Girls Aloud's Sound Of The Underground was recorded (but as far as I am aware never released) by another girlband before they got the song on Popstars:The Rivals.

First Cut is the Deepest was written by Cat Stevens and was on one of his albums. PP Arnold released it as a single in 1967 I think. Rod Stewart might have had the biggest hit with it.

Harry Nilsson has a big hit with Without You but I never knew Badfinger brought it out a while before he did:

The Saturdays - Why Me, Why Now from their first album Chasing Lights was a demo by Alex Cartana. Fall from the same album was originally demoed by an artist called Ina but it could have been a demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPpazPvVP7A

Girls Aloud's Sound Of The Underground was recorded (but as far as I am aware never released) by another girlband before they got the song on Popstars:The Rivals.
And that band was called 'Orchid.'

I knew Boy Meets Girl (of Waiting For A Star fame) wrote Whitney's I Just Wanna Dance; didn't know they'd released the demo; found it on YouTube:

http://youtu.be/uSZP0c1pA1g

And I never knew Kim Carnes' Bette Davis Eyes was originally done by Jackie deShannon:

Cover: http://youtu.be/3Al9blQOhNw
Original: http://youtu.be/FAQsOJbs-yo

Also remember One True Voice? Sacred Trust was originally by The Bee Gees!

Cover: http://youtu.be/8pJbk-dZvC0
Original: http://youtu.be/5DU93kQ7o5s
Girls Aloud Version: http://youtu.be/PjAsmYq9Hw4

Also Cher's version of Save Up All Your Tears was originally done by Robin 'First Time' Beck; then covered by Bonnie 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart' Tyler.

Michael Bolton wrote and sang I Found Someone before Cher...

And 'Don't Turn Around' by Aswad was originally a b-side to Tina Turner's song 'Typical Male.'

Ina Wroldsen is the artist in question and had co-written a fair few tracks for other artists, The Saturdays included.

Lori Lieberman performed the original recording of killing me softly
Correct; and the song was about a Don McClean concert Lori went to; she wrote a poem about it and the rest is history....

I was very surprised to discover recently that Sugababes' "Too Lost In You" is in fact a cover version It was originally released back in 1997 by French chanteuse Patricia Kaas.
Any other surprising covers out there (in your opinion)?
And the song is written by Diane Warren; she's very talented!

I think she wrote (or co-wrote) a lot of Saturdays songs.

She's pretty much their permanent songwriter and background vocalist - some fans joke she's the 6th Saturday.

I like this version of The First Cut is the Deepest by Norma Baker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQVjHg7y9Jc

For some reason it took me years to realise that Adeva's Respect

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t21dMFdA0NU

was a cover of Aretha Franklin

[quote=SuperAPJ;55349397]That was a sample rather than a cover. I too remember being surprised at this as I had never heard Supertramp's "Breakfast in America" when the Gym Class Heroes song first came out.

Similarly, I was listening to the radio the other day and was dismayed to hear some 80s act singing the chorus of Jordin Sparks' "S.O.S. (Let The Music Play)". The best part of the song...and Jordin nicked it from someone else.

Let the music play by Shannon, an awesome 1983 floorfiller

Always thought that Robbie Williams version of She's the one was an original by him but it wasn't, it was actually World Party's song originally.
I didn't know that until reading it just then!

'Chains' by The Beatles for me, had no idea it wasn't originally their song. I'd only ever heard their version so just kinda assumed it was theirs. Same with'Twist & Shout' - it's just so theirs that I didn't know for a long long time!

SOTU isn't a cover though, because the Orchid version was never officially released. I don't think I've ever heard it actually - I wonder if anyone else has?

Some of the songs I didn't know were covers: Girls Aloud - Memory Of You, Sugababes - Obsession, Madcon - Beggin', Sugababes - Freak Like Me, Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Take Me Home, The Saturdays - Crashing Down, Diana Vickers - Hit, Leona Lewis - I Will Be.

Every version of this track is amazing. That's a rarity.

I was surprised when I found out that Tina Turned was covering a song that Bucks Fizz had previously recorded (not sure if the where first though) when she did What's Love Got To with It.

And we discussed elsewhere that the start of the Sugababes version is actually from an arcade game!:
