OK, fair point, maybe not ever but certainly not during the festive period when the BBC are supposedly meant to be at their strongest.

I'll have to watch New Tricks one day and find out why so many people watch it. Looks as though they're going to repeat the whole 2010 series. The next episode is on Thursday 12th January.

I had been expecting a long Channel 5 debate this Christmas, we havent had one for a good a couple of weeks.

Hit of the year: Downton Abbey. The growth of the second series, despite the XF lead-in dropping, was quite exceptional. A drama pulling in over 12m is astonishing. Honourable mentions here go to: Luther, Frozen Planet, Celebrity Juice and Scott and Bailey.

Flop of the year: There have been so many that I think a top 10 is required:

10. So You Think You Can Dance? - this was one of the more surprising flops of the year after the first series did OK, but the ratings this year were very poor, and deservedly so, as the show was pretentious and dull.
9. Torchwood: Miracle Day - a massive decline both on the last series and across the series classifies it as a flop.
8. Gordon's Great Escape - must surely be Ramsay's lowest ever ratings?
7. Don't Scare The Hare - what the bloody hell was this? It was absolutely dismal in every sense, and thankfully so were the ratings. The only reason it isn't higher up the list is that it was never really a primetime show in the first place, but make no mistake, this was a disaster.
6. Jamie's Dream School - this was probably Jamie's first ever flop, and it was a big one. Considering all the hype and the big names involved, seeing the ratings halve across the run was rather surprising.
5. Show Me The Funny - this was a total stinker and must be up there as some of ITV's lowest ever Monday night ratings. A slight rally for the final keeps it from the top spot, but make no mistake, this was a bona fide flop.
4. It's All About Amy - need I say more?
3. Outcasts - this has to be the biggest drama flop of the year. It's been a long time since a drama was shunted to a late night slot like that but the dismal Outcasts deserved it.
2. The Marriage Ref - cheap, tacky, unoriginal, the list goes on. Why ITV commissioned this show despite it flopping in the US and seeing the pilot is anyone's guess. But it just about fails to make the top spot due to...

1. Born To Shine - wow, this one was just ghastly. Not only were the ratings and the quality of the show dreadful, but the fact that the show aired in one of ITV's biggest slots of the week and the effects it had on Law and Order after it confirms it as the biggest flop of the year in my book. 1.8m in the Sunday 8pm slot is beyond unacceptable.

New hit of the year: Frozen Planet. The ratings for this were phenomenal for a factual show, and despite a midseason dip, Frozen Planet was massive.

Jaw-dropping rating of the year: Celebrity Juice. This show's ratings doubling over the last year to year and a half has been fantastic, and is made even more superb by the fact that just 3 years ago the first series averaged only 0.3m. A true success story for ITV2. Honourable mention for Luther.

Mystifying rating of the year: Big Fat Gypsy Weddings. Just how? And why? An honourable mention goes to The Walton Sextuplets: Moving On.

“So glad that flopped” of the year: Born To Shine. It was just lazy programme making, and thankfully the viewers didn't lap it up as ITV probably expected them to. Honourable mentions for: The Marriage Ref, It's All About Amy and Tamara Ecclestone: Billion $$ Girl.

“Such a shame that flopped” of the year: Penn & Teller: Fool Us. I really liked this show, but sadly the viewers just didn't take to it. The dismal schedule surrounding it didn't help. Honorable mentions for: Impossible, Taggart and Minute To Win It.

Best Channel: BBC1. It's just so consistently solid, and never seems to collapse. Honourable mentions for ITV1 for its success in drama and Sky1 for its success in comedy.

Honourable mention: Danny Cohen, who seems genuinely ambitious and is a force for good in TV. He's making some moves that Jay Hunt would never have dreamed of (going for The Voice, dumping QI) and it'll be interesting to see how things unfold.

Worst Channel: Channel 4. It has no identity whatsoever as has been discussed, and is going nowhere fast. It isn't finding any new hit dramas or comedies as it is too niche, and their factual slate is unoriginal, lazy and derivative, ie. very Jay Hunt.

Dishonourable mention: Jay Hunt. Completely clueless. No ambition, no creativity and completely out of her depth. C4 need to get rid of her (and George Dixon when they're at it).

BBC1's overnight weeknight slot average for 2011 was 4.8m, exactly the same as 2010. The first 3/4 of the year was particularly strong for BBC1, up decently from last year. The last quarter was relatively weak, down over 10% y-o-y. January was the highest rated month whilst October was the weakest. July and August experienced the biggest y-o-y rises, up an impressive 20%. October was the weakest, down 25%. In terms of days of the week, Wednesdays was (perhaps surprisingly) BBC1's top weeknight 9pm slot with the likes of The Apprentice and Frozen Planet performing strongly. Monday to Wednesday all were up 0.5m y-o-y. The weakest slot was Thursdays, down 0.8m y-o-y.

In terms of BBC1 v ITV1, for at least the 6th year running BBC1 had the higher yearly overnight weeknight 9pm slot average, with the gap between the two channels slightly larger than last year (exc +1). To 2 decimal places, BBC1 won 6 months (Jan, Mar, Jun, Jul, Aug, Dec) whilst ITV1 won 6 months (Feb, Apr, May, Sep, Oct, Nov). BBC1 beat ITV1 on Tue, Wed, Fri whilst ITV1 did better than its competitor on Mon and Thu.

