Just my opinion, of course. But the character of Shirley seems to have really run her course. All she does these days is one of two things - scowl and threaten other characters, or bite her bottom lip and attempt to be happy. Every storyline seems to be the same - fall out with a character, shout a bit, make up with them. With Heather departing, there's even less reason for her to be around, and I can't bear the Phil and Shirley combination - no love, no natural affection.

Linda Henry is a cracking actress and seems like a lovely person, and I can't help but feel she should move on to new things.

How did she show she was complex and interesting?

She argued with Roxy, smiled and made up.
She argued with Heather, smiled and made up.
She argued with Ben.
She shouted at Denise.

Zzz.

she was still sulking after it. she told him she didnt want any presents and as usual blokes don't get it. he originally didn't want anyone else there it was only going to be "about family"

she didnt argue with them though. she was subtle and showed emotion even when she was trying to act tough. in the scene when denise confronted phil you could see there was something in her reaction.

when she was talking to ben she said something about "Phil not showing affection towards ben" that wasn't about her and phil as they have a different relationship to phil and ben

the roxy scene was just for a laugh

Maybe we just see things differently - I do get the impression with you that they could show Shirley curling out a shite on a glass table for 28 minutes and you'd still sing the praises of the episode, so let's agree to disagree and be done!

there's no way they would give her that many scenes if it was just the same old same old. she showed depth and emotion. she had more scenes than phil that hardly ever happens

Ahh you've met the FM before then
Phil and Shirley, it's a romance on par with Romeo and Juliet, one that will resonate down the ages of TV history, spoken of in reverential terms, etc, etc.

are you being sarcastic ?

i dont know what its supposed to be. its very complex. if phil was really using her half the stuff in the past few months would never have happened. he would've simply had an affair with rainie and tried to convince shirley to stay which people expected from them

I hate Shirley and it's because she's with Phil which is a shame because I used to like her character beforehand. I just think they're both above their station really, can't stick the whole 'you don't know who you're messing with' rubbish. It's arrogance to the highest degree and I think they're vile together.

She'll have to do one or the other if Sharon comes back.

To be honest, I would say that nearly all the EE characters need to change or leave right now. So the majority need to change now and some need to leave. I personally wish Phil was leaving so if he left, Shirley going with him would be a possibility. I'd prefer he left and she could stay to try and be her own character again... but there wouldn't be much left for her without Phil or Heather.

Yes, I really agree with this and I hope if Linda Henry sticks around this is what will happen.

Shirley is a tedious old cow, Phil is a clapped-out old banger, and the pair of them are about as interesting as a pile of old, festering cabbage leaves. Although that is probably unfair to old, festering cabbage leaves, since they still probably have more chemistry than has ever existed in the Phil / Shirley relationship. My wish to the New Year fairy is that both characters should die dramatically and horribly, and then they should never be spoken of again. Pleeeeeaaaasssse???

We need to have Deano and or Carly return. Or her sister. I think EE needs her as she's a good actress and a good character

Yes - the mean spiteful tart who ends up being the tart with a heart we come to love. Might take a few years though - and she needs bigger earrings and a Frank!
