The Who Appreciation Thread

I'm surprised these guys don't have an appreciation thread on here! Probably my second favourite band from the 60s after The Beatles.

My favourite song by them:

Love the Who. 2nd only to the Beatles. Went to see them at the NEC in 2000, when Entwhistle was still with us. Zak Starkey on drums......Amazing! Best gig I have ever been to.

Favourite song for me is "Wont get fooled again", followed by "Who are you".

Dropped hints to the other half about the Quadrophenia deluxe set for xmas, but didnt get it Any one out there got it? Is it worth getting?

About time these guys were recognised! And shocking that they never had a chart topper.

Love 'Won't Get Fooled Again', 'Substitute', 'I Can't Explain' and The Kids Are Alright'.

I mainly love their mid-sixties mod stuff, particularly "Legal Matter", "The Kids Are All Right", My Generation", "I Can't Explain" and "Substitute.

Not as keen on their late-sixties and seventies recordings, although having said that, my all time favourite Who track is from 1971, the utterly unique and utter brilliant "Baba O'Riley".

Love The Who.
Hard to decide but if I had to pick a favourite song of theirs personally I'd pick Pinball Wizard , great tune

I was about to create an appreciation thread as I couldn't find one!

I found The Who on my own at 14 (my parents were quite shocked!). I've been streaming their music for years but I finally got round to buying an album today. I bought Greatest Hits and More (double disc, the second is a live one!).

We play their music a lot at hospital radio. Substitute, Baba O'Riley, Pinball Wizard, My Generation, I Can See For Miles and Squeeze Box are some of my personal favourites.

Amazing band. I bought Who's Next when it was released, and have never heard better. Been hooked ever since.

Was lucky enough to see them a couple of times in the 70s when they were arguably the best live band ever.

I've seen them a few times since, and always loved them, but thought they needed to do something a bit different to liven things up. They then toured Quadrophenia, and it was probably the best Who show I've seen. Absolutely stunning, and probably only bettered by Roger Waters last night doing The Wall.

Keith Moon was just nominated as 'the most iconic drummer of all time' on a local radio show that does chart lists. It played 'I Can See For Miles' as an example, and you can hear why... there aren't many drummers who force themselves to the forefront of the band, both by the excitement of their playing and their personality.

'Won't Get Fooled Again' and 'Sparks' are 2 more examples of how fantastic Moon the Loon was. Him and Karen Carpenter are the two musical figures from the past I wish I could go back in time to save...

What would Keith Moon be like today? I imagine he would be a kind of national treasure, a bit like John Lydon, mellowed to the point of doing reality tv shows and such like, but still no-one quite sure what he was going to do next, yet somehow him getting away with it because we all love 'im!

But musically, how fantastic he would have been at Live Aid, for example... yes the Who were a great feature, but with Moon in the line-up, they'd have stolen the show totally, I am sure.

More great Who records, maybe more songs would have been written specifically to show off his talents. One of the greats, as they all are, obviously, but it's not often that the drummer truly is on the same level as the other band members in terms of greatness.
