Been hearing around that there are going to be a lot of changes to Sky in 2012 can anyone shed some light on this?

Depends what you mean by changes. Plenty of new things coming in the new year if that's what you mean.

Scroll down to "coming soon" and look at the month by month listings to give you an idea of what to expect

This for January for example

January
On the 24th According to Broadcastnow. (Radiomike)
Sky Arts 1 and Sky Arts 1 HD move from 243 and 244 to 129
Sky Arts 2 and Sky Arts 2 HD move from 245 and 256 to 130
Sky 2 moves from 129 to 121
Sky Living Loves closes down
Sky 3D moves from 217 to 170
Sky Living +1 moves from 121 to 123

Have you never looked at that thread before?

As you can see, don't get too excited, not too much there to generate much excitement that I can see

I don't class epg changes as something new. Think the op was referring to new services.

Well that list usually include new services and it does, like the Sky F1 HD channel coming in March and a few later during the year like the long awaited Electric Sofa that might be coming. If there are non listed I would say there are no new services coming at the moment and therefore, as I said, nothing there to get excited about.

I gave that link as it is probably one of the best places to look that I know of.

The OP asked you what are they were, well what are they then?

CDT101 works for Sky I believe and usually knows what is around he corner so if he says we have exciting things coming in 2012 then I would believe him.
Let's just say he is that reliable, that when it comes to rumours about new services from sky, I ignore then until CDT101 confirms them.

That must be the "Sky Anywhere" service. [not sure if it's still that] Along the lines of BT Openzone.

Free wifi hotspots for Sky broadband subscribers.

Appreciate the kind words, I do work for sky but I can understand some peoples scepticism. As for some of the things coming in the new year, as mentioned Sky Wifi, for those on sky broadband. With sky taking over the Cloud there will be over 5000 free wifi hotspots at launch. The bigger picture with regards to the Cloud will be Sky Anywhere, where you will be able to access not only Sky Go but your planner on the move also (hd+ boxes only). Expect to hear an announcement on fibre broadband in the new year too. There will be an updated epg, where it will become an HD epg, with slightly different fonts to the current epg, and also expect Dolby Digital over hdmi to be added like with the non + hd boxes. The Shared Planner feature is due to start testing soon, where if you have multiple hd boxes you can view a recorded programme on any of the hd boxes in your house (provided they are linked to your router). Anytime+ will be rolled out to other isp's and is currently going through more staff testing.

Except for any extra cost relating to fibre broadband, all those things mentioned in my post above will be free.

Quite an exciting year ahead and thanks for sharing the information.

so this will require new STBs then surely? as it's currently a hardware limitation rather than a software one?

I've been led to believe it's a software issue as it's already available on the non+ hd boxes. Merely passing on what I've been told. Will try and get a definitive answer for you.

the non + HD boxes are new hardware though, so that can't be used as a comparison really. (i have both a 1tb box and the non + HD box).

if it's just a software issue then why has it never been enabled before?

I asked that very question. It's not often us installers get to speak to the tech guys so as you can imagine it was a brief conversation. To be honest sky have been busy working on fixes and updates to the current software as well as planning to launch the new 'hd' epg due next year, so may explain why it hasn't been enabled yet. I will chase it up though and find out if it is merely a software update required as the tech guy suggested.

i hope it is just a software fix, but i remain sceptical until it actually happens.
also, isn't the EPG supposed to be "HD" already ?

It's not HD though. It was called the sky hd guide but wasn't in hd. The new one is in HD and is way better than the current epg with a few subtle tweaks to it too.

Sorry to go off topic CTD101 but can you help?

I've got a Thomson HD box and both USB ports are enabled which allows me to run a pair of USB powered speakers to listen to the radio without using my amp or having my TV on.

I bought a pair for my Father--in-Law who's got a new Amstrad HD box, but I can't get any power out of the USBs, any way of enabling them?

Freesat is free, we know by the name but it has its limitations that is why it is free.
