Well seeing as thevQueen carries he handbag the same way I doubt if it's done to be cool
She does not place the bag on her elbow joint but her forearm (the right way to carry it) and the hand is always at a 90 degree angle never point up with a clenched fist like your celebs (Beckham, Cole, TOWIE e.t.c ) If she carries a larger bag She carries it on her hand. |

Sometimes my bag hurts on my shoulder so I shift it down for a little while, does that offend you, OP?

It's not how they carry their bags but more the size of some of them. You see some carry around bags on their arm the size of a small suitcase. How much sh!t does someone need to carry around with them on a normal day? Even the necessities like make up, keys, tampons, phone, purse, etc. don't warrant a bag with enough room to head off on holiday for a couple of weeks.
Some really do look like the local crazy bag lady. Well said

You will see that Queen has always carried her bag on the crook of her arm

as a woman I find it extremely uncomfortable to carry a bag like that and can't see the point in buying bags with straps so short you can't sling them over your shoulder or even chest. I wear my bags like satchels.
The Queen does it more gracefully

I will usually carry a moderately heavy supermarket basket on my elbow rather than in my hand. It's probably to do with leverage and the muscles involved but for extended periods, it always seems much less effort that way.

So do I. Those with short straps anyway.
I have a camera bag that's much heavier than any handbag wiould be and never once has it crossed my mind to carry it like that, and i'm sure I never will. I hang it by my side using my, wait for it, my hand! (Or I use the shoulder strap, yes I know she hasn't got one of them). You can't even swing both your arms naturally if carrying it like her, so you lose balance too. I can't help wondering if it's a conscious or subconscious "look at my posh handbag" thing that some women have? Alternatively, and I don't know, maybe some womens' fingers aren't strong enough to carry heavy handbags for long, and men who don't have this issue just don't understand that? |

I am used to the UK press but still gobsmacked that someone thought they had a story in seeing Victoria Beckham carrying the same handbag two days in a row.

Why are you all sniping at the OP? I wouldn't dream of carrying my handbag like Dot Cotton does. They created across the body bags for a reason. |

I have Rheumatoid Arthritis so it is the most comfortable way for me, although I place my arm across my front for support.

Personally, I think it's very Essex/Wag to carry your bag like that. I don't agree that it's comfortable & it's a relatively recent affectation. My bag's either in my hand or on my shoulder, I don't muck about with all this arm-ache nonsense.

It's the most practical way to carry a handbag (as opposed to a shoulder bag). Look at older women who still carry traditional style handbags, the Queen was a good example, that's how they're carried. If you carry it in your hand you have to shift it there if you look at something in a shop or have to handle money, or hold your gloves.
It's also harder to steal on your arm rather than in your hand. Ah, maybe that's it - the OP is a frustrated bag-snatcher, foiled by bags on the arm!

I'll let her know it means she's a WAG/Essex Girl/Fashion Victim - she'll be delighted

For those suggesting it's a recent affectation:
Grace Kelly Audrey Hepburn Jackie Kennedy Onassis The more arm raised position that was being referred to is just because the bags are bigger and need to be held higher so they don't hit off your legs as you walk. That's all. |

I borrowed a bag from my sister for a job interview, I was baffled how to hold it until she explained about the crooked arm thing.
I felt like an utter ****. |

That's all. ![]() The key difference is that those old bags were much smaller with much shorter straps, and they were carried over the wrist or half way up the forearm like my grandmothers did. Like most people's grandmothers' I'd imagine. The point of the absurdity of the way (some) women carry their bags now is that it's held in the crook of the elbow with the forearm up; and the bags are large. It looks extremely affected a la Posh, and is not comfortable. Meanwhile, the women who started the trend have stopped now it's associated with chavs. Such is the fickleness of fashion... |

Oh, thank God someone else has noticed this!!! It drives me mad!!!! In London it's usually the middle class trendy snobby girls who carry their bags like this, as it is obviously the designated trendy way to carry their bags. It looks bizarrely pretentious.
