Pam St Clement gives interview to The Sun
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage...-25-years.html She also gave an interview to the Mirror but i wasnt able to link that.
She remincises over her time on EE and says the show has too much violence in it. |

I hate how DS twisted it as "Pam SLAMS EE Violence" ... ugh.
Good interview I thought. |

I completely agree with what she says about how the execs would react to the idea for Arthur's Christmas club money storyline nowadays, and I think that's a really pertinent demonstration of how the tone of EE has changed over the years.

Years ago there was an Eastenders special showing Pat as a young woman, with Dot or Pauline. Can anyone here remember what it was called ? would love to try and find it on you tube. Thanks.

She is completely correct.
Got to its worst between 08 and '10 though thankfully toned down a bit towards the end of that year. Good interview. |

It was about Pat and Mo and it was similarly called "Pat and Mo", should be on YouTube.

I would say the baby swap which was 2011, is probably the most OTT sensationalist story EastEnders have ever done and I get the impression it is that she is referring to.

That was so ridiculous, the fact the baby died wasn't enough they had to add on the Ronnie Mitchell baby snatcher angle.
Its a shame her pleas appear to have fallen on death ears. They really should listen to their long serving cast members as its those characters who keep many viewers loyal to watching the show. |

Wow. Good on you Pam.
What she said applies to all UK soaps, not just EastEnders. |

The biggest sensationalist failure was "Who Killed Archie". A totally overcooked mess, that destroyed several characters, including Peggy and Stacey and left the show in ruins. In any case I think she is referring to the general trend towards sensationalism rather than a specific storyline. |

The baby swap story was offensive which is why its one of the most complained about storylines EVER. That speaks for itself. It led the 6pm and 10pm news bulletins for 3 days. It wasn't a small incident without warrent. It was a very serious time for the BBC.
I think that storyline is what left the show in ruins as the rewrites and reaction to the show because of it derailed all of 2011. EastEnders has only just started to recover from it 12 months later. KornerKabin is right though. Its all soaps not just EastEnders who has falled pray to this. |

Nah I disagree. On paper it was OTT and sensationalist but the episodes (at least for the first month or so before it fell apart) were actually quite good and underplayed.

I don't think Who Killed Archie was a failure, it was a gripping storyline and the climax to it brought in 16.6 million viewers - the highest rated Eastenders episode since 2003.

It was obvious Pam's decision to leave was based in part on the direction the show has gone in. We now have confirmation of that. It's the same reason Wendy Richard left. I understand viewers tastes change but EE has moved so far away from it's original premise that it's suffering with an identity crisis. It doesn't know what it is anymore.

The 69-year-old added: "A trio of people all of the same age leaving does leave a gap. Who is next in the age line? There isn't anyone."

I think she meant a matriarchal type character in their 60's. Dot isn't a matriarch and she's well into her 70's. I suppose there's Cora but she's only been a supporting character thus far and certainly hasn't been as central as Pat, Pauline and Peggy were. I suppose Pam's right. The era of the matriarch is over. I could see Carol eventually taking on that role if she stays around but I'm not optimistic about that.

I don't think Lindsey will stick around either, her storylines since her return have been dire and she had a pretty decent career inbetween her EE stints, I always thought returning for a year or so was just to give her career a little boost.
