“What makes Will a PI survivor?”

The fact that he is hugely talented might be a good reason!

As for Joss Stone, she did enter and win a talent show. "Search for a Star" I think it was called. BBC1 Saturday evenings, Jane MacDonald hosting the show. Anyone remember?

It amazes me that this fact is never brought up when JS is mentioned. Will has had the stigma of being a "Pop Idol winner" to fight against. I am glad to say he winning that particular battle.

I still don't understand why Pop Idol, Popstars etc are called "reality shows". They are nothing like reality shows. The only similarity is the fact that someone is voted off each week.

At least in these shows they have to prove themselves by singing live week after week. mess up and the public will boot you out (Poor Rosie).

The 'talentless' jibe aimed at them, mostly by people who dont watch the shows just goes to show that sometimes it is a stigma to do well or appear in them. The winners have to doubly prove themselves and shake off the tag.

Most new acts are not expected to have number one with their first single/album, they build up to it if they are any good. Reality show winners find themselves in a position of having to live up to the sales of their first single/albums, where anything less is considered a 'flop'.

Yes, it is a stigma, , but it shouldnt be, I do think reality tv shows have found some good acts.

I didn't know that about JS! How interesting! Thanks

Will Young has become a star in his own right, he no longer has to survive in the music biz off the back of the programme he appeared in. That's what makes him a success. Same with Liberty X, they might not be the best group ever, but they've made a success of themselves and they no longer have to use the fame of the programme to support them.

Didn't someone say that Steve Brookstein appeared on that and won it, or was it the one with Jonathan Ross?

I think there was more than one series. Perhaps they won one each.

Joss Stone did appear on that sickly Jane Mac thingy...but this was when she was 14 if memory serves.
It was seeing her on this that prompted the American producer to investigate further, and he sure struck gold putting her with his team.
I honestly believe that JS has got the once in a lifetime voice, that elusive white girl black voice that producers have been chasing way back since the "hillbilly cat"(Elvis to you and me. )first burst out of East Tupelo...shakin' those hips.
I think it was Sam Phillips who first said "find me a white all American boy, with a black delta blues voice and I'll find you a phenomenon."
Janis had it,Elvis had it,and IMO Devon's finest has too. she's still our only genuine big seller to break the US market, and she's still wonderfully naive and guache with it.
The US record buying public are really lapping up both her albums...I couldn't be happier for her.

So you're rather partial to her, are you PIV?

Joss Stone has got a very good voice but she sounds like a white girl singing soul to me. PIV i am not sure if you think that Joss sounds black or not because i have read another thread in the music forum many months ago and you didn't think that she *really* did either.
There have been other white artists who i have thought were black initally but not many maybe one or two, i can usually tell in the voice.
