Who had the greatest comeba ck? And who is destined for one?
Simply put who had the greatest comeback in music history and who is destined for one? I think for me it would be Mariah Carey who everyone had written out but then she came back much bigger than ever, Jennifer Lopez is also another contender. I think Leona will have a huge comeback and Mariah will have her third comeback sometime soon.

Take That's was pretty big, i'm not a fan though.
I think Mariah needs a good comeback, but judging by the sounds of it, Christina Aguilera's could be impressive too! |

Well, Britney with 'Circus', Mariah with 'TEOM' and Madonna with 'COAD' all had pretty huge comebacks.Jennifer Lopez's return was pretty good too despite 'Papi' being an utter flop and the album's mediocre worldwide sales.
The second part of the question is clearly hypothetical and in the current state of the industry, nothing is guaranteed, but, objectively (based on so far reactions, buzz, label methods, available platforms to promote), I believe Christina Aguilera is going to make quite the comeback in early 2012

Did Mariah really have a comeback as such? She had another huge album and another hit from the following album in the last decade, but it was more of a re-think that happened to be successful for a while rather than a ''comeback''.
Christina Aguilera hasn't happened yet, so I won't put that down here. A little premature, I think. I don't think Madonna's ever had a ''comeback'' either, just less successful periods that she later reversed. Britney was never out of the spotlight and still achieved success with Blackout, so I don't count her as a real ''comeback'' either. I think the Queen of comebacks and re-invention is Cher. From the folky soft rock of Sonny & Cher, to those Half-Breed/Gypsies and Thieves days, to the ''Rock'' power ballads, to Believe, she has managed to somehow remain relevent for nearly 50 years now. |

Kylie's comeback is possibly the best ever and most famous ever.
She was almost right down the dumper of pop* and a pair of gold hotpants changed it all. *copyright Smash Hits. |

Take That is the obvious one.
Kylie was in flopsville before Spinning Around Christina Aguilera will return to form next year. Girls Aloud have the potential to top the lot (hoping! )

Kylie with "Light Years" and then really hitting it big again with "Fever".
Fleetwood Mac's comeback with "The Dance" was a big hit. Cher has also had a fair few big comebacks but the biggest was "Believe" in 1998. |

Was about to post Ray Of Light which has been billed as THE comback....but essentially it wasnt...she was and has always been there really....like some say her next album will be a "comeback" because of 4 years between her last album and her next one....but she hasnt been away or had an unsuccessful/flop period ever tbh if you look at the whole picture.
I would agree with Cher that Believe was a saviour after a string of flop albums and low sales periods....to then one of the biggest dance songs of all time selling millions of millions and not to mention the album sales too....and the first of her zillion successful Farewell tours haha! Mariah maybe....Emancipation again is billed as a "comeback" album....it was more of a return of commercial sales....but she never was away from the scene really. Britney with Circus was a kinda comeback but then again....every album she releases will be "Britney has comeback musically etc" whatever lol. Christina Aguilera is being tipped for a comeback next year...sure Bionic flopped but shes not out of public eye is she....if she has a string of Bionics (god help her) commercially, then she will need a comeback of sorts. |

Kylie Minogue- Had a highly regarded 4 nights show no money nothing to create costumes etc in London then released spinning around= the Kylie we know and love today
Madonna- ray of light NME summed it up well she hadn't gone away or flopped she had the backlash of Erotica but sort of reclaimed it sales wise with Bedtime Stories but after all was just another R&B album and then some critical acclaim with Evita but her relevancy and excitement had gone this was Madonna ushering in a new sound and complete new direction and proving that she still lead not followed and was as provocative and exciting as ever. Britney- Circus after a lackluster year and sales before a highly panned appearance at MTV EMA's then a shower of awards some great medical treatment and rest and britney was back Kate Bush- Aerial 12 years away and still managed to set the world of music alight |

