Although EE is popular here, Coronation St still has a bigger following and quite often people who like the one soap don't like the other. Mind you Coronation St doesn't seem to be the big thing like it was up here in the nineties.

Unless Glenn has interviewed 100s of people in his local town, I don't know how he has come to this conclusion that nobody cares about EE in the North West. In the office I work, besides TXF and SCD nobody seems to watch anything mainstream, the only shows people talk about are either trendy programmes (Inbetweeners etc) or freak show stuff (The world's fattest man etc)

It seems to be he is just trying to slot in his usual Corrie bashing into a night when Corrie isn't even on. Stuff about the viewers all being pensioners will no doubt follow.

It seems any praising of EE has to be matched by criticism of CS (and vica versa) even when CS isn't even relevant to the discussion.

Most of the scene's were on Branning/Butcher/Wicks family most of the time and we didn't get Alfie being an idiot or Humour from Kim ect.

You didn't read my post, I said EE is popular here, but Coronation St has a bigger following, same as I imagine down South EE is a bigger show, but Coronation St has its fans. Both shows have roughly similar audiences, but CS is the bigger show here. This isn't CS bashing in the least.
Actually the times I go to Yorkshire, the biggest soap there is Emmerdale. Now that's not surprising.

Andy23 is right, there is no need to diss Corrie tonight, EE deserves nothing but praise, and too diss Corrie or even Cheryl Cole off the back of it is wrong.

Really kinda hoping David sticks around, nice to see Bianca spend some time with him, even if you know he has to go back to Holby at some point.

That's a rather simplistic view though. I'm in the north west and I'd say EastEnders is quite popular and probably more popular than Corrie among the younger audience, but you're perhaps right that the older viewers would opt for Corrie - and they do make up the bulk of the television audience.

My sister, who is 40, and her two teenage daughters watch EE and never watch Corrie, but a lot of people who are older much prefer Corrie here. I know when I was a teenager, the in things to watch soap wise were always Brookside and EE and CS was considered deeply uncool.
As I pointed out in an earlier post, CS biggest following is in what used to be the Granada, Border and Yorkshire regions and also it's a big deal in Northern Ireland. This isn't knocking the show at all- it's just I never warmed to it, maybe because my family put it on instead of Blake#s 7.

As the latter is a convicted murderer with a penchant for web-cams - you are right to choose the former I am not sure if I would like to meet a soap actor in real-life.

I hope EE rated well against HP, but sub 10m please so I can score some points in the RPG.

I'm Lancashire born and bred and still live here. I can assure you EE does not play second fiddle to Corrie.

It's a distant third, behind Emmerdale which seems to have just as devoted a following as Corrie.

Massive disappointment from BBC1 tonight. As miserable an episode of Eastenders as I have ever seen, padded out to 70 tortuous minutes. An utterly incomprehensible and turgid episode of Sherlock, much too clever for it's own good, which makes me wonder what all the fuss was about. Then an almost laugh free episode of AbFab which wasn't a patch on the Christmas Day one.

I might have to revise down even my lowish ratings expectations. It was as disappointing a trio of shows from BBC1 as I have seen in a long time.

I hope ITV1 has taken them to the cleaners.

I wouldn't go within a mile of Leslie Grantham, but I have met the actor who played Seth Armstrong in Emmerdale Farm and found him all right.
Soap actors will be like anyone else, some will be fine, some will be horrible, but I do feel sorry for them when they are sacked from a soap as they're often typecast. I know that Len Adamson( Len Fairclough) ended up bankrupt and the actor who played Ernest Bishop never worked in television again.

Should be a huge night for the Beeb. Great stuff.

11m+ for EastEnders and around 9m for Sherlock.

call me old fashioned but I like to keep a good distance between me and a celebrity, so I never know them well enough to disappoint me. That said I did meet Anneka Rice and she just as sexy as she was on the telly.



Really what is the point in a celebrity if you take them out the bubble you have placed them in and let them disappoint you.

You have been more negative about the Beeb this Christmas than GeorgeS has been for all of last year.

that is pretty absurd, given that ITVs only hope is a Harry Potter movie, many people will have already seen (completely legally) elsewhere.

CS does seem slightly more popular in West Cumbria, but EE does have a very big following here as well. I think a lot has to do with what you prefer and what you grew up with.
As for Ab Fab, not impressed with the Christmas Day episode, and that Baron character with an awful mockney accent was just an embarassment.
If EE gets 11 million, all well and good.

Just adding to Robbie's point, I can believe what he says about Corrie's popularity in Lancashire as its the soap's homeland. Anyone older on here know if Crossroads beat CS in the ATV region?

On the general point that the North likes Corrie more, yeah I can see that being true, but lets not turn it into a big thing.

If EE gets 11 million out of its regular slot, then this is a massive achievement.

GlennA- Coronation Street isn't as old-skewing as you might think. About 30% of its audience is aged 65+, obviously that's higher than EastEnders which is quite a young skewing programme. But 30% in the 65+ demo in general BBC1/ITV1 terms is not that high. Programmes which are proper old-skewing shows are things like Countryfile, Antiques Roadshow, crime dramas like Midsomer Murders where almost 50% of the audience is aged 65+!
