How much water does a guinea pig need daily?
:]Hannah
01-01-2012
My guinea pig has recently had surgery so I need to syringe feed her. Just wondering how much water on average a guinea pig should have a day? She's also on special food which needs to be mixed with water, does this affect the intake? Thanks

Surely your vet would be a better person to ask?

You should phone the out of hours vet. We don't know anything about your guinea pig to give you any good advice.

Vets should explain it properly and give you detailed notes for referal later as plenty of people forget oral instructions.

It's emergency only, and costs £70, but thanks anyway I'll feed her some more water and see how she gets on

Found this site which may help: http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

It suggests "10 to 40 ml water per 100 grams of body weight ( will vary with temperature, humidity, etc.)"

i'm not sure but i do think the the liquid in her feed will count towards her intake.
it may tell you on the sachet if you still have it, or it could be worth looking on the manufacturers website what they reccommend.

i use 320ml bottles for my guineas, on average one adult piggy will drink between a third and a half of one on a cool day - so around 100-150ml which fits in with the guinea lynx guideline, as all my piggies are between 850g -1kg in weight.
they're housed outdoors though and when it's warm out there, they can go through up to three quarters of a bottle, or more, per day.

for today, just give her as much as she'll take, maybe aim for 80-100ml.

Make sure to call the vet as soon as you can though and see what they say to be sure.

as always be careful when syringe feeding her not to put too much in her mouth to avoid choking

I agree with the above post, you can cause serious harm if your not careful when syringing. It can get into their lungs. I would suggest you syringe as much as you can.
Is it Critical Care you have got to feed?

at the moment my six outdoor adult pigs are only drinking about 50 to 100 ml a day between them. In summer that changes to around 500ml or more. They do get a lot of fresh veg and sometimes fruit and they seem happy enough.

anyway, hannah, glad your piggie is feeling better.
