some books I buy I love and treasure....and others end up on the book shelf cos im not quite sure what to do with them...I cant somehow throw books out.....but they take up a lot of room en masse......

Your summary of what its like to be a Leo...is exactly the same as mine.......bits of the supposed characteristics fit me perfectly.....whilst others are totally out....

To bring a cultural note to the proceedings....

went to the Freud exhibition yesterday.....and what an odd painter he was.....

technically absolutely amazing, some of his portraits were brilliant, but although some of his paintings are real gems.....there was also in my opinion an awful lot of dross...

For someone who was the grandson of the famous Sigmund Freud...im amazed he had such a disfunctional life.....and lived in such an unusual way......And his work seemed as if he was so arogant somehow.... as if he felt he was better than everyone else....so he would paint a nude in an impossibly complicated pose....just so he could show everyone how clever he was.....

I just ended up feeling pretty numb...not happy or sad or outraged by his work....just numb.....most of it seemed pretty meaningless and I couldnt understand remotely what the point of it was........

but maybe that was just me....?

Could you rent him out for a couple of hours

It would be nice and tidy living with John James - I would just leave him to it - return when it was all colour coded etc

Morning all.

Happy belated birthday lizznhayley. . .

I am absolutely exhausted! Getting too old for going out and about four days a week.

I have about 2000 books. I look at them as friends really -sad isn't it. I've always been a voracious reader. My tastes have changed though and I don't read an awful lot of fiction. Biography, history, poetry. I have re-read some of the books from my youth - Ethan Frome, Johnny Tremain and The Scarlet Letter. TV is so uninspiring these days that I spend more time reading.

No news from John I see - going back to bed with the Sunday papers. . . see you all later.

Well, what a review Very honest of you, augusta, considering how highly Freud is regarded by the cognoscenti You make me want to see the exhibition and decide for myself - I'm off to look at the website now.....

Having seen the Freud exhibition, I'd love your opinion. I thought the nudes were very brutal. Was very glad I saw the TV program beforehand. There was one portrait - of a friend of his I think - and the man's head was enormous in comparison to his body and he didn't get the shoulders or foreshortening right.

Georgy - we live in a cul de sac and two of may neighbours and us are having a barbecue - each house is inviting a dozen people and we are sharing doing the meat, salads and pudding. We are borrowing garden furniture and garden chairs. We will have one big table (wallpaper tables) in the drive. We have already bought small union jacks and plain paper tablecloths and napkins. My o/h has also rigged up a system so we can have some music outside (not too loud). Other neighbours going to France to buy some bubbly - almost organized. Does this help?

As I recall, the Queen disliked it the most of all the portraits of her, but then she did like Rolf Harris's best. Don't think people like portraits that show all their wrinkles and bumps.

Have now booked to go to the Freud in mid May - well, I have to spread my gallivanting out a bit Also, am in London anyway that day

Re the jubilee: we live in a close with several small 'sub-closes' and there is someone who likes organising us ....so I'll go with the flow. We did the 'Big Lunch' last year and it was a bit as nyannie describes. I took a kind of champagne raspberry jelly as my contribution Your 'do' sounds fabulous, nyannie, I like the idea of something more personal, yet inclusive

One thing I was thinking...partly with reference to the Bletchley Park book.....partly to do with the news...and partly to do with JJJ past history.....etc

Is how dependent we are, on the information we are told.....I am probably like most people, inasmuch as I usually take a lot of things on face value... And then if I have bits of information then its a case of joining up the dots with something that makes sense..... But sometimes im sure I take 2 and 2 and make a totally random and unconnected total, that isnt actually true...

So if I was told Bletchley park was doing something for the war effort....but not what.....id accept that at face value and not worry about it too much......

I was just thinking of the whole JJJ story and how much we as fans and supporters have been manipulated by.....the way facts have been presented to the media, and what has been said, and what hasnt been said.....

it just made me wonder again how much of the real story we actually know., and how much if anything we dont still know.... Or whether the story has been changed by time and circumstances.....

I can't imagine you, of all people, taking anything at face value. You are always questioning everything. I'm much more that sort of person who takes things at face value and then gets angry when I've been misled.
I doubt whether we'll ever know the real story behind JJJ. For all we know it might have all been a huge con. After all, there have been plenty of those around in the celebrity world. But does it really matter any more? Until fairly recently I would have still been angry if that had been found to be the case, but now I couldn't care less.

Re: events in the news, you only sometimes find out interesting information about them years later when papers are released, but even then they've been doctored. So we never get to hear the whole truth, ever, I reckon.

You're right, we really don't know that much at all. We still often see posts starting 'in the House' well that was a tv show, they were locked away with a small number of people, it wasn't reality and they way they behaved and acted in there may not be what they are at all like in reality - it's a certain circumstance with a certain group of people. It was also 2 years ago, people grow and change.

Who is to know what's fact and what isn't. Was the 'leak' or 'rumour' about 2 bedrooms true or false, who knows. We don't know much about anything really, especially when things are so contradictory.
