Judging by Jonathan Ross' twitter he's not too happy with the British Comedy Awards, quite understandably given how terrible they were.
He's said various things, including that he "will be having words", replying to someone asking if he would do it next year with a blank response, agreeing with people complaining about various aspects of the show and saying that it felt too much like hard work. All in all it was a complete shambles. |

What was on Channel 4 to justify switching it to E4 at 23:10? What an odd decision.

Interesting note from Elgin on Gallifrey Base:
- Michael McIntyre was interviewed on Steve Wright's Radio 2 show earlier. Very interesting comment that he made - he and the production team have been to the BBC and asked for a longer slot on Christmas Day for the Comedy Roadshow as they're having trouble editing it down to a hour. Could yet be a last minute change to the schedule if they get their wish. At the moment it is 22:30 to 23:30 with BBC News on after. They could extend it so it is on until 23:45 with BBC News on afterwards, or do a swap with BBC News at 22:30 and McIntyre on from 22:45 to 00:15 or something. And also: - EastEnders on Friday 13th January is 40 minutes, meaning a 10 minute clash with Coronation Street. |

There's an interview with Macintyre on the Mail website (presumably also in the Xmas TV Guide this weekend in the paper): Quote:
"You might think his own Christmas Day show is small-fry in comparison, even if it does feature special guest Kylie Minogue dressed as a fairy. But he isn’t underplaying the significance of the slot. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/ar...#ixzz1gmzSVYlm‘It’s huge, isn’t it? It’s actually a departure, having stand-up on Christmas Day. You used to have big Christmas specials like Morecambe & Wise, but the recent tradition’s been about watching EastEnders. Someone usually dies in EastEnders. We’re going for less of that, and more laughs, hopefully. But yes, it’s terrifying. I’m worried I don’t have enough jokes. I did the Royal Variety Performance last Christmas. If I’d known they were going to give me my own show, I’d have kept some of the Christmas jokes back!’ The show will include a smattering of music and some ‘surprises’. He’ll be joined by, among others, James Corden, Jack Dee, Rob Brydon and Miranda Hart – a cornucopia of comedy talent. How did he decide on the line-up? ‘I basically wrote letters to people I found funny, and asked them if they’d like to be on my show. Some even said yes.’ Some didn’t, though. He falls about laughing as he tells of his ‘audacious’ bid to pull in some of his big comedy heroes. ‘I wrote to John Cleese. He wrote back and said that, for tax reasons, he could only be in the country for a certain number of days each year – and he couldn’t give me one of them, but maybe we could catch up for a drink some time next year. I wrote back suggesting we should meet at Duty Free in the airport, if that was easier.’ Being Michael, he started fretting around August about whether anyone would watch. ‘My own Christmas Day will be ruined, of course. I’ll have all day to build myself into a frenzy about whether anyone will tune in. Then Boxing Day will be spent worrying about the viewing figures.’ It does sound like it will be "all stand up", plus musical guests, rather than sketches or some sort of cheap tatty revue. Perhaps Corden will do his Smithy routine? |

Awful for the British Comedy Awards.
It needs a complete rethink - on the whole it was completely lacking in fun. Nobody looked very much like they wanted to be there and very few seemed to consider it an appropriate occasion to crack a joke... Badly scheduled too, when you think about it. Wasn't it on a Sunday last year?BBC One's 9pm comedy hour didn't seem to be affected as I thought it might. In fact, LATA was stronger than usual - I guess you'd have to put that down to a better line-up with Sarah Millican (love her or hate her) on hosting duties. |

I sensed the Big Quiz would be in the 5m+ region, so well done to that - as I said last night, it was perfectly scheduled. Very good for HIGNFY to beat it despite the soap lead in and the Comedy Awards competition - thought it would be sub 5m last night. Apollo did OK by its standards.
Not good for the Awards, although the 10pm figure was ok-ish. Don't understand all the slagging off of the show, including from the host himself, thought it was quite entertaining myself even if some of the awards themselves made little sense. The Coogan-Iannucci bit was one of the comedy highlights of the year. That BBC2 Masterchef rating looks a bit insipid - wasn't it getting 3m? [EDIT: I see rzt has updated his post, presumably it was a spin off show then?] |

Last Friday's similar show got 2 million, not surprised its lower this week as most last week might have tuned in not knowing it wasn't the normal Masterchef, whilst this week they think its finished. |

Ouch, the comedy awards has gone from a major highlight of ITV's December schedules to a throw away programme hardly anyone watches on Channel 4, how long do Channel 4 hold the contract for? Channel 4 obviously don't care for it as they wouldn't have scheduled it on a Friday night. In the thread some people suggested it go back to ITV which is a phrase not often uttered round here.
It never rated well on ITV1, lest we forget. At least Ch4 does make a substantial contribution to British comedy. The biggest laugh about the Comedy Awards was always the fact it was on ITV in the first place! Quote:

Cheapo filler and decent ratings are not mutually exclusive however, particularly if it appeals to your core demographic! |

