I was looking at some of the Jelly Bean Factory ones in a shop today and the prices were well into arm-and-a-leg territory, and Jelly Bellys are no better from what I remember.

I look on them as the confectionery equivalent of lobsters, namely very nice but not worth the expense involved.

Lots of different flavours means lots of different natural flavourings I would have thought.

Yeah, very pricey. Delicious, though. Oh, except for the cinnamon (I think it's cinnamon, possibly aniseed) ones which taste foul. Even though I like both cinnamon and aniseed. *Shrugs*

Considering the amount of different flavourings they can't be cheap to make, yeah they'll whack on a premium profit margin too but both contribute to the price

It's nothing to do with "how hard" they are to make. Natural flavouring (which I think they use) is expensive and the shear number of flavourings used will bump the price up. A factory producing, say, only blueberry jellybeans will be able to utilise economies of scale much better than a factory producing 10 different flavours. Truffle mash isn't hard to make...bloody expensive to, mind.

How Jelly Beans are made.

When you consider how long it takes just to make a few different colours/flavours, then its no wonder some are more expensive when they have far more flavours/colours, especially creating the ones with a marbled effect coating.

Fascinating video. I can see how the added complexity could bump up the price.

And it occurs to me, what is the plural of Jelly Belly? Is it Jelly Bellies as in pork bellies or Jelly Bellys as in the two Germanys?

The former, surely?
