Yes because actors/actresses like Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant (and the rest of the Doctors), Bill Nighy, Bernard Cribbins, Simon Pegg, Richard Wilson. Honor Blackman, John Cleese, Anthony Head, Derek Jacobi, Elisabeth Sladen and Carey Mulligan would never, ever, lower themselves to appear in Doctor Who, would they?

As well as ones like Jo Joyner, June Brown, Michelle Collins, Cheryl Fergison, Tracy-Ann Oberman, Michelle Ryan and Suranne Jones who are all currently or previous soap actresses. They'd never lower themselves to be in Doctor Who either, of course.

Oh. Wait.

So I don't think the argument that Lacey Turner is too good for Doctor Who really stands. She's no better or worse than most of the soap actresses I've mentioned above, and they all had major or minor roles in Doctor Who episodes. Like it or not, Doctor Who is huge, and critically acclaimed. Suggesting that it is beneath some random soap actress is absolutely ludicrous.

I suppose to really impress in kids' TV, you need to be a wiz with sticky back plastic, toilet rolls and washing up liquid bottles.

From the few episodes I've endured over the years, that seems to be a reasonably accurate summary of the role.

Yet here you are deeming them worthy of posting about, anyway.

So soap awards aren't reputable, but the stature of an actress should be measured by the amount of work she does rather than the quality?

With so many archaic reference points, I had to keep checking we weren't discussing Downton Abbey.”

Yeah, they're up there with the Oscars!!

Even that brilliant actor Anthony Cotton waltzed off with one!!

They're never handed out to the "best" actor / actress - only to the current flavour of the month.
Utterly pointless.

They're not worth the cheap metal they're cast in.

Anybody that pays any attention to them needs casting too.

Signing up to play second fiddle is a little different than making a guest appearance for a fat paycheque. Do you think Carey Mulligan would still entertain it now? Kudos for name-dropping Christopher Eccleston, though. What an exemplary actor he truly is ...

Hah! Just to break up this silly who's better or who's worse - I think Lacey Turner would be a crap character in it!!(She'd simply be playing Stacey from EE - that's all she can do!!)
I'd rather see Miranda Hart as a companion! Now there's a companion to deal with!

I reckon she'd make a great companion , she's cute , sexy , perfect

She was excellent playing Stacey and wouldn't mind her playing The Doctor's Assistant.

I mentioned all the Doctors. And yes, CE is a good actor and he's done a range of things. Unlike Lacey.

I think she's perfect companion material. Lacey is completely different to Stacey in Real Life, everyone who says she'd just be playing Stacey is wrong, not my opinion, its fact, Lacey is very nervous and very shy in real life, where as Stacey is a flirtatious loud mouth, and her character in Being Human was completely different, not sure about Frankenstein's bride . I'd like to see her play a character who grows and develops. Not like Amy or Rose, who sh'owed very little development, Amy is still the bland girl she started as, and Rose loved the Doctor when she met him, and loved him when he regenerated, and loved him when she left. I'd rather see Lacey play a character like Martha, who starts off in the Doctor's shadow at the start of her first series, I'd like to see her be a bit cowardly, but curious of the wonders of the universe, who by the end of her first series becomes brave and saves the Universe and the Doctor. I'd support it, right now she's the only actress I see as companion potential right now, and I reckon the BBC do not want to lose her because of her EE success and will probably be asking Moffat to take her on board.

Really? You're going to use two of the greatest British actresses of this generation to argue against me? Really?

How are they even relevant? Helen Mirren is a movie star, the only television roles she generally does are one-off specials. Same goes for Julie Walters.

Besides which, you can't say either of them wouldn't like to appear in it at some point. They might like the show. You know, like millions of others do?

Any young, aspiring actress would likely kill for a chance to play the Doctor's companion.

Take away the soaps and talent shows, and Doctor Who is the biggest series on television. And unlike the soaps, you don't share screen time. If you're the Doctor or the companion, you are the star. And a big one at that.

The man's so wooden he makes Keanu Reeves seem gifted.

So it's not "probably the biggest female role on British Television" after all, then?

The title of the thread states 'Doctor Who['s] assistant'.

So I can't speak for two actresses, but you can speak for all the rest?

Is Downton Abbey a soap, or a talent show?

Of course they "share screen time". It's hardly Talking Heads.

Lacey Turner is TOO GOOD to be sided with Matt Smith, find a decent doctor first (IMO bring David Tennant back!) and then bring LACEY in! She'd be great! OR... have her as a FEMALE DOCTOR as that's been suggested A LOT!

I was just thinking this the other day, she'd be perfect!

It's neither.

It's utterly overrated, over saturated garbage.

Surely there is a lesbian drama Karen Gillan and Lacey Turner can team up on? I think that has to be the priority of any right-thinking male.

As soon as I saw this is thought 'YES!!!' She's a brilliant actress and would be great for the role of Companion. She's sexy, fiesty and she can confuse and amuse The Doctor. She's perfect!!!

presumably gay men arent 'right-thinking' then? I'm sure thats not what you meant, only joking, couldnt resist playing troll for a sec sorry :P

As for Lacey Turner on Doctor Who...I guess it would be a good role for her, I've never actually watched Doctor Who and wouldnt watch it if she was in it either BUT I think she'd be lucky to get the part, even if she did it for a year...

Jenna Coleman looks set to be leaving after the Christmas episode this year and I really feel Lacey's talent is being wasted on Eastenders. Come on Steven Moffat, cast Lacey Turner as the new companion.

Yep I can see it.

Im sure she could duck out of Walford for a while to film.

Don't think DTC would let Lacey out to film for 9 months! We still haven't found out what the bloody key is about! And there's her pregnancy

The next companion will likely be a total unknown, like how Karen Gillian was.

Yep. Probably another woman too.

Spoiler
Even a half series male only companion would be nice.

Lacey chose not to have a break from Eastenders to not film anymore Our Girl so can't see her wanting a break for dr who?

Plus I would of thought they would go for an assistant a bit older this time so that any romance is not creepy (words of the dr)

Is it now confirmed Jenna is leaving? Thought it might just be rumour again

I don't think it has been confirmed but she'll become one of the most long running companions of all time if she doesn't go this year so it seems very likely.

Lacey would have to actually leave EE, not just take a break. Who takes a full 9 months to film, whe would then need some holiday so that would leave all of 2 months to film on EE? Not really practical for anybody.

I can't see it happening and frankly I wouldn't want it to.

If Lacey went to do Doctor Who, it wouldn't be a break from EE, it would be an exit. Doctor Who takes up pretty much the entire year to film.
