I really love HMV and the experience of shopping around the store buying cds/dvds, but recent news about its steady decline is really worrying me! i know its inevitable with websites such as Amazon and Play.com offering the majority of products at a lower price, and with iTunes more or less dominating the music industry, but who else is with me when i say SAVE HMV!!!!!

i studied business studies at GCSE and A Level and believe me, HMV brought their decline on themselves. reluctance to adapt to the market, overpriced goods, not adopting digital sales strategies....their fault, the recession wasnt but their poor business practices were.

CEX are so much better. HMVs preowned prices are truly ridiculous.

^^This.
I once bought an old (but brand new condition) Hed Kandi CD (circa 2005) on Amazon for a fiver (inc P&P). If I bought it in HMV, it would cost me £15-20! And I'd have to track down a branch of HMV first! They've been too arrogant in thinking they don't need to adapt with the times.

I love the experience but some of the prices there are just ridiculous. And they don't even have good deals anymore. It's their own fault.

HMV prices are ridiculous. Serves it right for shutting down basically
I order onlinee 90 per cent of everything i buy so i am really not gonna be losing sleep by not physically going into the shop
I am sure the online shop will stick around though

Most of their cds are 2 for £10, and DVDs are 2 for £10...i personally think these are really good deals

The prices are awful and random. I saw Esmee Denters CD in there the other day for £15!

They haven't adapted to an ever changing market and their prices simply cannot compete with online retailers. I wouldn't be sad to see them go especially as the nearest HMV to me is 2 hours drive away.

I don't want them to go, they're our only music store on the high street.

2 DVD's for £10 is not a good deal in my eyes.

I've noticed this, you'll find something like Snatch for £3 and then you'll see like Angela's Ashes for £12. Really don't get it.

Think they bit off more than they could chew.

Their only option, IMO, is to return to being a pure music store, a specialised place to buy all sorts of music. At the minute, unless you want to buy chart albums or highly mainstream stuff, HMV is useless. They should scrap all their DVD, Blu-Ray and games business and revert back to being a music store.

It would be a real shame for HMV to go since they're the only big CD/DVD retailer left on the high street, and it would also mean losing the few Fopps left around the country, undoubtedly my favourite place to buy music. However, I agree with those who have said that they will have brought it on themselves - HMV prices are absolutely ridiculous, is it any wonder people aren't shopping at HMV when they can get almost everything in store cheaper elsewhere?

No, you can pick up a couple of cd's online for £8 if you look.

I loved that shop, they used to stock more alternative stuff than other record shops. Most of the time they were cheaper too

I haven't bought anything from HMV for years. I don't plan on going back when I can get everything I need much cheaper from Amazon/Play/iTunes.

HMV occasionally have good deals though. I got Heroes season 3 and 4 on Bluray for £15 altogether. Amazon were asking over £20 for each season! It's a bit of luck to find good deals there, but that's just like anywhere really.

HMV online is just as competitive in price as Amazon and Play. In fact Play.com is often more expensive these days. I haven't bought from there in ages.

Fopp still exists (2 in Glasgow and London, 1 in Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol & Cambridge).

Let it rot, the days of the High Street record shop are long gone anyway and HMV aren't providing us with anything we can't get cheaper over the internet. This isn't the 1990s anymore, we don't need HMV in the town centre anymore.

When That's Entertainment can charge £1.99 etc for second hand CDs and HMV want say £14.99 for BNIB then you can see why HMV is struggling.

Not only that Two Door Cinema Club's Tourist History CD is £4.97 at HMV.com.

They wanted £7.99 or 2 for £10 at my local branch in Derby.

I agree it's a shame things don't look good for them, but seeing as their products are considerably more expensive than amazon / play etc then I can't see how anyone can think they will stick around much longer! I do try and 'support the high street' and if something was only a couple of £ cheaper online then I would probably buy it in a shop anyway, but HMV is usually twice the price of amazon. Even the HMV website is overpriced!
