I've noticed almost every youtube comment section has turned into an argument about this these days.

I have to say, I am on the "old em" bandwagon. Purely because these days I don't like his flow, his lyrics aren't as witty and who he works with.

I think he started slipping just after Encore, I am aware of his drug problems and stuff, but he just doesn't seem as hungry and not as much venom in his lyrics these days. Maybe it's just to do with him getting older but working with the likes of Rihanna particularly annoyed me because I'd imagine if she was out in 99 and the early 00's he would've dissed her. And let's not even get into Lil Wayne lol

That said I'd rather have an average Eminem than a dead one.

I agree, old Eminem every time. I'd say he started slipping after 'The Marshall Mathers LP' though, that will always be his masterpiece in my opinion. 'The Eminem Show' was good but not really up to the same standard, and 'Encore' for me was really poor except for a handful of great tracks. I think with 'Recovery' he's getting back on track, but even so I can't see him ever matching the quality of his first albums.

Recovery is as good an Eminem album as I have ever heard. While I agree old Eminem is the best, I think he is getting back to that again. His flow and delivery is still as good as ever!

old, it's not even debateable.

It's like saying what is better, Godfather Part I or Godfather Part III?

Not a big fan of Eminem, old or new, but I have to say the old one had a much better flow and a much clearer vision.Even the visuals (video clips, performances) were way more interesting back then and everything he did was pretty iconic for the hip hop culture.Even old Eminem's lyrics, which were way too graphic for my liking at times, sounded much more interesting than his lyrical content now, prime example being 'Roman's Revenge' where I can hear his desperate attempt to re-create the rough misogynistic profile of his past.

And anyway, aside from all that, I choose old Eminem solely based on the fact that old Eminem would NEVER collaborate with someone as horrible as Lil Wayne

Still, I think the "old vs.new" arguments have become rather pointless now. He's growing up, he's not meant to be as fresh and intriguing as he was back in his debut

Old Eminem
But i lost respect for him on the recovery album
He had nothing relevent to say and i felt relied on the likes of likes of Lil Wayne, Pink and Rihanna to attract buzz on the album where as Eminem barely worked with other artists and if he did, it was usually Dre anyway.

I want him to go back to gritty stuff for next album. Recovery felt a bit manufactured.

Old Eminem. He was wild.
I know he's growing into that Jay-Z state of ''Elder Statesman of Hip-Hop'', but he could still be a bit more inventive.
The lyrics are getting rather tedious now, whereas before they entertained or at least shocked.

the eminem show was his last half decent album. he has made to many stupid videos where he was just taking the piss out of other artists and celebrities..and it was always easy targets. and now he keeps on doing lame arse collaborations.
he needs to get back on the drugs...musicians need to take them becuase when they stop they lose there soul and become crap.

The only "recent" song I like of his is Beautiful, but even that was 2009. I was also quite excited when Bad Meets Evil got back together, but it's not been great if I'm honest, nothing like their old songs.

I love both, but I preferred old Eminem. The only album that I haven't really liked was Encore, although there's still a few songs I like from it.

I think the reason I prefer old Eminem is because that's the one I became a fan of. Nostalgia plays a part too, I think.

I imagine the kids that are like 10 years-old now, will grow up liking "new Eminem", because that's the one they fell in love with, if that makes sense. Although, no doubt they'll go back and listen to his older albums, and love those too.

I love Beautiful too. Infact, it's probably his most loved song from Relapse now (by the general public, his core fanbase prefer some of the album tracks). It's the only song from the album that still sells in significant quantities anymore too.

I like old eminem when he done the first humourous single, without me, just lose it, real slim shady etc

I miss that. It always got me excited for the album. Especially then 'guess who's back' intros. Having said that 'we made you' was awful.

Recovery is defo his second strongest album after the eminem show IMO. Love the majority of songs on both of them.

I just want some new eminem material. That 5 year hiatus was death for me. Any eminem is better than no eminem.

I am sure he cares.

Well considering neither Wayne's or Pinks contributions made anything like a buzz, you felt wrong. And considering his and rihanna's track was very, very, very successful, we are back to what I wrote earlier.... "I am sure he cares".

He was 10X better in the early years. Now he's just a slightly better generic rapper.

Yeah, I didn't like that song too much either, and I still honestly think the poor reception to We Made You is the reason he didn't do a single like that for Recovery.

Although, that said, I think We Made You was better than Just Lose It, although back when Just Lose It was out, Eminem was so popular, people would just love whatever he released tbh.

I would like him to release a more humerous and up-beat song as a lead single for his next project though. Like Fast Lane I guess. Not too try-hard like We Made You, but not really serious either. I'm honestly getting fed up of those hip hop ballads like Love the Way You Lie, I Need a Doctor, Airplanes, Lighters, Space Bound, etc. getting released as singles. Everybody keeps complaining he's too depressing, but since those songs are all that the general public hear of Eminem on the radio, no wonder people think that!

I am sure he cares.

I'd say the Lil Wayne track created a "buzz", as it went top 10 on US iTunes as soon as he released the album, which is the reason he released it as the 3rd single probably.

No Love is actually one of my favourites from the album, although I do wish he could've done both verses, or got a different rapper to do it (Lil Wayne isn't my favourite rapper tbh).

Old Eminem was horrible though, some of the most disgusting lyrics. But he was better then perhaps. But I agree with whoever said he's just growing up, he's bound to be less 'fresh' than he used to be.
