays) to build its usual audience (if not a higher one due to the new judges) during the auditions with no competition, meaning that the show would have plenty of momentum going into the live shows when the competition starts. 3 hours of AGT averaging a 3.0 or higher would really boost NBC in the Fall.”

The Sing Off averaged over a 3.0 in its December run last year but the move opposite DWTS has basically killed it. I don't think they'll repeat that risking a far bigger brand for them. Plus, take AGT out of summer and NBC would never even break a 2.0! And Syco get more hours out of it as well because NBC stretch it out over the whole summer. They also avoid running at the same time as X Factor.

Simon Cowell has been doing interviews this week as part of the Howard Stern appointment. He says they're looking for a younger female judge who won't be afraid to stand up to Howard and Sharon. They're looking for a big venue in New York and making some aesthetic changes as well (theme music, graphics). Plus (as he has said before) he's pushing the angle that they haven't found enough stars (basically just Terry Fator and Jackie Evancho).

The celebrity stuff isn't working and IMO it's hurting the channel. Big Brother aside, I think they should scrap all the celebrity rubbish and invest more in the areas that work well as well looking to commision homegrown drama and/or comedy. I still think they should dedicate a slot to comedy.

Which suggests it probably wasnt that big a draw in the first place. Then again, over 0.5m switched off, presumably pretty quickly leaving 5.9m or so to enjoy/endure the rest of the hour.

Or did it build?

I'm not sure. Trying to find a ratings breakdown of the episode. I was expecting it to fall during broadcast but it didn.t.

Looks like it slumped last night though. That's a big drop off for it. Millionaire looks to have won the slot but I was expecting 5m+ for that too so that wasn't a brilliant performance. Looks like the novelty of the live specials has worn off slightly. Probably time to start using regular members of the public again. 4.6m isn't too bad against new drama on BBC1 though.

Actually, last night looks pretty low across the board. I expected a million more from Bleak Old Shop in particular. AQOS did OK without Corrie at 8:30pm though.

Interestingly a dead heat between BBC1 and ITV between 8.30 and 10, stripping out +1.

Young Heriot officially the first major flop/disappointment of the season.

Must have been close, and we've timeshift to come. I reckon both BBC1 shows will nose slightly ahead in the proper ratings.

Either way, Heriot got the switch off its grim first episode deserved. It was better last night, but still filmed half in darkness.

I knew YJH would drop. The first episode was a mess. Too grey & too grim and that put people off. A perfect example of how not to do a first episode.
