Girlbands flopping

Over the past few years, a number of girlbands have tried and failed to be successful, we've had:

Parade
Girls Can't Catch
Wonderland

and now The Saturdays and Sugababes may be heading the same way

Soundgirl also look like they won't have much success, I just wondered if anyone can think of other girlbands in the past few years and also, why are girlbands flopping whilst average bands like The Wanted continue to be successful?

Mini Viva!! They were a catchy pair..

Wonderland were too dated and Girls Can't Catch just didn't "catch on" for some reason but they had some great tunes.

I wouldn't dismiss The Sugababes too soon, Heidi is on DOI soon, Amelle will be a guest feature on some new songs and the new album is supposed to be returning to the organic sounds of AWDF/TIMW.

As for the Sats they only have themselves to blame. Their debut was very refreshing for a girlband but they decided to follow the crowd with the club sounds and lost a lot of respect/their fanbase.

I was going to write Mini Viva but I couldn't remember their name!

I still hope Sugababes make a climb back but I don't hold out much hope.

I suppose Belle Amie could count as Girls Up flopped although they're apparently still planning on releasing an album soonish

i think most names mentioned were only destined to be one hit wonder releases....

however, sugababes are in decline and sadly so are the saturdays. Both have become disposable rather than edgy and fresh.

Mini Viva had SO much potential Such a waste.

The Saturdays should be bigger than they are right now and Sugababes well after the line up changes, people just don't take them seriously anymore.

Let's hope Little Mix and Stooshe can change things!

Think it's got more to do with style over substance, more eye candy than eye popping musical quality..

In all fairness, the Sugababes have had a great run over the last decade and released some genuinely great pop songs - Freak Like Me, Overload, Run for Cover, Hole in the Head, Ugly, etc. A lot of people wrote them off after their debut album but they stuck around. There is no reason why they couldn't be big again if they started to release some strong pop music again. Just going OT for second. I truly despise Keisha Buchanan. She has yet to prove herself as a solo artist so I really wish she wouldn't act so high and mighty about the Sugababes not doing as well as they used to.

I personally don't think most of the material from the new girlbands is very good. Girls Aloud and Sugababes really set the bar (well, their producers and writers did) in terms of pop music over the last 10 years. A lot of their music was also critically well received which is rare for pop girl bands. I guess boy bands and girl bands have always been in and out of fashion. There were no successful girl bands in the early to mid-'90s until the Spice Girls hit big in 1996. Before that it was boy bands like Boyzone and Take That that ruled the pop world. It just seems that maybe boy bands are the big thing at the moment and girlbands are becoming a little passé. True, Little Mix did win The X-Factor ,but their single is the lowest selling winner's single since 2004. I personally don't think they will have lasting success.

That's my take.

I think the low sales had little to do with Little Mix actually IMHO.
To be fair Cannonball is not a festive single. and it is certainly not what Little Mix would normally do. Matt got to release a single which suited him. Also over the years X-Factor singles have become less popular. There is definitely a gap in the market for them. They want to write and be involved with making their record. I am personally optimistic.

The sad thing is some of the girlbands that have failed over the past few years actually had some really good songs! There always seems to a problem with either image, personality or promotion/management. Girls Can't Catch, (especially) Mini Viva and Dolly Rockers were all good but their was something lacking in each of their cases. Parade, Wonderland and SoundGirl weren't as good (imo) but the same still applies to them.

The Saturdays are a confusing bunch. They - or the management, the label, whoever's behind them - are determined not to give up but the sales are shocking. I guess you could argue that they have problems with image, personality and their management but they're still sticking around and that's the main thing. Only two of the six bands I mentioned above actually got an album out. I can't help but wonder how much longer they will stick around though.
