I prefer Leona's cover of "Run" rather than Snow Patrol.

Snow Patrol's really annoys me, sounds all samey.

Leona brings it alive.

Jus' sayin!

Don't think that's particularly unusual, I prefer Leona's version too. So do a lot of people hence why it was so successful.

I agree, it's absolutely beautiful. I do like the Snow Patrol version but Leona's cover is in my top 20 of all time.

I like both versions too, but Leona manages to capture the real emotion of it.

She completely nails the song vocally and emotionally. It's her cover of Hurt I have the issue with

I prefer it too.

Original from Snow Patrol for me. Never want to hear Leona's version. It's full of false emotion. Just because you've slowed a song down doesn't make it more emotive.

I like both versions, but do prefer Leona's cover of it.

Prefer Leona's, very uplifting. When I first glimpsed the thread title I thought this was going to be a blasphemous thread about Hurt.

It's a typical X Factor cover

I prefer Leona's as well, her voice is just so magical on it.
It is crazy!

The real emotion of it??? Considering snow patrol wrote it, they will sing it to convey exactly what they were feeling when they wrote it.

I like Leona's version best!

Snow Patrol's version just doesn't have the big climax at the end.

Not necessarily. Badfinger wrote Without You, but it was nowhere near as emotive as the Mariah cover in the 90s...

Leona's version of Run gets right to the essence of the song imo. Her vocals were stunning, and there's just something indescribable about the whole song...she really really did sing it well. I like the SP version, but I find Gary's voice to be to dreary for me, and whilst it's still a great song to listen to, Leona's voice/emotion just really takes the whole song to another level

Snow Patrol, the track builds and builds to an epic ending. Yes Leonas does the same but for me i lose interest for minutes and minutes until she really goes for it and the choir comes in.
The snow patrol original keeps you hooked from start to finish and because the key change isn't so obvious it has more of a lasting effect imo.

As Gary Lightbody said, a good song is one where people can interpret the lyrics so that it's relevant to them. It's not about what the songwriter intended, it's about what the listener gets from the song. He described the cover as 'phenomenal' and seemed to think the interpretation of the song was spot on.

I can't stand Leona's version.

It's just so bland, like her

Prefer the Snow Patrol version tbh as I think that Leona's version although good, substitutes vocal gymnastics for emotion. And don't even get me started on Hurt.....

Leona's version is typically overblown and over the top. There's no subtlety. To me it just sounds like typical X Factor fare, all bluster and no real substance

I agree, people can interpret a song in different ways, but to say that someone who covers the song has a better understanding of the emotion of the song than those who wrote it iis silly as they did not write it. She made a nice version of the song though.

I'm not saying that Leona's version or Mariah's version are not more emotive than the originals, or even better for that matter. All I'm saying is that you can't say that a cover artist understands a song more than the people who wrote it. I guess emotion is subjective anyway as I don't find Mariah's version of without you emotional at all, to me it's just 3 minutes of very good vocal gymnastics. As for snow patrol, I think there is something to the understated performance of run, for me it conveys desperation and a kind of sad resignation of the situation.

This. This. This. This. This.

Throwing in over-singing at the end is equally ineffective at making it more emotive.

exactly, but just look at the x factor contestants, they too think that warbling is an expression of emotion... in itself it isnt. great singers know how to portray emotion through singing without over singing/melisma.
