With UK retailers now offering the device and an official launch rumoured to be just weeks away will you be getting one ? Whilst the price looks good it seems a very limited deviced compared to other tablets out there, although there are ways to 'break out' from the Amazon skin on the OS. Will Amazon also be offering the UK market the version of Amazon Prime that the US has. Surely without this the device isnt that great compared to others that have now dropped there price. Personally (I'm looking for a 'cheap' tablet ) a reasonable price offering of Amazonm Prime (US style) could tempt me towards the Fire but without that, not so much.

I'm not convinced that backlit displays are really any good for prolonged bouts of reading, so no, I wouldn't buy one just for that (I already have a traditional Kindle).

I might be interested in buying one as a cheap tablet, particularly if it could be jail-broken, though to be honest I'm not entirely sold on the 7" form factor either.

Now if it came bundled with Amazon Prime I might be convinced....

To my mind, the fire will stand or fall on this very thing.

So when did Hong Kong become part of the UK?

1839 after the opium wars but I get your point...just went by the currency it was being sold in and made an assumption

They flew off the shelves in the US mainly because they were only $199. We always get a raw deal with UK prices...

edit: Or is the £199.95 not the UK price

No, won't be getting one

Nope. Got an e-ink Kindle. Much better on your eyes for reading, better to view outdoors, better battery life. Have perfectly small and portable laptop for watching movies, and smartphones for music and other stuff.

I'll hang back until I see what the general consensus is and whether the inevitable price drops make it a better buy than other Android tablets.

I want a tablet, but I'm still torn between getting a 7" or a 10". I won't use it when travelling, since I'm almost always driving and I use my netbook in hotels!

I'd go for a 10" one then if you are not going to be carrying it about it will be worth getting the extra screen space

From what I have read the Fire seems a very ordinary, dare I say lacking, but it's Prime that makes it all worthwhile, now if they bring that to the UK then good but will they, is the market here to support it. Should be interesting to find out the details when they get confirmed.

I'm not bothered about the Fire but would like the Kindle touch as it has a better battery and more memory than the current £89 model.

Not a Fire, I'm very happy with my Kindle and would like a pad but won't use Apple so I'll wait for a 10" high spec alternative. To be honest the Fire looks like a jack of all trades master of none option.

That's what I was thinking, too.

That would seem to rule out the Kindle Fire, then.

I'm in the market for a tablet, but given I have a smartphone with large screen I'm not sure I can justify a tablet smaller than 10"

I had been thinking of waiting for the Fire but the £169 Playbook was too tempting. I prefer the 7” form factor to the larger tablets as it is more portable.

The killer app for the Fire isgoing to be downloading and streaming video content from Amazon. If you arent interested in that then there seems little other reason to get the Fire.

No fire for me. I was going to, then I broke down and got the 3G keyboard, was gonna give that to my mum and buy the fire when it was out but I really don't think I could live with 8 hours vs the Keyboard's 2 months battery life. Also I am afraid i'll miss the glorious Eink screen. The few extra bells and whistles don't outweigh those two things for me sadly

I also have a Kindle Fire, amazing device. It's as thin as an ipad, has better web support (i.e. flash), dual core processor, and a very solid build e.g. gorilla glass, rubberised back etc.

Some people are selling the Kindle Fire on Gumtree e.g. http://www.gumtree.com/cgi-bin/list_...gdom&ubercat=1 from around £200 to £240, which is a decent price as by the time it does come to the U.K. it will be about this price.

No panic in that I would assume that the 1 million a week sales will subside post xmas for a late January release here.

I'm very interested in getting a Fire. I've never owned a tablet or reader but am writing a book for the Kindle (biggest market) and want to be able to include links within my work.

As far as I know (admittedly, not much on this subject), the Fire is where I'm leaning.

Am I missing anything?

Cheers all.

Sorry for the delayed reply.

Yes, I do like the Playbook. It's not perfect and it's not an iPad killer, but for £169 it's a great gadget for the price. As a media player it is very good and the browser is quite impressive. Hopefully the long awaited o/s update will fix some of the annoyances.

The lack of some well known apps is disappointing (esp DropBox!) so Android support cannot come soon enough and it would be nice to have some DNLA support so that the Playbook could be used to control or playback media from a home network.

The Playbook isn't going to replace my laptop for sofa surfing but it is going to mean that I get rid of my netbook which I use when travelling.

No, for reading books I have Kindle 3 Keyboard and I don't need a tablet. As for the next e-reader I might be tempted to go for Sony PRS-T1, root it and install Kindle app on it, thus covering so all e-book formats.
