As Rihanna signed a 6 album deal with Def Jam in 2004 and now she's onto album 6 (she really should have re-released Loud and then it could be good enough to win album of the year at the grammys). anyone else think she'll switch labels? Just a thought that came to me last night. Shes not in the highest earners on forbes, so def jam are clearly ripping her off (she'll be loaded but not like Gaga or adele - I know they write too but Janet Jackson re-negotiated her deal in the 90s for millions, even though she didnt write a lot on control, more on rhythm nation but you know what I mean). They've been good to her, but a renegotiation, if she hasnt already (I'm sure it'd have been published - news wise) would be to her benefit as the contract is at its end.

I personally don't want her to move labels. Def Jam is great. If this was happening in 2007, I would've told her to move to Interscope. But now Interscope is AWFUL. A terrible label, and they'll force Rihanna to do nothing but electropop songs, and they won't promote anything else she does.

So I'd really hope she stays at Def Jam. Def Jam has by far the most talented aritsts at the moment (although Rihanna is probably the least talented person on the label lol). Maybe she could re-negotiate though. I'm not really fussed how much she gets paid tbh. As you said, Rihanna doesn't have many writing credits, so she won't get as much money as Adele and all the rappers.

I think her label are doing an amazing job with her. She's constantly in charts and is selling out arenas. I reckon after this album even if she doesn't take a break she'll resign with def jam but get a much much bigger cut of the profits.

I don't think IDJ are ripping her off. She simply does not have all the endorsements/investments that people like Beyonce has and she is not selling nearly as many concert tickets as people like Gaga. All her income comes from her record sales and what few endorsements she has. I'm not sure what role LA Ried played in her career, but she is top dog at IDJ and they seem to spend all their money promoting her at the expense of other artists on her label. Should that continue now that L.A Ried has gone I think she should stay, where else is she going to get that kind of treatment from.

Again, if you think Def Jam is bad for that, you should see what it's like on other labels, such as Interscope...

I can understand with Rihanna, because she's one of their most popular artists at the moment, so it makes sense to spend so much money on her.

But Interscope, they get artists out of NOWHERE, and spend BILLIONS on them, and all their veteran artists, who made the label a lot of money before, get completely ignored.

50 Cent in 2003, Pussycat dolls in 2005, Timbaland in 2007, Lady Gaga in 2009, LMFAO in 2011.

I know people won't want to believe it, but seriously, Lady Gaga and LMFAO will be getting ignored by Interscope 5 years down the line, and struggling to get hits, just like 50 Cent is now.

Awful label.

For me, Interscope has been awful since the early 00's mostly due to the way they completely ditched their urban/urban pop acts and focused on the rappers. So many artists got completely ignored and they didn't seem to care about their careers even though some of them had potential

However, Interscope, despite being undeniably below average, is still probably the best label around (apart from Epic, I can't think of any other decent label ).I'm having high hopes for the new form of RCA (old RCA, Jive and J merged into one label, I think). They have so many high profile acts that if they screw up with their methods, it's going to be a major industry trainwreck

Anyway, searching for a good label nowadays is pointless, there isn't any. They seem to think that if they rush albums, release less singles, make their artists work beyond their limits on tours and only promote in the release week, they'll get more income but they're obviously wrong. If they spent a little more time trying to see how they should launch the artist and what the fanbases want instead of just running to a radio station to get their generic material reviewed and approved then maybe the industry wouldn't be so one-dimensional

^ The original focus of Interscope was for hip hop and urban music, so they were completely right to focus on the rappers, and that's what they should focus on today. Spending millions on Natalia Kills, Lady Gaga, Party Rock Anthem, etc. absolutely disgusts me, when, truth be told, if it wasn't for Dr. Dre, the record label probably wouldn't exist today.

The future looks bright aswell, with a new electropop line-up for the Pussycat Dolls, 2NE1 and Girls Generation.

This is the same label that was supporting talented artists such as Snoop Dogg, 2Pac and Dr. Dre, back in the day.

So sad.

I'm not sure what she will do.
She is still good friends with Jay-Z so that could be a reason she stays, her music is good. But her album sales must be driving her mad!
She must want a number 1 album and I doesn't seem like she is getting it with the same promo and structures.

Well, they're just trying to conform, I guess (Girls Generation?Nothing against K-Pop, but these girls are just not talented ).But I still think it was totally wrong that they pushed all the r'n'b' acts aside and focused only on the rappers.Urban music includes both these genres, so it felt kind of weird when they stopped giving opportunities to r'n'b' acts

they'll try and keep her because she's one of the biggest artists right now at the moment.
