The time has come to renew my mum's TV set up.

At present she has a newish Panasonic HD TV, which will stay and a slew of ancillary equipment - which is what needs to go. It comprises a VCR (no longer needed), freeview PVR that is starting to cause problems (probably due to the disk getting to the end of its life) and a DVD player - all separate pieces of kit, with a mess of wires, SCARTs, power, a TV amplifier/splitter and maybe even a lost tribe or two.

What we'd like to do is toss the lot (except the TV) and replace it with a combination freesat (not freeview), DVD player, PVR dual-tuner system. Preferably one that will play nice with her viera Panny TV. Oh yes, an internet connection with iPlayer is a must-have, too.

Note that we're planning on swapping from a terrestrial TV reception to a satellite receiver. This is a conscious choice and one of the fixed / must-haves of the new system.

So far as recording stuff goes, there's no need for a DVD/Bluray recorder (just playback). Also whenever the choice comes up, simplicity wins over features.

So far we've been considering devices like the LG600 or the DMR-BS850EBK but nothing we've seen so far really stands out as being "the one"
What would you suggest?

As you do not want recording to DVD, get a Freesat PVR with a separate Blu-Ray player that has iPlayer facilities. The Freesat HD version of iPlayer is only SD quality tho perfectly watchable. Other systems using software apps can access the HD version of iPlayer.

If you get the Humax Foxsat HDR, the remote control can be configured to work both the television and disc player.

PS connect up using HDMI, they are a lot neater than SCART and essential for HD.

Ultimately the decision will be more about ease of use that techy-style features.