What are we classing as a "comeback"? There have been acts who have returned with a big album, then flopped subsequently (Mariah), and acts who have returned with the odd massive single every now and then (Cher, recently J Lo), then acts who have a career resurgence for a prolonged period of time (Kylie, Take That) and acts who just have some big albums intertwined with not-so-big albums (Madonna)...
I wouldn't say Britney's Circus is a contender. Her personal life was up shit creek, but Blackout was still highly regarded and had hits. She was on the mend circa Circus, but it wasn't an era wrapped up in a bow. If it had been, Femme Fatale wouldn't have also been effectively labeled her "proper comeback". Again, falling short of the "wow" return people expect with a comeback, however unrealistic. She's progressing and getting better each time, but there's not been a singular moment of instant return to form that I'd say is a requirement for a comeback. In terms of who is destined for a comeback, I'd love Christina to. I have a feeling she'll be a progressive return-to-form though, as opposed to a flashy instantaneous "comeback". The process began with The Voice, then Moves Like Jagger, I think a solid album with some big/reasonable hits will follow then perhaps her next album will officially reaffirm herself. Cher will maybe pull yet another big single out of her ass in yet another decade. |

Agree with Take That from a UK / Europe point of view but worlwide it would have to be Aerosmith in 1987 when they released Permanent Vacation.

There's no need to think about this for me...Def Take That...Nothing comes close...You have their huge success in the 90's...The breakup....The public ridicule...Robbie bitterness....and then Nothing for years except for Robbie's constant jibes.
Then out of nowhere...The 4 guys decide to promote their greatest hits...Then talk of a few shows...Then more shows which sell out...Then a new album...Multi platinum sales...Sell out arena tour...Number 1's....Another multi platinum album...4 night sellout at Wembley...More number 1's...Original lineup reunite...Another Multi platinum album and more hits...Brits...Ivor's...various awards...British songwriter for Gary....8 night sellout at Wembley alongside another sell out stadium tour. I mean we have Kylie/Britney/Xtina/Mariah/J Lo...But to compare them to Take That's comeback ...There's no comparison....Just TT story alone is amazing, and most of these artists can only dream of having this kind of success in their home country. Also, a lot of these artists have come back to around the same success or a little more than they had to begin with, and most of them were on an extended break music wise...So never really left the scene, except for maybe Kylie. TT were done...Over..no hope of a comeback, and the biggest shock is that none of us expected this....Nobody could see how successful they would become...They're bigger now than the first time....They also have a respect/credibility that they never had the first time around. They've become something more...The other artists haven't...So yeah, Take That's Def. Kylie would be second |

Personally i'd say Kylie. Spinning Around and Light Years totally reinvented her and brought Pop Kylie back. The lyrics to Spinning Around are brilliant too - It has to be one of the best 'comeback' songs there is.

From the folky soft rock of Sonny & Cher, to those Half-Breed/Gypsies and Thieves days, to the ''Rock'' power ballads, to Believe, she has managed to somehow remain relevent for nearly 50 years now. I think there is some confusion as to what a genuine comeback actually is. It is no t having some poorly performing album, then bouncing back with a huge hit-ie Mariah. A comeback is usually referred when an act comes out of retirement, re-forms ie groups, has had years and years in the wilderness, (ie commercial flops) or has just fallen out of the public eye (and music business spotlight) for a long period of time as well. One of the most spectacular comebacks of all times was Tina Turner. Star is the 60s, into obscurity for most of the time in the 1970s, hooks up with Heaven 17 who produce a couple of tracks with her which results in a mega selling album, record breaking attendance concerts (250k at one in Brazil), Garmmys and global super star status. Other examples now are Kylie and Take That-arguably bigger the second time around, Cher as has been mentioned and I think Elvis has a comeback as well? |

So 'comeback' referred to her album receiving the best critical response in years, the best sales in years as well as her wellbeing back on top |

Take That's comeback was only because of Robbie! It didn't reflect the actual album. Their singles flopped.

Take That had already made a massive comeback with "Beautiful World" in 2006 and continued it with "The Circus" in 2008. Robbie only came crawling back for "Progress" after his solo career had stalled and he needed the boost. Apparently a lot of the fans weren't bothered about having him back and the band really should have told him where to go. I can't believe they even gave the guy a solo section on their last tour. My sister is a huge Take That fan and even she felt the four of them were perfect without him. |
