Saturday 7th January, BBC1, 8.05pm
Casualty returns to BBC1 after a three-week break with a bang.
The Holby A&E department reopens on New Years' Eve, and immediately, patients come into the department including a drunk teenager who is immediately rushed into resus due to alcohol poisoning. Dr. Josh Caitlin, the new SHO, manages to work his magic and save the teenager who is placed on a ventilator.
A motorsport race is staged that Saturday afternoon. Event organiser Tony Whitmarsh, is keen to get the event going, but the drivers want to boycott the event due to them not being paid. They then agree to drive in the race provided they don't wear a HANS device, which protects their necks from whiplash and damage. Tony is powerless and is forced to let the event go ahead or he'll lose thousands of pounds.
Maggie Coldwell is taking her grandson to the event as a birthday present. Louis is also watching the race. The race begins but a massive pileup ensues at turn 1 with cars rolling, crashing into the wall, and a massive fireball on track. One driver is pronounced dead on impact, and several others are seriously injured. Moments later, the spectator stand collapses and Maggie is badly hurt with some head injuries. Charlie accompanies Dixie and Jeff to the scene of the atrocity and find Charlie is horrified to discover Maggie is involved in the carnage. When Charlie realises the team are being stretched to the limit both on the scene and in A&E, he makes a snap decision, telling Louis to drive Maggie to A&E. Maggie is brought to A&E and a tracheotomy is performed on her in resus.
Tony has a heart attack when the pressure gets to him.
One driver, Martin Shaw, is brought into A&E with serious lacerations and a basal skull fracture. His wife Selena Shaw is having a scan for her pregnancy, when she receives the news about the pileup and Martin's condition. Selena goes to A&E and realises Martin is dying, before telling him about the unborn baby he never knew. Martin dies shortly afterwards, as people are still fighting for their lives on track. Dixie and Jeff are unconscious but petrol is leaking from the ambulance and threatening to set alight.
Will they survive?
