there have been loads of rappers with 'pop appeal' as you put it.. MC hammer was a household name in his heyday and sold millions as was LL cool J.
The biggest selling female rapper(s) of all time are salt n pepa who are multi paltinum...and easily outsold missy and lauryn and lil kim and every other female rapper.

Minaj dosnt set any precedents with fashion as well...besides the fact she is ripping off missy all she does is dye her hair weird colours.
hip hop fashion is every where, when you see someone wearing a pair of trainers for somthing other than sport that is hip hop when you see kids wearing there jeans round there knees and a basball cap that is hip hop.
Nearly every pop boyband/girl band uses hip hop fashion at some point look at the latest ones little mix..Even east 17 used to dress in a 'hip hop style'
Tommy hillfiger used to pay rappers to wear his clothes becuase when they did it sold. Adidas paid run dmc to wear there clothes.
Wu tang clan have there own fashion label wu wear which has been going for years as does jay z”

lauryn hill isnt even a hardcore rapper like missy or lil kim as lil kim has started to some singing a little bit. i see missy does a little singing also but she's a hardcore rapper.

lauryn also sang in the sister act part 2 and she was quite a singer and of course the killing me sofly is what proves that she can sing. nicki is also singing in all her songs besides doing the rapping.

I also know people who like hardcore hip hop who like Nicki tbh. So I can believe what you're saying there.

She's also gone very pop lately though, with Super Bass, Turn Me On, Where Them Girls At. I think she has the ability to appeal to a wide audience (hence her popuarity), although based on her most popular songs in 2012, she's a pop artist to most of the general public, since they won't know her other songs.

true. I dont think its her fault. she being the add on rap artist ie flo-rida/pitbull to maximise exposure, impact and her wealth (nothing wrong with that) she originally wasnt going to release super bass as a single, as did it on em was set for release (so she still was a hardcore rap artist) but super bass took off, thanks to selena gomez and taylor swift (disney generation and country fans) and there you have it. did it on em peaked at 48 (i think) on the hot 100 but did well on urban airplay charts as all her singles have. and super bass went 3X platinum (3m copies sold). it was also her breathrough, and her first top 10 hit, and just kept on rising, airplay kept it charting for AGES! and its still being frequently played.

^ Yeah, I heard that too. She said she only released it because Taylor Swift said it was her favourite song on a radio interview, and Selena Gomez put a Youtube video up about it.

sad that that became the biggest hit off pink friday, and was the most pop orientated song too, well oddly, no surprises there. at least it got her billboard rising star, and for a female rap artist, thats an achievement, she's sold about 7-8m records so far, not bad, seeing as bar one, all her singles were non-top 10 hits. well hot 100 I mean, she's been dominating urban radio this year and last year too! I hope she has a great top 3 placing with her next LP, maybe even number one now she has attention. I hope radio 1 dont ignore her, until moment for life she was ignored by them with only 1xtra playing her. and they had the nerve to play super bass!! but ignore your love/right through me!

^ I'm pretty sure her next album will go to #1 in the US easily. Pink Friday even went to #1 in the US, after she released Moment 4 Life as a single (it may not have done well in the charts, but it sold her album more).

I agree though, I wish more hip hop orientated songs could be hits. Not just from Nicki, but it's similar with a lot of artists. Only the songs with lots of electro sounds and big catchy melodic choruses can be big hits atm.

I miss the Nicki from her Mixtapes.. when she was STRAIGHT HIP HOP... no pink/barbie/alter ego rubbish.. she was a plain looking girl who just rapped.

Fast forward and shes totally changed.. she is definately a POP artist now who does the one off Rap verse in hip hop songs (Monster/ Y.U Mad/Dance A$$)

Its a shame really.

If anyone loves Nicki Minaj for what she does NOW.. I advise you to listen to her mixtapes and watch her videos Warning and Itty bitty piggy.. That was the REAL Nicki

1. Nicki Minaj considers herself a recording artist - not a rapper.

2. Nicki Minaj considers herself a popstar - not a hip hop star.

3. Nicki Minaj's favourite music is dance-pop.

if you actually LISTEN to her billboard interviews, you'll see that she is all of those things. shes said she likes to be versatile and not boxed in as an artist. and she is a recording artist

Nick said in a Interview back when she did songs like warning or click clack it she was not being herself she was just acting like how people told her and she thought she had to act to be successful in rap and when she got signed to young money she felt she had more freedom as a artist. I prefer her itty bitty piggy- present day style of rap
