If Nick Berry wouldn't do it should the role have been recast?

I'd have loved Steven Beale to have been brought back too.

wouldn't have been the same without nick berry, wish he did come back. I think he's not interested in acting or his career anymore but would have been nice to have seen him say goodbye to pat.

the two wicksy's were the links between the old pat and later pat if that makes sense.

Nick Berry wasn't asked, Simon should have returned but only Nick can play him. You cannot recast Wicksy.

We got David, by far the better character and actor. His intro was pretty good, and I'll be sad to see him leave.

Nick Berry was asked and he said no, and there's no point recasting him, that'd just remove the character's history and make his return irrelevant. Besides, it makes sense that Simon wouldn't return, he'd be pushed to get a plane from New Zealand at such short notice, and they're expensive - we've already been told he's in financial trouble.

Yes but he should be there for the funeral, not matter how expensive the flight.

If Ricky has called Simon on the 30th, and got straight on the plane, he would have been back by the 1st. Tired and jetlagged yes, but thats a small price to pay to see your mother for the last time.

I don't think Nick Berry was asked at all, because he was interviewed a few months back and he said he'd be willing to for Pam's sake, as Michael French has also done.

I think the writers thought there was more mileage with David, with his daughter, ex-wife, enemies Derek and Ian around, whereas only fans of a certain age will be able to remember Simon, even though his arc with Pat was more dramatic and leaned more on her salty past than anything with David.

If you remember, in 1996, David actually left on good terms with Pat, there was no ill feeling, David fled the square as he couldnt handle the combined guilt of not being to deal with Joe and his involvment with Ian's shooting. He and Pat were fine when he left, so while tonights showdown brought back some of his deep-seated resentment, just the same could have been achieved with Simon, whose very fatherhood was treated like a plaything by a vengeful Pat in the 80's.

Both characters were worthy of a return, and both should have returned. When Frank died three of his clan came back...we only needed two for this one.

I believe Nick Berry was asked but it "wasn't meant to be", he would have been a TREMENDOUS boost and the BBC who would given him double for the story, according to Simon's page on wikipedia.

As for Steven Beale. yeah let's bring back the guy who tried to KILL her.

Why wasnt it meant to be?

Cos teenagers would say 'who'?

More pandering.

And that the two wickseys have never been seen on screen together. Glorious opportunity missed.

I only watched as I was led to believe Simon would be making an appearance Hugely disappointed that he wasn't there. I don't usually watch EE but had seen this online

Pat already had 2 other links from her past, Janine and Ricky. While it was good for David to come back, it wasn't that necessary for Simon to be there.

I thought Simon's non appearance was very noticeable. I won't deny there's more scope for David but that doesn't mean Simon is irrelevant. I don't think Pat came into it really. David's return gives storylines to the Brannings. Simon's return doesn't. It's clear from tonight's shoe-horning in of the Brannings that everything revolves around them.

FYI, the actor who played Simon said he would return but wasn't asked.

It is strange that he was obviously closer to Pat over the years they haven't been onscreen than David was, since she visited him quite often but he didn't make it. Although that can be argued why he wasn't needed, they have offscreen had many times to make up with each other whereas David hasn't.

How can those tenuous 'links' you just mentioned possibly replicate an actual child.

Yes, Janine and Ricky as her her stepchildren are important to her...but ahead of her own sons?

Never.

Of course it was noticeable. Any time a child doesnt return to see a parent die, its noticeable, bloody annoying too. .

I think Janine was as important to her as her own sons as she said, she was the only little girl she had. The other "children" she took in over the years were not raised by her from childhood like Janine was.

Nick Berry probably turned them down plus with John Yorke being the head of drama I would imagine it was easier to get Michael over from Casualty for a few episodes.

Maybe be satisfied that at least one of them returned in the past some characters etc. Pauline didn't get a look in.

I didn't say they did replicate an actual child, but Pat didn't see things like that anyway.

She would have always seen Ricky and Janine like her own children, so the fact they were not her biological children doesn't really come into it.

Even at the end, despite all the crap Janine has put her through, Pat still acted like her mum.

I don't believe that he wasn't asked. I'm sure he was and he just turned them down.

They could've namechecked him; have the flight delayed so he wasn't in tonight's episode. I hope he appears 'off screen' for the funeral itself - Bianca, Carol or David saying they've just seen him, just to give an authentic edge to it.
