Ernie, one half of our beloved gerbils Bert & Ernie, died yesterday.
I'm devastated. I know my friends will consider it the loss of "just" a gerbil, but I'm so terribly upset. I've cried for ages; it's not been the happiest new year.
I've been away for the past few days and got back this afternoon. My partner said he hadn't seen Ernie for a day or too and presumed he was just sleeping in their little house. When I checked the house, he wasn't there.
He'd passed away - Bert had buried his body with sawdust.
Bert & Ernie have such seperate, disctinct personalities - Ernie was shy and kept himself to himself, but liked to be petted and was the brains to Bert's brawn.
Am keeping an eye on Bert now. No big signs of loss at the mo - we've changed all the bedding etc and he's spent the evening setting up his bedding, getting everything how he likes it - which used to be Ernie's job. Am just wondering how he'll be tonight as he and Ernie used to sleep on top of each other - he'll miss snuggling up in the house.
I'm not really expecting much of a reply to this - just needed to get it out of my system in an environment where people are likely to understand.
