Is Bush House closing? One of my earliest memories was being allowed with my father to peep into the Turkish language studio in 1959. My father's friend was a Turkish broadcaster. Dan

According to Wikipedia:

The BBC's lease with Kato Kagaku (the Japanese company that owns the building) expires at the end of 2012. The BBC plans to move World Service to Broadcasting House following its ongoing expansion and renovation programme, known as the W1 Project. There have been renewed rumours that the neighbouring London School of Economics may purchase Bush House to expand its campus.

Bit of a shame they don't still use that theme.

A collection of 192 photos documenting the final year of BBC World Service broadcasting from Bush House. Including now defunct studios, studios still in use, general areas and other bits of interest.

The BBC is leaving Bush House this week.

Studio Manager Emma Crowe has created this sound montage about working the night shift in Bush House:

And from Robin the Fog there's The Ghosts of Bush in this homage to the work of the Radiophonic Workshop:

Both of these well worth hearing.

Bogdan Frymorgen on the SOS BBC World Service Facebook group says that:

"BBC World Service will broadcast for the last time from Bush House on the 12th July at midday. The last bulletin will go out from S39 and will no doubt be watched by quite a few people and listened to by millions around the world."

It will be the end of Bogdan's 24 year BBC career and for the past few weeks he has been photographing the building. 124 photographs which he is looking to have published professionally if there is enough interest. Link below, don't know if it is only for people with Facebook accounts:

Post about the BBC leaving Bush House from Jonathan Marks in his blog, includes a link to an excellent HD video on the BBC WS website about the building.

Another huge piece of historic BBC closes, along with White City.

I wonder if they will ever go completely nuts and relocate the magnificent Broadcasting House too?

According to a post on the British DX Club list the final news bulletin will include a tribute to the World Service and Bush House by the outgoing BBC Director-General, Mark Thompson.

Someone somewhere mentioned the Bush House carpets ("horrible" or similar adjective).

Yes they were notably horrible in all my visits too. And same for Harwood House all those years ago, same horrible scrunchy, with trip-you-up folds, nasty green.

Otherwise very pleasant

The BBC World Service has been synonymous with Bush House for 70 years, but on 12 July the news is broadcast from the building for the last time. Here Bogdan Frymorgen and Emma Crowe bid farewell in sound and pictures. Below, Anna Horsbrugh-Porter talks to a producer who first heard the BBC in a Soviet labour camp, and recalls letters from African listeners addressed to The Queen, c/o Bush House.

I hope some of that old kit makes it into a museum. I didn't realise mixing desks that looked like that were still in use! Some of it doesn't look that different from the original Broadcasting House equipment of the 1930s!

Cheers,
David.
