My other thread made me think of something else - character assassination has been big in all the soaps this year, what with Kat, Alfie, Max, Tanya, Ben, Christian, Syed, Ronnie in Eastenders and the two latest examples, Marlon and Laurel in Emmerdale. Sian and Sophie have been ruined in Corrie. Steve and Becky have been ruined. Who has been ruined for you, past or present?

I don't agree with Emmerdale's Marlon but Laurel definitely has been ruined and possibly Ashley too for me.
I've never liked Tanya, Ben, Max or Ronnie to notice if they were ruined but I agree with Kalfie, and Chryed's storyline (as an individual character, Syed mostly because he barely even is a character now - he's just Zainab and Masood's gay son, Christian's boyfriend and the father of Amira's baby). Phil has also been ruined for me because he's just getting pathetic and Roxy is becoming a worse person all the time and much less tolerable and I think possibly Peggy too.

They ruined Gilly in HO, he started off so lovely and happy go lucky and he left as a rapist!

I agree about Gilly in HO - a drastic character change for the worse.

Yusef - I don't think the domestic abuse storyline was right for him. It makes no sense with his closeness to Afia and the fact that there is no indication he was ever abusive to Zainab before or to Afia's mum for that matter. I didn't mind him being slightly controlling, manipulative, even a bit distorted but I didn't like them taking him down the abuse route just in a bid to split him and Zainab up and put her back with Masood.

Not much bothered about people like Phil either way and I don't think Zainab has been ruined as such.

Nobody has said Aaron yet, why not he was fabulous 18 months ago and is now a charcacture of an angry gay young man. Also Amy has ruined Val in the last few weeks.

Kat and Alfie - Eastenders.

Deirdre and Steve: their changed behaviour because of Tracy the murderer; Peter Barlow committing adultery - he should have stayed with wife and son building an ongoing family unit - Coronation Street.

Kalfie could be redeemed. They need a big talk about everything that doesn't end in argument!

One big two hander when they talk everything through (they've pratically done one before) and then get them back to how they were.

Eastenders have a habit of ruining returning characters. They always think people want to see them as they were, rather than with character progression. Take Bianca, when she was coming to the end of her first stint in Eastenders she had her own stall, she had sorted herself out and had made the decision not to be like her own mum. Her losing her first child was a real turning point for the character, i felt when they brought her back, they just tried to re create Carol, they wanted Bianca to be a carbon copy of her mum, they essentially made her everything she had grown out of. Kids by different dads, a short temper, living rough all the things that when she left she had grown out of, and you were led to believe she could go an achieve something.

Kat and Alfie were similar, they went off in to the sun set, Kat had long changed her image, she was an attractive girl, she was no longer brassy (she still had some of it) but they decided when she came back, she needed to be all legs and boobs, which didn't match the progression she had been given on her first stint. In truth them two should never have been brought back, but i would be tempted to split them for good now.

Emmerdale i thought got it spot on with Cain. He came back having changed a hell of a lot, he was rough around the edges before, he resembled Eli Dingle, and he was a petty crook, when he came back with money he had changed, was smart, drove a nice car and carried himself quite well. They have carried that through, whilst he still has elements of his old self, there is real progression from his first stint to now
