Although Michael Mcintyre really held on to a very nice audience until 11:35pm so that made up for the disappointing start to the evening. Family Fortunes and Corrie also both higher than I expected. Pretty decent for Corrie to peak only 0.3m lower than Eastenders on Christmas Day.

Couple other things I noticed: Downton actually rated higher during its first hour against Eastenders than its 2nd hour, which was a bit odd. This could suggest an 8pm-10pm timeslot would be better next year for it. A massive 29.6m total people watching TV at 9pm-10pm compared to just 25.6m in the same slot last year; that would include timeshifters before 2am.”

I thought so but the BBC are Not promoting the fact it's on at 9:00pm. They are however promoting the 70 min special for Next Sunday (Pat's death)

Im glad i stuck with EastEnders yesterday and had faith in it
Beating downton. I am however shocked that It is #1 and Doctor who isn't despite DW not clashing with anything that big

NYD should well for BBC One with EE, Sherlock and Ab Fab, I think Ab Fab should be able to hold onto the 7m it got yesterday as Sherlock is bound to get 8-9m.

EE should provide a good lead in for The Royal Bodyguard and Mrs Brown's Boys, both have been heavily trailed.

I fully expect the ratings to grow during the 7:00pm-8:10pm slot. It's the end to a legend.A character that's been around since 1986 and is one of the most well known faces in soap. I fully expect Casual and Ex viewers to tune in.

Sherlock got 2 trailers last night after Dr who so that will also do very well

So i think all round both the Beeb and ITV will be happy and disappointed.

The beeb still win the day and for those who dont delve into stats will purely see the headline "BBC1 Wins rating battle"
But they'll be disappointed with Whos figure being down, I'd imagine they weren't expecting a stellar figure for EE against DA must be a niggle not to pass that 10m mark though but considering EE ratings have been underwelming recently there was probably worries over it being beaten.

Ab Fab and Mcintyre did about 1 million more than i expected.

ITV1 will be pleased that ED and Corrie both performed strongly and DA did amazing outside of its usual zone and against EE. I'm sure it will timeshift well and was probably an afternoon Boxing Day watch for many. I dont know whether ITV expected a DA win but they certainly put up an impressive fight and hopefully it pushes BBC to put a bit of variety into a night they've ruled.

to be honest isnt the EE Christmas rating, the same as everything else about EE at the moment, underwhelming, but never bad enough that requires the Thunderbirds to launch and take action.

Doctor Who was fun, but lacked depth, not one ill re-watch many times, and easily the worst of the Christmas specails.

Yes, I've uploaded it to my YouTube account:

It's a pretty neat promo, but it could have done without Amy Childs being in it.

Channel 5 have always done good promos, the one they did two years ago with the US imports, Minder and Ice Road Truckers was really good.

Cracking schedule BBC1 have tonight.

Jim'll Fix It, premiere of Madagascar 2, The Borrowers, Eastenders, Royal Bodyguard, Mrs Brown's Boys then MOTD later on. Certainly looks better than Countryfile and Nigel Slater we had last Boxing Day.

I thought Jim'll Fix It was quite good. Could see it working in an early evening Saturday or even Sunday slot for a longer run - maybe in the summer.

No-one would ever be happy with whoever the host was, but Shane Ritchie did fine - as good as anyone else would have been.

I think someone here must have written the ratings article on the BBC News website

Mentioning ITV1+1 as an excuse as to why their ratings are higher and then factoring in the BBC3 repeat of EastEnders (but of course not the ITV2 repeats of CS & ED)

I'm not sure peaks should really be included in such an article for shows like soaps and dramas, it complicates an already complicated picture for the general reader.

Lizo Mzimba's comment is complete rubbish though, "And a decline in Christmas Day terrestrial viewing appears to be continuing. This is the first year no programme managed an average viewership of 10 million or more."

In his world 9 + 8 equals less viewers than 10 + 4

I'm sure this is what Robbie was waiting for: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz...gs-battle.html

"Downturn Abbey" - a pun Robbie would be proud of.

It's been used on This Week for months.

I noticed that. I assumed Robbie had broken into their offices this morning and drafted up the article himself.

Or maybe they're finally taking notice of all those emails...

Clutching at straws springs to mind. Orders must have come down from the top to rewrite it. Brilliant.

And I'm thinking The Borrowers will only get 3.7m

Corrie at 8pm might dent it, but it looks on course for a very good rating indeed.

Daytime was dire though, a repeat of Gruffalo's child from yesterday then this afternoon a repeat of last night's SCD and then a repeat of Christmas Eve's Winter Wipeout. They might as well have just put the EastEnders omnibus on instead.

Its one repeat airing for each show (on the same night), seems fair to me.

We have had "Downturn Abbey" and "Eastenders trounces Downton" today, im sure Robbie may have had to change his underpants at least once.

A decent night overall from the big two with BBC Two and Channel 4 also providing good alternatives and Channel 5 not collapsing altogether. EastEnders unsurprisingly won and hit Downton (and Downton in turn hit EastEnders) but Doctor Who struggled more than I thought; I think maybe because Family Fortunes is more accessible as opposition than Emmerdale and I'm sure ITV1 will look to keep the same kind of format next year. The biggest surprise of the night for me was Coronation Street beating Strictly Come Dancing to such an extent - obviously the bigger lead in that normal (Emmerdale usually struggles more than that opposite Doctor Who) assisted Coronation Street.

Dear Jim'll Fix It

Can we please have a christmas schedule that is not blighted by soapathon trading slots, or conversely padded with showsthat tells us how good shows were in yesteryear, or shows us the shows from yesteryear, or boxing day repeats of christmas day soaps, or ominbus editions of repeated soaps of soaps from christmas day

regards.....sick of soaps....they're not christmas nor entertaining unless Jeremy Kyle was born in Bethlehem

Dear Jim'll Fix It aka Shane Ritchie

Can you fix it for the BBC to commission a sequel to the Borrowers?

From

Charnham

PS: Can you also fix it for the sequel to have better blending between green screen and live action elements?

Just watched an explosive EE, surely it has to beat 10m easily - more like 10.5m, Royal Bodyguard just started now - surely it will keep most of the viewers? Could we see the 30 minute show holding on to 9m viewers? It has me thinking that Mrs Brown's Boys will get a boost also?
allthingsuk

An excellent EastEnders earlier - I think it'll get 10.3-10.4m; maybe Royal Bodyguard to 8.7/8.8m.
