Here is the new Judge Dredd film uniform (on the right). On the left is my photoshop of how it should have looked:

http://img864.imageshack.us/img864/2...parison123.jpg

The version on the right - what we're getting in the film - is ludicrously overpadded. It's messy looking, ugly, has a huge collar sticking out the back of Dredd's neck too. The version on the left is so much neater, true to the original look, sleek. That's how Judge Dredd should look in a feature film.

The new uniform is hideous at every level. Designed by an idiot, I suspect.

Is the film american ? I suspect it will be vaguley reminiscent of robocop (the film and the uniform) to tie in/cash in/compete with the upcoming robocop remake.

Well the original uniform was designed when Mega City 1 was a largely law abiding environment, currently it is not so and if the film reflect this then the uniform they are going with would be a much more sensible option. If you compare it to the Batman films where none but the Adam West version has any resemblance to the original comic strip costume, ie body armour etc and I don't recall any great issue with that except when they went too far (Bat nipples?).

I'm not in any way suggesting that the comic strip version should be changed but neither am I feeling insulted in anyway (long standing 2000AD reader 30+ years ) or feeling particularly fan-boyish about this. I shall wait until the film comes out, watch it first and then the very worst I could feel would be disappointed about an opportunity squandered (again!).

Bat nipples. Had to laugh at that.

I'm not expecting my main complaint to be about the lumpiness of Dredd's uniform, nor how the Lawmaster might look. I'm just hoping they can get some get some crowd-scene extras in and decent CGI for MC1 background.

Oh no! Nobody remembered to pay for a script...

Hmm, that lawmaster photo...

If it looks like that in the final film it's going to look laughable. Looks like someone stuck a pyramid shaped cardboard box on the front!

"Welcome to the city of the future...

Mega-Cheap 1."

It's possible to a 100 percent realistic version of the Judge Dredd comic 2000AD uniform. Here it is:

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/719...iformremix.jpg

That is the 1995 Judge Dredd uniform but scaled down to look realistic - how a real life Judge Dredd would look. Yes, if he really existed.

I scaled down the shoulder pads, repositioned them, removed the codpiece, removed the bright buttons on the gloves, added the X to the visor. I altered the shape of the helmet at the sides.

I reduced the chains connected to the badge and lowered the chain so it doesn't start at the neck line. That version does not have any elbow pads but it's possible elbow pads might restrict arm movement when you bend the arm. Elbow pads could be added, of course.

The image is how I imagine Judge Dredd to look in a new film.

I altered the image. Here it is again:

Looks like the real deal! If anyone has any decent photos of an actor they'd like to play Judge Dredd, I can stick it over Stallone's face. My post is about the uniform rather than the actor. Stallone looked the part but it's open to debate his acting and personality were suited to the part.

Karl Urban if he really looked the part of Judge Dredd:

http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5...edreddempi.jpg

And next to the real Karl Urban as Judge Dredd:

http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/1...nvsurban2b.jpg

As you can see, he looks nothing like Judge Dredd!

Neither does Judge Dredd.

Also, Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger didn't have freakishly long faces, but they were both very good as the Joker. And the Ledger Joker's costume and skin didn't even look remotely like the comics' version.

I'm not convinced that having everything looking exactly like it does in the most iconic version of the comic strip is necessarily the mark of a good adaptation.

Fleetway Editions used to hire a guy to do public appearances dressed in a very faithful recreation of the Dredd costume. With all due respect to him, he looked like a right silly arse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lk578M4pts4#t=8m22s

That clip is the best proof huge shoulder pads look ridiculous in live action videos/films. The smaller pads route is the way to do a live action version of Judge Dredd. This is the way to do the uniform:

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/719...iformremix.jpg

By the way, 99 percent of all 2000AD Dredd imagery shows him with a long chin, pronounced jawline. The first year or so of Judge Dredd in 2000AD depicted him with a smaller jawline but that changed by the time of the Cursed Earth saga. Judge Dredd should have been played by Matthew Fox from Lost. Totally nails the part in Speed Racer. I will upload the clip.

IMHO Matthew Fox is the best choice to play Judge Dredd in a new feature film. Here he is from the film Speed Racer - clip is in high definition 720p. Check out the way he says

"Maybe you forgot how it feels to stand up and be a man."

And:

"The only way you'll ever stop these people is to bring them to justice."

Totally the way Judge Dredd would say the lines.

And here is he with the helmet on:

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/589/dreddmf1custom.jpg

Really looks the part!

Moot point. The film has been shot with Karl Urban, not Matthew Fox.

I'm not sure what you get out of being so negative about a film based on so little information? I tend to reserve judgement until I've seen at least a few minutes of a finished film. You seem to have written it off already on the strength of a few photographs.

I am basing all my opinions on released photos - that seems a fair thing to do. I haven't seen any actual footage but the photos give a sense how Urban and the uniform will look.

But haven't you already demonstrated exactly why it's unwise to take a photo out of context?

Three versions of the uniform:

http://img862.imageshack.us/img862/5843/dreddx3.jpg

My altered Stallone version on far left.

The Judge Minty version in the middle (from the forthcoming fan film although that image is actually Karl Urban's face).

And the Karl Urban version on the right (that is Judge Lex, not Judge Dredd).

I think the version on the far left is the best compromise. It remains true to the comic book version but with smaller but not tiny pads.

The new film is already in post-production. They didn't cast the bloke out of Speed Racer. They didn't use the sort of costumes you want.

Honestly, what do you expect the film-makers to do? Scrap all the footage and start again with Matthew Fox in tight fetishwear?

I was making observations. As punishment for being rude to me you must watch the Judge Dredd film again and explain why Fergee is the greatest supporting character in film history. I expect a 10,000 word essay.

I watch the Judge Dredd movie pretty much every time it shows up on TV. I like it. I think the novelty of seeing a reasonably authentic looking/acting Angel gang on screen out-weighed any liberties they took elsewhere.

I haven't really followed 2000AD for decades but I was clearing out a loft and found a bunch of early issues and it appears to have eased me back into comics again. Been reading some of the DC 52 stuff, specifically Suicide Squad and Detective Comics.

Dredd's original uniform looks positively weedy by comparison to the new movie version. I like the new look - Dredd wouldn't get away patrolling Cricklewood dressed the way he used to, never mind MC1.

2000AD got quite adult and dark didn't it? Do they do digital editions?

Digital copies are available from the official 2000AD website shop:

http://shop.2000adonline.com/categories/comics

and

Clickwheel:

https://www.clickwheel.net/features/219

Online 2000AD progs are less expensive than the hardcopy versions. Retail 2000AD costs £.2.25, online it's around £1.54.

The current prog - Prog 2012 - is 100 pages (on sale for three weeks) and costs more, £4.50.
