Well, Rihanna is considered a pop artist primarily (she herself says she's a pop artist). A pop artist that has a couple of RnB songs on each album.
So I don't know why she's even included in this thread. She's a pop artist that does RnB-influenced songs sometimes, rather than an RnB artist who does lots of pop songs. She got marketed like an RnB artist when she first came out, but that was just because RnB was dominating then tbh. I'd say Janet Jackson is more pop than Mariah Carey, because Janet Jackson was doing all that electropop and dance music in the early 00's/late 90's. I don't think Mariah ever went THAT far (apart from her remixes). |

lol i don't wanna be "that guy" but not being white is not the same as r&b (which kinda doesn't exist anymore). mariah post-mimi and destiny's child era beyonce are the only r&b type acts there

Whitney - her debut was a mix of pop and r&b but her 2nd LP was pop through and through. Whitneys career nosedived when she became an r&b act. Pop is where the moneys at - always.
Rihanna- pop recently with west idian influences and r&b. Mariah Carey- r&b heart but the label wouldn't allow it and for good reason. Pop with r&b leanings worked incredibly well for early 90s mariah. She really capitalised on r&b in the mid-late 90s. Janet Jackson - pop overall but had a strong r&b root, became pop in the 00s. Mariah and janet in joint third place. Rihanna- pop recently with west indian influences and r&b. Beyonce - rarely uses pop, a strong contemporary r&b act. And is proud of it as her discography shows. |

One Beyonce song that's definitely pop is Radio from Sasha Fierce. It sounds like it almost could be a David Guetta song tbh.

whitney was pop and soul in her first two debuts. went r&b with her third album. since then she's been considered a r&b act but still put pop and soul in them. except in the preacher's wife movie era were in the soundtrack she did gospel music. she's a pop, soul, r&b artist though.
mariah was pop in her earlier work with r&b to go with it from her debut to daydream. hardly put any pop after daydream. she started using hip hop sounds and since then has used hip hop with more r&b sounds than before. but she's still considered a pop artist despite using hip hop and r&b sounds. beyonce has always been r&b music even with destiny's child she was. she never incorporated pop sounds until b'day but it was still mostly r&b sounds except for irreplaceable and beautiful liar which were pop songs. but was seriously pop with i am sasha fierce and that became a success. that's what named her the queen of pop of the last decade. the current album is just r&b with soul sounds. she's considered an r&b artist more though. janet has been a mixed of both pop and r&b altogether. but was more r&b with her rhythm nation and janet albums. her breakthrough had some pop in it with hits like when i think of you, control and let's wait awhile. but was more pop with her velvet rope and all for you eras. so all in all considered more as a pop artist though. rihanna is just a pop artist with the occasional r&b song to go with it. she's trending to what today's music is trending in order to keep her success alive. that's why she's not putting r&b like her contemporaries do all the time. as a matter of fact i actually think she's weigh more pop than all these ladies. but she really put r&b and reggage sounds in her earlier work but has stopped that due to what mainstream music is trending to. |

lets be honest here. rihanna is only considered R&B because she isn't white. that may come across badly but there would be no arguement about her being a pop artist if she was white and blonde, for example.

Its like I remember Scott Mills once describing Alexandra Burke's Broken Heels as an R&B song, when infact its about as pure pop as you can get. I can't imagine he'd be calling the song R&B if Britney or Girls Aloud had released it. |
