how many times has EE's Ian Beale, the Scrooge of Walford, been some sort of saviour?
After all, despite mistreating certain people he has employed (examples including Sam and Billy Mitchell, and Bianca who is the daughter of a man Cindy Beale slept with later on), and IIRC refusing to give aunty Pauline a much-needed loan when uncle Arthur was still alive...there have been times in the past 10 years (in other words, after the Beale Empire collapsed, partly thanks to Fat Phil) that 'the most hated man in Walford' has shown considerable kindess. More kindness that Ian has given to any of his wives or even his children.
Need examples of how he has been a 'saviour' to someone? If it weren't for Ian, then in late 2003, Alfie Moon would not have been able to get past the psychotic heavies working for Andy Hunter, so that Alfie could steal Kat Slater away from Andy, who just wanted a trophy wife (and has been rotting in Hell since early 2005). Plus, when Alfie and Kat got married in the Vic, Ian gave Alfie a discount for the catering! ![]() A year later, when Dirty Den Watts ousted the Moon family (including Nana) from The Queen Vic on Christmas Eve, not only (on Christmas Day) did Ian reluctantly allow his house to be used for an impromptu gathering for those in Walford who had been promised lunch in the Vic before the soon-to-be-rotting-in-Hell-too Dirty Den cancelled it ( )...but thanks to persuasion from Jane Collins (fourth-wife-to-be!), Ian let the Moons move into the flat behind the chippy! (Although the Moons did nearly end up homeless again, two days later, after Ian caught Alfie nicking spuds to make dinner with. And IIRC, in 2006, when Sonia Fowler (nee Jackson) got divorced from Ian's younger cousin Martin and ditched by girlfriend Naomi Julien, didn't Ian and Jane (now living together, twins and Bobby included, a year before marrying) put a roof over Sonia's head, until she got back together with Martin? Ian Forever (plus Billy, Sam...and Alfie)...FAT PHIL NEVER! |

Look, if it weren't for Ian Beale, then Christmas in Walford would have been cancelled, end of. He helped SAVE Christmas!!
And how else would Alfie have saved Kat from marrying Andy, and found a new home for himself, Nana and Spencer after Dirty Den threw them all out on Christmas Eve? An act that appalled not just the other residents of Walford (especially Dot), but also Sharon, Vicki and the within-a-year-rotting-in-prison Chrissie. |

Name one instance in which Fat Phil has been a good samaritan or life-saver of any sort?
As for Andy Hunter...he employed Pat Evans from 2004 onwards, and in 2005 left her his house - formerly the Mitchell house. Exceptionally kind of a nasty piece of work like him, after Pat got conned out of her life savings by Wilfred Atkins, who nearly married Nana Moon. |

I agree with your posts, adam_fransella. Ian might not be perfect, but he has a good heart in the end. He's just a bit tight with money. Can't say the same for Sir Philth the VII. The only person he has ever been a saviour to is himself.

When Ethel died in 2000 she didnt have a penny to her name, Ian (despite being on the brink of bankruptcy) paid for a massive funeral for her with all the trimmings. He explained to Laura that Ethel had been like a grandmother to him and he would always go to hers whenever his parents were rowing when he was a kid. That's a nice Ian moment for you OP

Didn't Phil ( with Grants help) help rescue 2 of Ian's kids when they had been abducted and taken abroad by Cindy, back in the day.

I like Ian. He is a good father to his children (at least better than most of them in walford) and a good business man. I don't understand why everyone dislikes him so much.

![]() ![]() So many people would have suffered, had Ian actually died after being shot by a hitman (hired by his first ex-wife, Cindy) in 1996! |

And when Jase Dyer was killed, all Ian could say was 'How am I gonna make back money from a now-empty flat that I bought?' (This during the credit crunch!) |

And he took Billy and Honey plus their kids off the streets and into the Vic, after they were made homeless (and Billy robbed a charity bucket!). Although Phil himself made them homeless, after he sold their flat to Mrs Patel, who evicted Billy and co. |