I agree. Last night's schedule was dreadful. Not something you expect from BBC One at this time of year. I think by and large though outside of Xmas Day and Boxing Day it's not been the best Christmas schedule really.

Friday and Thursday down - a sign that Jay Hunt's 'swapping' of drama and comedy in those days was a good thing?
(Certainly Miracle Day would have fitted Fridays better imo - but thats more a quality issue!)

Although to be fair - the Miranda/HIGNFY ratings show that two panel shows are what hurt and the Beeb should try for some more sitcoms (their massively lacking comedies atm)

Tuesday dropping - can't say am surprised. ITV's Summer was awful, and Beeb actually had its strongest in Q3. I think ITV got surprised by the attack in there of strong BBC shows - whilst they used fluff to keep going for well...X Factor and Doc Martin...

Torchwood wasn't really a flop, was it? Sure, it started with over 6 million and ended up averaging 5.2m across the series, but that's not really in flop territory. The last few episodes picked up in ratings, and it was only about a million down on the 2009 run. Most episodes put on a million in timeshift and did large numbers on iPlayer too. Definitely well ahead of something like Outcasts.

A typical way to fill an ITV1 schedule, 21 year old clips of cats falling off walls. I'm surprised 3 million people still bother with YBF as it is the same old stuff.
However, on to the subject of flops, did the Next Top Model franchise falter this year as I'm sure Charnham said ratings were well down.
Also the award for inexplicable schedule filler- repeats of Ladette to Lady on ITV1, who really wanted to watch a repeat of a reality show that has been axed. I suppose someone might find some musty recordings of Celebrity Fit Club and put them on one night.

Red or Black was certainly a bigger flop just from the cost alone (it lost a heck of a lot of money)
But Torchwood never 'flopped' - but I suspect most of its audience wouldn't come back for another series without major changes. (it averaged 5 million, in the summer - and on Thursdays - decent enough)

Agreed. The channel has no backbone, it's more or less spine-less. It's lost the creative and controversial edge it had, and its programming is far too safe. It pioneered reality TV in a sense as Big Brother was the first of its kind; it also made breakfast TV fun with the Big Breakfast, with gritty and controversial soap Brookside, shows like The Word etc; it was alternative and edgy and that was what made Channel 4 exciting to watch. Jay Hunt is really out of her depth - strange because I didn't think she was too bad on the BBC; not as good as Fincham when he was at the BBC, IMO. I heard a lot of George Dixon in my lurking days when he was at BBC - was he as bad at the BBC?

Maybe wrong person, but someone with a name beginning with C did say BNTM was well down. Also this series would get an award for being the most female show, as 80 pc of viewers are women.
Curiosity value award- 350,000 people a night tuned in to see how a group of promiscuous Geordies behaved in Geordie Shore. Most Geordies were not amused.

I cannot define Channel 5 based on the home grown showbiz tat that they commission. People watch C5 for movie premieres, CSI, NCIS, The Mentalist, Castle etc. They have some decent UK shows such as Eddie Stobart, Hotel/Restaurant Inspector. Europa League did well for them when decent clubs were featured, they have something to look forward to in 2012. Most of the rubbish is shown before 7pm or after 10pm ie outside primetime.

Channel 5 just need to concentrate on 7pm-10pm for the next 366 days. Having 1098 hours to fill does seem to be a daunting task, especially with around 5% audience share - I don't envy the owners.

I'm not sure Torchwood was technically a flop ratingswise.
It recieved a lot of criticism from die-hard fans, making it seem like a flop.

I'd say Red or Black was more of a flop than Torchwood.

well ive just had a quick look on wikipeidea, and it would see the ratings for Cycle 7, are equal if not better than Cycle 6.

Cycle 7 has 4 episodes that are 500,000 or more, where as Cycle 6 has no episodes over 500,000 Cycle 5 does not have any episode over 400,000.

So in conclusion I would say that ratings for Next Top Model are going up, not down.

Hit of the Year: 2 Broke Girls. A funny, witty comedy about two women. This 2011-12 season is the season for women, with New Girl also doing well, and male comedies flopping (Man Up, Work It will do).

Honourable Mentions: In terms of quality, The Good Wife. In terms of ratings, ABC's attempts at serialised drama may finally have pulled off by Revenge and Once Upon A Time.

Flop Of The Year: H8R on The CW. Horrible programme, horrible ratings. Even The CW should be doing better.

Dishonourable Mentions: Terra Nova, House, Man Up, Extreme Makeover, Ringer, Allen Gregory.

Jaw-Dropping Rating Of The Year: Fear Factor getting a 3.5 for NBC.

“Such a shame that flopped” of the year: Off The Map on ABC. A pretty decent medical drama, given a hideous time slot.

Best Channel: USA Network. Suits, Fairly Legal, Covert Affairs, Royal Pains, Psych, White Collar, Neccessary Roughness, Burn Notice, In Plain Sight and WWE all getting some pretty great ratings.

Honourable Mentions: ABC for their rejuvinations, CBS for keeping the ratings up and The Good Wife on air.

Worst Channel: NBC. Awful new programmes, but I have hope for Smash and Awake.

Dishonourable Mention: FOX News. Just trash.
