Thanks for that rzt. Pleased to see Comedy Roadshow did reasonably well and Ab Fab securing good figures in the 10pm slot.

Not especially surprised that no show cleared 10m for the first time EVER. It did look a distinct possibility a couple of weeks ago when the schedules came out. Plus we came very close to that scenario last time Xmas Day fell on a Sunday.

Downton did very well, as did EastEnders. I don't really think it's about who 'won' here- both channels will be extremely happy with those ratings.
IIRC the last time Xmas Day fell on a Sunday was 2005, and EastEnders was the only show I think to clear 10m, with something like 10.6m.

Didn't see that coming. It got 9m AFAIK last Xmas so 9.3m is excellent.
Yes, don't think many people saw Corrie as being the second most watched programme of the night... I suspect ITV will now realise they have less to fear on Christmas Day with Downton at their disposal, and Corrie doing so well. In 2012, I would go all out with the following:

15:00 - The Queen
15:10 - Family Film (such as Happy Feet)
16:30 - You've Been Framed Xmas
17:00 - All Star Family Fortunes (or similar)
18:00 - Emmerdale
19:00 - Coronation Street
20:00 - Downton Abbey
22:00 - Benidorm (or similar new comedy)

Smallest gap between ITV1 and BBC1 in terms of peak time share for over a decade (29.7% to 31.1%)

A very convincing win for Corrie over Strictly. I'm sure some were saying a few weeks ago that Strictly would be sure to win that battle even though there was very little in it last year.

Maybe viewers are sending the BBC a clear signal here and it's time to put something different on in that slot. There's just been 4 months of it after all for those that like it.

Corrie averaged 9.0m (excluding +1).

ITV1 recorded its best Christmas peak time viewing share for seven years with 29.7% last night

Well, er, they did air four hours of their biggest shows!

And still lost...

Hands up who thought Downton would beat Ab Fab by only 700k viewers?

Anyone?

Overall, not a bad night really for BBC1 - lowish for Christmas Night, but AbFab and McIntyre especially, probably did better than some people feared/hoped.

The mystery is why ITV viewers suddenly decided to watch TV this year? Am I right in thinking EmFm and Corrie both had big storylines climaxing last night? That probably had more impact than "the Downton effect".

Just realised the bookies were right again (early on at least). Glad I didn't put any money on Dr. Who.

put it like that its clear that the BBC will be HUGELY disappointed. After all they claim to own Christmas Day, but to find themselves only squeaking a primetime win of 1.4% is amazing. Looks likes the bailiffs are repossessing the title deeds

Wow, very close, ITV's strategy worked then, the presence of Downton Abbey in the schedule seemingly pulled up the entire evening, even ASFF did about 2m better than last year.

Though the BBC's schedule was decent, they need to do something different and break away from the Doctor Who/SCD/EastEnders block.

Yes, a major humiliation to have the top show and win the night against ITV's strongest line up in 12 years with 4 hours of their biggest shows, major hype, all the press backing their "show of the year", and their major festive highlight fail to enter production weeks before the schedules were announced....

George - you lost!

Oh, and BBC1 decided to air their smallest shows.
BBC1 were worried enough to put EastEnders up against Downton at the last minute.

For the biggest commercial channel to put out their biggest shows on Christmas day, and only lose out to BBC1 by a couple of percent is some achievement.

While also ensuring that BBC1 didn't have it all their own way with more people watching ITV1 at key points in the evening. Dr Who rating behind Corrie must really stick in your throat?

I don't know why anyone expected DA to come out on top. Although popular it's not exactly the typical family/teenage demographic. Eastenders with it's paint by numbers scripts can be viewed by anyone.

Surprised by Coronation Street, that really did well. Their dramatic Christmas plot really pushed the ratings up.I guess from now on we will be seeing dramatic stories in Corrie at Christmas.

Did they? Where was The X Factor then? Or BGT? They aired 4 hours of some of their big shows, as did BBC1. As it happens, BBC1 (the channel without adverts) ended up slightly ahead, but considering how Christmas Day is supposed to be the day where BBC1 triumphs convincingly over all, last night will have been uncomfortably close for them, with Doctor Who and especially Strictly coming as disappointments. I'm really surprised at that SCD rating, I was expecting at least a million more. ASFF did very well considering it was just filler (only a million behind SCD).

Me : http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showp...&postcount=871

I ended up predicting AbFab pretty much spot-on, but was half a million off with Downton.

The gamble of the 6pm start for Emmerdale and putting ASFF in between it and Corrie was a big success. I think we will see that repeated in 2012 given that it brings the audience to ITV1 at 6pm rather than waiting to 7pm to start the evening.

Why would ITV move Downton off of Christmas day next year as it has given ITV1 their best overall Christmas performance in ages...?
Traditionally ITV has always put its best shows on in the week leading up to Christmas to maximise advertising revenue. They were happy for BBC1 to own Christmas Day as they didn't want to waste programmes at a time when ad revenue was low.

I'm old enough to remember when the only ads on Christmas Day were for summer holidays and furniture stores. However with online shopping things have changed and the traditional dip in advertising on Christmas Day has disappeared.

Downton Abbey is repeated next Sunday (New Year's Day) and many without Sky+ (or other PVRs) will have chosen EastEnders on this basis.

Not to mention the valuable publicity given to DA on BBC Breakfast.

What is an ITV viewer?

I watched both EastEnders and Downton Abbey last night?

What is Downton's lowest ever overnight rating?

Do I recall it starting to something like 7.7m, but then consistently rating above 8.5m throughout s1 and over 9m for s2?