Was it three years C4 had the Comedy Awards for. ITV I think would happily have it back now it's scandal is forgotten - it would serve them quite well tonight opposite Strictly IMO, although I think must have aired earlier on ITV as I recall it having an X Factor lead in. Quote:
Spent some time round at the folks' this evening. As ever, that meant a diet of constant ITV. As crap as the Big Soap Quiz was, I did find it strangely watchable. I think it could have rated much better than people think, with a Coro lead in. Just the sort of thing ITV's core demographic soap audience will have lapped up.
My mum and dad did anyway... ![]() Is 5-6m realistic? ![]() Quote:

Poor for the Comedy Awards on Channel 4, in the wrong slot against comedy on BBC1. Three nights in a row ITV1 has won the 9pm slot which is unusual in the run-up to Christmas, although obviously that run will come to an end tonight. Obviously the main focus is how close can Strictly get to The X Factor Final's overnight figure from last weekend, it should be in the ~12m range at least I would have thought, probably higher. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix should do well against the first Strictly and Merlin on ITV1 with ~4.5m/5m however the second Strictly well doesn't have much in terms of competition, I don't see Westlife's show putting up much of a fight. Last year we had: Quote:
BBC One (inc. HD) Obviously no one expects Strictly's figures to be as high last year, but at the same point I don't expect it to be too much lower.
17:30- Celebrity Total Wipeout: 5.51m (24.1%) 18:30- The Impressions Show: 5.65m (22.9%) 19:00- Strictly Come Dancing: 12.97m (45.8%) * peak: 14.47m (50.7%) at 19:55 20:00- The National Lottery Saturday Draws: 8.24m (31.1%) 20:15- Casualty: 6.76m (25.2%) 21:05- Strictly Come Dancing: 13.08m (47.6%) * peak: 14.10m (51.7%) at 21:55 * most watched SCD episode ever * up 2.7m (+26%) vs. last year's final 22:05- BBC News: 9.43m (38.4%) 22:25- Match of the Day: 3.56m (19.2%) ITV1 (inc HD) 18:00- Family Film of the Decade: 3.04m (12.7%) 19:00- The Cube: Celebrity Special: 3.77m (13.3%) 20:00- Take Me Out: 4.66m (17.3%) 21:15- Bridget Jones' Diary: 2.07m (8.8%) |

Very good rating for The Big Quiz. I was expecting much less tbh, but it was decent filler a week before Christmas. So far, apart from Tuesdays ITV have held up much better than I thought in the period inbetween IAC and Christmas with Coming Out, Without You, The Big Quiz all performing well and the football & Royal Variety pulling in predictably strong ratings.

Not often this is mentioned, but Neighbours seems to be a steady performer for Channel 5 with 1.8 million viewers. It seems to be settled comfortably around this level and as Channel 5 doesn't have the ratings pressure of BBC One should have a long life on Channel 5.
Also people wanting a soap that is fairly innocent and light hearted and doesn't dwell on death and misery have an ideal show. |

CH4 have turned the British Comedy Awards into a serious awards show, like a BAFTA thing.
The whole point of it on ITV was that it's a micky take of awards since comedy is such a matter of personal taste the idea of handing out awards for it is bizarre. |

I think Harry Potter is in a horrible schedule. Really awful. Should be starting just before the end of Strictly to gain the audience after it. No one is going to watch a film half way through. Instead ITV are throwing it away to use it to claim the entire night. Which is just daft imo. A range of shows for the first Strictly, then the film for Merlin and the Strictly results would be a strong showing.
I think Strictly will be higher for the results show than last year tbh. But I think the main show might be a bit lower. Merlin 7-8 million. I think 8 is likely. (clever having the Lotto draw after and not before the sandwiched drama this year btw) |

I am a bit worried for Blue Peter, I was reading yesterday that its ratings have fallen from 1.4 million ten years ago to 0.4 million now( I know it attracted 5 million viewers in the pre digital era, but a comparison from 2001 is more meaningful). Can't work out why the fall is so steep and why the BBC seem to have their knives out for it as the presenters are as good as any from the past and the show has a new studio.

Blue Peter - Average viewing figures 2011 - 370,000 (year to date) 2010 - 440,000 2009 - 430,000 2008 - 580,000 (timeslot changes in August) 2007 - 920,000 2006 - 940,000 2005 - 1,080,000 2004 - 1,310,000 2003 - 1,520,000 2002 - 1,460,000 Quote:
In 2002, the show regularly attracted more than 1.4m viewers. By 2008, when the BBC changed the programme's time slot from 17:00 to 16:30 GMT, figures fell from 940,000 to 580,000.
Why did it's timeslot change in 2008? Was that due to The Weakest Link?Quote:
Don't see what's so unusual about ITV winning the 9pm on 3 consecutive ordinary working week nights.

Not unusual as such, but unusual due to the fact that mid December tends to be an ITV weak spot in the schedules.
, until Endeavour on the 2nd.And even that might not win, although I think it probably should. |
