Does it matter where he appears though ? If he's edited out he may as well be second as fifth.

When German tv edited him from their 70-75 shows one week he was the first act

From 1977 they began to compile a second end of year chart which included all sales to the end of the year. In the original 1977 year end chart "Don't Give Up On Us" was the best seller with "Mull Of Kintyre" at (if I recall) number 13. In the second chart "Mull Of Kintyre" was the top seller of the year. The second chart was published in Music Week and the BPI 1978 Yearbook.

The top 40 part of the revised chart can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1977_in_British_music though I have the full top 100.
IIRC Mull of Kintyre is one of biggest selling UK singles ever

in January 1978 "Mull Of Kintyre" became the biggest selling UK single of all time, taking over from "She Loves You" by The Beatles. It is now the fourth having been outsold by "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen in third place (with sales combined from the 1975 and 1991 releases), "Do They Know It's Christmas" by Band Aid in second place with "Candle In The Wind 1997" by Elton John as the all time best seller.

It depends which period of TOTP you regard as 'its 70s heyday'. I started watching regularly in the fall of 1971 and as far as I'm concerned the '70s heyday' spanned 1971 to 1973. The best year in my opinion was 1972 so it's a crying shame the BBC saw fit to de-gauss the mastertapes of every single regular weekly show from that particular year - only a few isolated colour clips survive and the majority of these only exist because they were licensed by the BBC for use on the German 'Disco' programme who clearly valued the tapes more highly than the original broadcaster.

The 13 July 1972 edition featured a performance video of The Who miming to Join Together which I saw as a ten year old in black and white (few people had colour sets at the time). The appearance was memorable partly because halfway through the song Roger Daltrey leapt offstage into the audience closely followed by Pete Townshend and John Entwistle and the three of them continued to "perform" as they pushed their way through the excited crowd. As far as I am aware this was the first and only time the clip was aired in its entirety on terrestrial TV although I did see a brief snatch of it when Roger Daltrey guested on Noel Edmonds Saturday morning Multicoloured Swap Shop in the fall of 1978. I presume the original tape must have been wiped after this or it would have been featured on TOTP2.

Two years ago I was surprised and delighted to discover the video had been uploaded to YouTube in full colour and pristine condition. Although I am not a great Who fan I regard this gospel-inspired rock ditty as anthemic and the footage has a great communal party atmosphere - everyone involved is clearly enjoying themselves and having a great time which was par for the course in '72. Watching this clip it's hard to believe that 4/5 years later TOTP had degenerated into the dull, mediocre, badly lit, low level production it appears in the 1976/1977 re-runs and while I shall continue to watch these repeats (I am grateful for small mercies) and enjoy them for what they are, it is definitely tragic that most of the truly great 70s shows have been erased from history.

If anyone who has never seen it before is interested in watching a slice of 'Seventies Top Of The Pops As It Should Be' I have provided the link below (I am completely new to this forum so please forgive me if it doesn't work).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HDMCCLIG14

Alternatively you could Google 'The Who - Join Together - YouTube' and click on the photo of Pete Townshend in a cream coloured suit playing a giant harmonica. There may be a short Vevo ad to sit through before the clip starts but hopefully it will be worth the wait.

I'd be interested to hear from any other posters who (like myself) remember seeing this on TOTP back in the day.

I've just tried the link - it takes you to YouTube but it states the video has been removed which is not true - if you type 'Join Together The Who' into the search box on the same page it will take you to the right page and you can click on the top picture (Townshend with harmonica) - Sorry about that - I don't fully understand these links.

That's one thing which has struck me watching some of these old TOTPs recently - the studio audience looks bored to death. Half of them aren't even watching the act performing. They seem to be looking anywhere but.

Mind you, I would have been bored watching a lot of those pop acts because I find them dull and bland on the whole, but then I'm a fan of rock / punk / new wave / indie etc.but I still enjoy seeing a few of the old pop acts for nostalgia value.

I hadn't heard that Jack in the Box song for decades, so that took me back to those days, listening to my radio in bed with Radio Luxembourg fading in and out (why did it do that?)

1975-1977 was a low-point for TOTP due to a number of factors (particularly high MOR content in the charts, light-entertainment non-hits payola'd onto the show & a decrease in budget) but things picked up in 1978, and by the time were into 1979 be prepared for another (5-year) 'heyday'

Of the 3 from 1972 that exist , 2 are incomplete with only Dec 28th 1972 in full - and I recorded that one from German tv although GG was edited out

Even though much of 70-75 is missing I think BBC4 made a huge mistake by not showing what does exist.
The German channel Einsfestival showed most of the ones that remain yet BBC4 wrote off 64-75 in a single compilation

16th November 1972 is complete, although a B&W recording with a colour signal that could be restored. Jimmy Savile introduces The Osmonds, Strawbs, that in-concert footage of Chuck Berry's My Ding-A-Ling, a rudimentary cartoon to The Shangri-La's, Hot Chocolate, Rod Stewart, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Slade (on concert film), Gilbert O'Sullivan; The Jackson 5 soundtrack the Chart Rundown at the start and the audience dance to Neil Sedaka at the end
"Join Together" was a Who promo film, shown twice on TOTP but not filmed as part of the show - hence it's survival!

I don`t agree with those people who write off 1976/77 of as bland, dull, middle of the road. It is all a matter of personal taste and I love these shows. Mind you, I hate punk.

The utter absurdity of the censorship was shown when he was number one on one of the shows but simply left out. I suppose that is the same mentality that banned Donna Summer for making a few suggestive noises.

The GG performance edited from the 28/12/72 edition of TOTP is available on YouTube although the picture quality is not great. I have provided the link below; if this fails I would be grateful if you could let me know where I'm going wrong as my previous attempt for 'Join Together - The Who' did not work properly.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xd44PWZGzg

Last Friday I watched 'The Making of Elton John' documentary on BBC4 - it featured two very short clips of him performing 'Rocket Man' wearing ZOOM! glasses which I recognised from the Christmas Day 1972 edition of TOTP; the studio props were the same as those in the aforementioned GG clip from 28/12/72. According to the Invision Popscene TOTP Episode Guide this performance was deleted along with everything else from the 25/12/72 episode when the tape was wiped by the BBC. I don't suppose you can shed any light on this apparent anomaly?

I've burned the 2 BBC4 Elton shows onto dvd but not watched them yet.
I'm assuming that both of the Xmas shows each year were filmed at the same time . This does appear to be the case for the early to mid 70's .
Maybe the Elton performance was shot at a different time or separately to the rest of the show so a copy was held in addition to it being edited into the Xmas day show.

As you said earlier , its possible this performance has surfaced from an archive that held a copy supplied by the BBC back then.

IIRC the T-Rex on TV dvd contains a Marc Bolan performance from a wiped TOTP show but its credited on the disc to German tv , presumably as they are the ones who supplied the clip.

The BBC4 64-75 compilation includes lots of clips from lots of shows that are apparently wiped.
I'm not sure where many of those come from .

IIRC the first complete show that exists is Xmas 67 followed by Feb 68 , both aired by BBC4 a few years back fortunately

Not starting with a new track. Departure from the norm.

Glad to see they are sticking with the picture of a car wash for Rose Royce in the chart rundown.

Indeed!

Looking forward to tonight's show and it's started with a corker of a song. "Don't Believe A Word" is a magnificent song.
