She's an amalgam of Mavis and Derek, the comedy element. Why Mavis and Derek were ever axed is still a mystery as far as I'm concerned, did they create Mary to fill the void that they'd created for themselves? I can understand why the Duckworths left the programme, two elderly actors with health problems, but Mavis and Derek? One totally unnecessary axing.
I don't get Mary.
What's she supposed to do? She mostly seems to hang around in the shop without appearing to actually work there. What income does she have?
Where does she live?
Maybe I've missed something.

One presumes that she lives in the motorhome but where she parks it is a mystery. The Red Rec maybe?

I really don't like Mary, I don't like her one bit.
I agree with your post Twinkle - Mavis did leave a gaping hole in Corrie, but I actually think that Norris was very quickly brought in to fill the void back in 1999. Norris himself is a morph of Mavis and Derek, Mary is just a stupid clingon.
That said I do think that Derek's axing was appropriate, but Mavis certainly still had much to give the show. Whichever way we approach it, I think that Thelma Barlow would have left anyway. I know that I've read certain accounts that say Thelma was already planning to leave, a while before Brian 'Axeman' Park came along.
Anyway, back to Mary. I feel like wanting to screech: "Who IS she? WHO IS SHE?"
