U2 Overated?
So as not to spoil the U2 thread and their appreciation of the band, I thought I'd start a new one for people who think they're really overated... I just find them to be a pop band... They're not the modern day Beatles... Hell, they can't even match up to REM.

I can confirm that U2 are indeed overrated.
But as there aren't any good pop/rock bands in the Northern hemisphere people tend to think they are god's gift. |

I have to agree. I think they are talented, and I like some of their music. But yes, somewhat over-rated in many circles, imho.

I think you need to take their career as a whole when judging how good they are. With such a long career, of course not everything is going to be good but they have written plenty of excellent songs. As well as the 2 obviously brilliant earlier albums, how many bands could release two greatest hits albums, one for the 80's and one for the 90's, as good as U2's?
I'm not their greatest fan but I have alot of respect for them.....and 'One' is still one of my favourite songs of all time.....

Terribly overrated. Bono is a creep. REM are overrated as well.

I can put REM and Radiohead above U2 easily. How are U2 overated, they only put an lp out every 4 years so we hardly hear too much about them. When a band such as U2 and say Depeche Mode put out an lp it should be appreciated because it could be their last

They are one of the select few old style rock acts left in the business. My type of music personally. Not sure there are too many bands around these days that could take their place.

i don't know how overrated they are really. similarly REM - they have both been putting out consistently good music for over 20 years. in that respect as much as anything else, i don't think many come close. and U2 especially have been a great live act over that time, the highlight being the Zoo TV shows, which were just amazing.
if you think back to the late 80s, U2 and simple minds were almost always mentioned in the same breath, but after *once upon a time* simple minds lost it completely. perhaps *sons and fascination* was their *achtung baby*, but less well timed. U2 on the other hand brought out *achtung baby* at exactly the right time, and having already had the huge success of *the joshua tree*, to then go in such a different direction, and produce possibly their finest album, and accompany it with some of the best live shows ever, was really quite something. sure, there are other great bands around - the last couple of years or so has been a great time for music, but time will tell how many of them are still cranking out great albums in 20 years time. and i don't care what anyone says - bono has an amazing voice. This is where I begin to despise Bono though. It was the most ridiculous, over the top, self indulgent, pretentious mess I've ever seen... Just play your ****ing songs, and stop dressing up like Satan.

For a band to last as long as they have and still be relevant, tour and not have to resort to a greatest hits type show, sell as many records and tickets and still get critical acclaim is very rare indeed.
Wait untill you hear "City of Blinding Lights" - it could easily be U2'S biggest ever track. |

weren't they getting a bit pretentious around *the joshua tree*, and then they did a pretty amazing job of reinventing themselves around *achtung baby*. i think during the former they were perhaps guilty of taking themselves too seriously, but since the later they certainly weren't. it was all just a bit entertaining irony. (although i think they overdid it on the *pop* tour)Iain |

And I spent most of my teenage years, off my face, listening to The Wall. Which was also self indulgent and pretentious, but done by people who were still interesting, and were fine players. If it makes people feel better though, I quite liked Johnny Cash singing "One" |
