BBC1 averaged 8.1m in peak time according to Sam Hodges.

The Christmas of disappointing ratings continues, although EE getting 10m overnight would have been decent enough against Poirot, not the biggest and bestest show that has ever been shown in the history of television.

I probably just about expected EE to beat DA, but not by that big a margin - 1.8m is quite substantial, and probably enough for the overnights-obsessed, sensationalist, instant news media to run with:

DOWNTON TROUNCED!

- even though it might still deliver a record timeshift and actually win the day.

However, having done pretty well in securing most of its regular loyal jam-making audience, I'm not sure it will squeeze past EE and DW in the scheme of things, as both those shows will probably pile on an extra 1m and up to 2m respectively.

So, a brave effort Fincham. But you lost. And having hyped it up to buggery, the media will now report on the fact your juggernaut of a show lost, and lost badly (on the overnights). You could have been celebrating a 10-11m overnight had you scheduled it last Sunday. But you didn't. Suck it up, you reap what you sow.

If BBC1 can deliver a blockbusting line up of EE, Royle Family and Gavin & Stacey next year, I suspect Downton may now beat a retreat.

Corrie had 9.3m, beating Strictly by a big margin it seems.

The news this morning really shouldn't be about EE convincingly beating Downton, but how Doctor Who managed not to win the day or get a 10m overnight.

I think ASFF probably held on to the ITV core soap audience, treating it as an extended ad break between EmFm and Corrie, whilst BBC1 animation fest delivered a poor DW lead in - that's the only explanation I can think of.

It does now look like DW is in a gradual ratings decline.

That must be CS's best performance in years, and seems to have come out of the blue. It looks like the disappointing DW figure damaged SCD as well.

Except that the final consolidated figures have shown massive timeshifts, putting S6 on par with previous series. Indeed, the DW audience has shown the way in utilising iPlayer and other timeshift devices.

The consolidated ratings will be especially interesting to look at this time round, as Doctor Who might timeshift past both EE and DA to become officially most watched Christmas Day show. Disappointing rating for it though.

Doctor Who has NEVER topped the Christmas Day overnights before, and will likely be close to 11 million in the officials. So not really.

From Broadcast:
Quote:
“The Christmas Day ratings battle between EastEnders and Downton Abbey was won by the BBC’s long-running soap.

Over the 9pm hour, when the two went head to head, BBC1’s EastEnders drew 9.92m (33.39%) while Downton Abbey pulled 8.43m (28.37%) across ITV1 and ITV1 HD.

EastEnders, which is building to an explosive climax and the exit of Albert Square stalwart Pam St Clement, peaked with 10.42m (34.78%) in the final five minutes at 9.55pm.

The long-running soap has now claimed the top spot in the hotly contested Christmas Day ratings for three consecutive years.

However, ITV put up a strong defence with popular period drama Downton Abbey.

The special episode, set over Christmas 1919, was seen by 8.13m (29.44%) from 9pm to 11pm across ITV1 and ITV1 HD, peaking with 8.9m (29.98%) in the five minutes from 9.05pm.

A further 433,300 (2.04%) watched on time-shifted ITV1+1, according to overnight Barb figures supplied by Attentional.

It could not match Dowton’s previous best overnights of 10.5m (38.8%) for the final of the second series on 6 November.”

Didn't see that coming. It got 9m AFAIK last Xmas so 9.3m is excellent.

Yes - when broadcast in broad daylight, at teatime, on hot summer days.

Corrie averaged 9.0m (excluding +1).

ITV1 recorded its best Christmas peak time viewing share for seven years with 29.7% last night

29.7% peak time share for ITV1 last night so the channel was consistent across the evening

29.7% to 31.1% for BBC1

By usual Christmas Day standards I thought EE wasn't anything special last night. The Masood storyline doesn't climax until tonight and the Phil Stalker story line clearly has further to go. The rating was decent considering the clash though with Downton Abbey, which also rated well, and with nearly 10 million (plus BBC3 viewers like me) having seen what is coming up tonight, should be a bumper rating. Highest of the year, or is that over estimating?

EDIT - and it seems like well done to ITV1 last night for their strong performance across the evening

Yes?

The figures DO NOT show any slow decline at all.

Unless you are falling into the trap of looking at one single occurrence and saying that proves a slow decline.

Not especially surprised that no show cleared 10m for the first time EVER. It did look a distinct possibility a couple of weeks ago when the schedules came out. Plus we came very close to that scenario last time Xmas Day fell on a Sunday.

Downton did very well, as did EastEnders. I don't really think it's about who 'won' here- both channels will be extremely happy with those ratings.

To be fair to DW, it was the most watched drama on Christmas Day. Eastenders was the most watched Soap on Christmas Day - that is all the newspapers will see. However Downton Abbey may find it gets the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It posted great ratings for a massive clash, but I feel the newspapers may compare the ratings for the final consolidated ratings of 12.73 million (final episode) and the ratings from last night of 8.13 million - headlines of "Downton and Out as top ITV show sheds 4 million viewers "

Why would ITV move Downton off of Christmas day next year as it has given ITV1 their best overall Christmas performance in ages...?
