Ab Fab did considerably better than I thought it would.

And to me the stand-out rating is Michael McIntyre. To those who complained about BBC1 effectively "closing down" at 10.30pm last Christmas Day - looks like you've been vindicated. It would be interesting to see a breakfown for Michael to see if hte rayings increased at 11 o'clock when Downton finished.

No surprise as the producers made no effort whatsoever this year. Well done, them. Quite right. Better to save their big storylines for when the TV world is quieter cos they had a wedding last Christmas Day and they still got trounched by Dr Who

(Mind you if you average out the four 15-minute segments for Emmerdale, it doesn't seem to tally with the 6.2 figure quoted. So does the breakdown include +1? But if so, how does that tally with the times quoted? Confusing!!)

Gordon Ramsey didn't do too badly at 10am then compared to his recent primetime efforts. Considering the rating though for the premiere of Ice Age 3 I think C4 should have aired A Mammoth Christmas in a better slot - perhaps on Christmas Eve, where I'm sure The Snowman would have done better too.

ITV can't really grumble either - and though it's to be expected I guess that looks like healthier figures throughout the day than a standard Sunday - and I guess the same for BBC1.

They have that every year, so no change there. This years story has got to be how close BBC1 & ITV were during peak. Also, ITV winning 6pm, 8pm & 10pm on Christmas day is quite a feat.

Gone slightly under the radar, but thats a brilliant figure for Michael McIntyre. For a show that finished at 11.35, I think they can be really pleased with 6.4m. Was rather a nice show too - fast paced, plenty of faces, a bit of variety, and very nicely suited to a late slot at the end of the evening. I can see that becoming a real Christmas staple.

Anyway, the rest of my post might be a bit samey, but if you want my take…

In terms of the main 9pm shows, EastEnders really performed very well indeed. Considering it was some distance behind in terms of the lead-in, the bosses there can very be very pleased in how it managed to top the (overnight) day. 9.9m is very impressive in the circumstances. Not that Downton under-performed - in fact it's up there with some pretty high expectations, and has surely secured a Christmas Night return? Of course, whether it'll still be quite the national obsession in another 12 months is difficult to tell, but it's nice to see ITV1 at the Christmas Day races.

I suppose the big story of the night really is ITV's better performance in the 6-9pm slots, and BBC One's relative struggles (in terms of year-to-year comparisons). The problem for the latter appears to have been a bit of an underperformance from the usual family films, which put them on the back foot from 6pm when Emmerdale hit the air and fastened in some viewers for the evening (having Downton as a big attraction way down the road must have helped too). The Gruffallo subsequently had a difficult task, and Who and Strictly wound up maybe 1-1.5m down on what we've seen before. I'm personally not particularly surprised about ASFF's performance - there is, if you look, a pretty long history of shiny floor entertainment doing well against Who. A few years ago, it was All-Star Mr and Mrs through the spring, and indeed didn't ASFF itself record an overnight win this year that got Vernon Kay tweeting?

Perhaps it'll inspire a bit of a shake-up with the BBC pre-watershed schedule? It would only really extend to Strictly, though, I imagine. I'm sure Who will be back in the schedule again (and so it should - even that 'disappointing' rating is still magnificent in the scheme of things) but they will probably ensure it takes the Emmerdale clash again.

No doubt ITV will be pleased with the percentages there, DA has made a big difference when they would probably have fallen away from 9.00 onwards. The timeshift will obviously be very interesting for that and Dr Who.

Decent ratings for TOTP which, despite being virtually erased from existance is still maintaining the Christmas Day tradition and being able to announce a non-XF number one added a bit of extra interest.

Dr Who may timeshift well,was beautiful to look at and seemed to borrow from everything from Potter Narnia and LOTR-but there is a niggling lack of buzz post Tennant which makes it less of an event.

SCD needs a standout one-off celeb for this show, last night was unbelievably festive and glitzy to the extent that the dance was almost an afterthought. The cast wasnt quite good enough.

Overall for the BBC they may not be too concerned that they did not dominate as much as they would have liked. It was a year hit by the loss of Royle Family, by less than mega films and a recently lacklustre EE not hitting a story peak. Good ratings for AbFab(not bad return but my interest was prompted more by how the cast have aged-apart from June Whitfield- than anything else), and Mcintyre which was about as good as that kind of stand-up/variety show could get.

My vote for beautiful tv though would go to The Nativity, which I saw for the first time in HD over the last two days. There was some negativity when it was first shown last year I think(though good ratings iirc), but I dont see how anyone could complain, gorgeous to watch and quite moving. Certainly the Church was well served by the BBC yesterday morning.

I think a lot of next year's scheduling will depend on how many sitcoms the BBC have available. If they have a couple of sitcom big hitters available, then, under those circumstances, SCD could be pushed out. I'm sure Doctor Who would perform respectably against Coronation St.

However, if the BBC only have one returning hit sitcom for Christmas Night, I'd expect SCD to remain in the schedule, to join the EastEnders and DW duo.

As for Abbey getting the same slot, I suspect it depends on how much ad revenue is lost by playing it on Christmas Day.

I don't think the BBC need to shake up the pre-watershed schedule next year. If they stick with DW and SCD, but have a better set of afternoon movies next year, that'll provide a bigger lead-in for DW and help increase its figures. A bigger lead-in from DW will help out SCD, as well as having a better cast and a bit more promotion. Then with The Royle Family possibly back at 10pm pulling in 2m+ more viewers than the equivalent slot last night, BBC1 can have a much better Christmas Day next year without wholesale changes. I think last night was ITV1's best chance in ages of beating BBC1 in Christmas Day primetime and I can see the gap between the two widening next year as BBC1 will most likely have a stronger lineup and as you say, DA might not be as big a phenomenon it is in 12 months' time.
