Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Sony Tablet S?

Hi All,

I'm after an Android tablet and I think I've narrowed it down to either the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 or Sony Tablet S.

They've both got their plus and minus points for me but I just can't seem to decide which!!!

So I'm asking for advice from the great wealth of knowledge on DS, which should I go for?

Also, I can't get a definitive answer on this, can I set up my Android phone as a WiFi hotspot and then use the tablet on the internet?
Reading some forums it seems that Google are restricting this practice. I tried it on a demo Sony Tablet S in Currys today and it didn't seem to work, yet when I tried it on a Galaxy Tab in PCWorld it did seem to work!!!

Thanks in advance

Depends what you want out of the tablet - the Sony one is better for gaming [with the inclusion of Playstation games, but the Samsung is bigger and has many additional Apps and the brilliant TouchWiz interface [adds so many fundamental features to Android that should really be there as the norm].

Also, depending on which device you are looking to go for, it may be worth waiting for the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime. It's only going to cost £80 more than the standard Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it'll come with a keyboard dock, 32GB memory and a 1.3GHz quadcore processor. It'll also run Android 4.0.

The tablet market has really started to boom. I just bought the original Transformer and it's great - I just couldn't justify spending £479.99 on the new version.

I second what CoolBoyA has mentioned. It's worth waiting for the Asus Transformer Prime if you use your Tablet for Gaming, else the Samsung Galaxy Tab would be the best choice than Sony S, mainly because of the support offered by Samsung which has established a strong foundation in the Tablet market next to Apple, while Sony still haven't proved much. Chances are there for them to end up like HP or Blackberry if the Tablets fail to shine in 2012.

Regarding the usage of Android Phone as WiFi hotspot, it does not work with most of the Tablets, however tricking few versions of Android and using third party apps might help you doing so.

If you are looking for a high end tablet and don't want to the iPad2 then I would wait for the transformer prime, it should be out in a few weeks.

why not? surely a tethered android hotspot is just the same as any other Wifi hotspot to the tablet (or to put it another way, using a tablet with a tethered android phone should be no different to using a laptop with a tethered android phone)....Tethering the 3g TABLET on the other hand, might not be possible, particularly if it was running the Tablet-only Honeycomb.

Another point to consider is Android 4.0. The ASUS Transformer range is due to get Android 4.0 starting January 12th - Prime first, then Transformer then Slider.

@sonyjunkie: It would probably be a good idea to indicate the purpose of the device you want to buy. As mentioned the Asus Transformer Prime will be the high end non iPad device to buy soon. I own a Galaxy Tab 8.9 that is the 10.1 in a smaller form factor and it is perfect for browsing, reading and video playback with better portability. I have played with the Tablet S and thought it was very nice; Sony and Samsung both have good and exclusive additions to the Android OS so if u r deciding between the 2 then you should play around with both more trying the features out.

On another forum, someone who works for Samsung Marketing, was saying that Samsung were going to bring some nice toys to the market. One of these is going to be the a new flagship phone, the other will probably be a tablet. It maybe worth waiting for the announcements at the February conference, to see tablets are released.

Asus Transformer TF 101 or latest Transformer Prime are very good.

Both will get Android ICS 4 very soon.

The Sony Tablet S is going to get the ICS upgrade, although as to when that will be is anybodies guess.
