Exactly. The planet is threatened on a fortnightly basis in Who.
I don't think the show needs the excuse of some people misinterpreting the end of a calendar as the end of the world.
The Mayans predicted 1000s of years ago that the world would end on the exact date: 21st December 2012, therefore the might Mayans are right!

I don't think we've ever had a (televised) Mayan adventure in Doctor Who though, have we? This would be a good excuse.

Aztecs and Mayans are only superficially similar. So not really the same thing at all. That's like saying that Romans and Ancient Greeks are basically the same thing. But that's not true at all.
