I don't know if you can say one is better than the other. But Nirvana is definitely more influential in that they created a signature sound (the soft/loud type of grunge rock) that has influenced many other bands and musicians. Also Nirvana has better more deeply felt lyrics.
Smashing Pumpkins' music is all over the place. They don't have one sound that people immediately associate with them like you do with Nirvana. Plus, it's much easier to relate to Kurt Cobain as a person and his pain that comes through in Nirvana's lyrics than Billly Corgan who comes off as basically an egotistical jerk.

That isn't anywhere near the truth - Nirvana borrowed heavily their sound from albums like Surfer Rosa. And saying that they were heavily influential is the same as how people say Michael Jackson or Madonna is heavily influencial in pop; mixing up influence over popularity.

Also Nirvana has better more deeply felt lyrics.

What? 1979 evokes more empathy in me than any of Nirvana's albums ever could and that's just one song. I'm all with subjectivity and all that but saying that Nirvana has easier to relate to lyrics is just stupid.

The Smashing Pumpkins for me. I have always thought Nirvana were very over rated musically, but hey that's just me.

I don't think I can choose between them. Nirvana were certainly more consistent, and due to Kurt Cobain's death they never had a chance to release a bad album. Smashing Pumpkins have released a fair amount of rubbish, especially since the reunion, but musically they were always a lot more interesting, ambitious and original than Nirvana. 'Siamese Dream' and 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness' are both great albums, but so are 'Nevermind' and 'In Utero'.

Smashing Pumpkins so much better, all Nirvana did was open the floodgates for Seattle music to be heard and i think there music is so overated, much better bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam emerged.

No they didnt create grunge, they just had a big hit with Smells Like Teen Spirit. Grunge was the name given to Seattle rock music which comprised of many bands. From what ive read in various interviews the sound was created by Mark Arm (of Mudhoney) and Stone Gossard (of pearl Jam) when they were in a guitar shop in the early 80's who then went on to form a band called Green River.

Always believed Nirvana and Kurt Cobains song writing was completely overrated and they were in the right place at the right time. And Kurt wasn't even the most talented member of Nirvana.

Billy Corgan songs writing and creative musical skills were on a whole other level from Kurts.

Nirvana had a consistent bank of good songs whereas Smashing Pumpkins aren't/weren't as consistent however some of their best songs I prefer over Nirvana's best songs.
