I have a Iphone4 and i am due an upgrade in January .

Samsung seem to update a lot quicker than Apple phones so just wondering is there any kind of release date for this phone in the next few months ?

It seems silly to upgrade to Iphone4s as its not much different than a Iphone4 so im not sure if how long i should wait till i upgrade.

Upgrade now....SGS2 will get ice cream sandwich in a couple of months. SGS3 is only a guessing game at the moment, but I doubt it'll be within 6 months.

The World Mobile Congress in Barcelona from February 27th to March 1st will probabaly the time that the Galaxy S3 is announced. I wouldnt expect it to be released until summer time.
Most other major phones will also be announced at this Congress.

I would go for the 4S personally, but if you want a Samsung get it. Dont bother waiting 6 months.

S2 is top of its game right now but has been out nearly 9 months. Those that actually use the Galaxy Nexus rate it higher than S2, but I'm not entirely convinced.

I'd put S3 being out in the new year. within 6 months maybe.

No shortage of rumours, though that was also the case with the iphone 5.

says:

“ J.K. Shin, president of Samsung’s mobile communications division has confirmed the release of the next generation of the Galaxy smartphone will follow-up sometime in 2012”

this fansite reckons

“The Galaxy S3 is expected to launch in the first half of 2012.”

and more reliably, CNET says:

“Its next flagship device, which pretty much everyone expects to be launched at February's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, will be the Galaxy S3.”

I have just got the SG S2 after debating on the Iphone 4S
The SG S2 is much better phone, more powerfull does everthing the Iphone 4S does and a whole lot more. Much better display. & its Android. Iphones are old hat. they led the way for some time, but Samsung now have the top slot.. All around a dam good phone. You will also find that the Tariff on the Samsung is a lot cheaper, why pay £10 + extra for the Iphone

That is one thing I don't like about a new iPhone contract if I do upgrade to a 4s is that at the moment I pay £30 a month for 100 mins and unlimited texts . The cheaper contact for the iPhone is now I think £36 a month . Which is a lot for what you get.

I initially had an iP4 but after 6 months of frustration with the way it restricts you on just about anything you want to do I ditched for the SG2S. I've never looked back! You can throw anything you like at it and it will happily speed along.

Go for the SG2S.

My concern is that most contacts are 18 months so i could end up with a phone that's outdated within 4 months.

I suppose the S3 would end up being like a Nexus but using a plus type screen,
But when you consider 15" OLED TV's retail at £1500 it might be a bit too cost prohibitive to produce at the moment.

Much Samsung stuff uses far cheaper LCDs for this very reason.

That will happen with EVERY phone, there is always something better right around the corner.....why does it matter ? Unless you feel the need to feel superior to others because of what phone you have?

Because the top phones tend to only upgrade once a year so if I am paying top price then I don't want a outdated phone for 14 months.

I may as well wait a few months and upgrade if a new phone is not that far off.

Having owned the S2 and now the Galaxy Nexus I'd say go for the Nexus, much better screen, quicker, longer battery with stock than the S2 with custom ROMs, quicker OS updates (already on ICS, no waiting!) plus NFC

It may have 720p definition, but it isn't as bright or colourful as it is only SuperAMOLED [in comparison to SueperAMOLED Plus on the SGS2].

Yet still brighter than most other phones. Size matters to it's buyers.

Yep. I switched to an £8 a month for 300 mins, 1000 text and 500MB contract. No 'free phone' of course.

Nah nah na nah nah! my screen's better than your screen!!!! Does it really matter? They are so close that, for the vast majority of people, it's irrelevant.
Some individuals get a bit too territorial over their bit of tech....

It looks like Sony pulled out the big bucks to get the Plus into the new Playstation Vita.
"Overall the Samsung-built 5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display looks like a winner. The 960×544 pixel format is weird; it should have been 960×540."

There are leaked photos of the S3 here (looks good if they are genuine):
