Who should perform at the 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony?

Truthfully...it should be Alexandra Burke, because she's the most capable and versatile live British performer, by a country freaking mile at the minute. She could do a large scale, energetic, dance based number with a cast of thousands in one number, then move onto some stirring powerhouse ballad. No one would be bored.

They'll probably go with something more predictable like Adele or Leona Lewis, because of greater international name recognition. But if they really want to showcase the breadth and versatility of British talent, they should go with Alexandra.

Mel C is always saying she is against reforming. She was saying she would never reform with the girls mere weeks before their reunion conference in 2007.

Honestly, the Spice Girls would be an embarasment. Yes they were huge internationally for a few years, but they are not exactly the Beatles, as far a credibility goes. Why not go for Bannarama too? (they were essentially the Spice Girls of the 1980's). Britain is a nation that produces world class pop artists with regularity.

Having to wheel out some long retiired, geriatric, manufactured girlband (of dubious talent) just because "Americans would recognise them" just seems a bit tragic. As a nation, we should be better than that.

I'd rather they got out Take That to perform Paitience or Rule The World, or something like that. Take THat might not have the same international recognition that the Spice Girls had, but they are still a current group, who are much more indicative of British talent (notably in Barlow's songwriting) than the Spice Girls ever were.

Adele is a shoe-in... if she's not on her sick bed again. Stop smoking you plank.

Leona Lewis would be pretty amazing with her semi-operatic vocals. She may not have the credibility that Adele does, but that means diddly squat. Give her a song that's all about triumph and winning and overcoming the odds with a big key change and a belting finish and we'll see you there at the end as the confetti cannons get triggered.

Spice Girls would be great, but they won't do it. They know they're past it, we know they're past it, they're the biggest female group in history, but really... no.

That's 2 females in. Adele + Leona.

For males, I'd say they're going to bank on having Paul McCartney, a member of the most legendary band of all time... and perhaps someone more modern and enormous, like Coldplay (Viva La Vida would be amazing for the Olympics)

Or, if they really want to push the boat out, they'll have a hybrid supergroup for the show, with Paul McCartney, Brian May, Elton John & Matt Bellamy of Muse. I would actually cut off my jaw and allow it to drop to the floor in awe at the sight of that.

The reality of the situation is they're going to have Alexandra Burke and Leona Lewis doing a duet and then Ed Sheeran will duet with Susan Boyle in a dreery as hell finale. Hoorah for London.

The "hybrid supergroup" would be embarrassing. Hasn't anyone learned anything from the "Superheavy" fiasco (a so-called super-group consisting of Mick Jagger, Damian Marley, Dave Stewart, A..R Rahman and Joss Stone). Literally, no one cared. Putting a bunch of faded solo superstars on stage together to relive past glories never ends well.

Ed Sheeran and Susan Boyle sounds like a joke (particularly because both are quite physically odd looking, so it'd make a bizarre visual), but Alexandra and Leona doing a duet is not a terrible idea at all. It's not as if there are many singers in the UK better than either of them (both of them are probably a bit more talented than the more succesful Adele). And for some reason, I think singing with Alexandra would bring out a bit more competitive "fire" in Leona's singing than we are used to seeing.

the exposure is more than enough compensation for an artist, it would be the biggest TV audience they have ever played to by some distance (aside from Leona, who of course has already appeared at the Beijing closing ceremony)

Shakira. I know she's not British but you can't have a sporting extravaganza without her.

Coldplay
Susan Boyle
Adele”

Robbie Williams should be there too he's the UK's top selling album artist this century according to the Guiness World Records with with sales of 13,339,555 to October 2010.

Am thinking that now he is signed to Universal (same as Take That) that they will probably sing as a five piece.

Kylie O.B.E... She's half British with a duel passport as her Mother was born and bred in Wales, and she's paid £millions in tax in this country for 25 years. She's already done the 2000 Olympics in Sydney to 4.2billion people, and is well used to huge crowds and only sings live (never lipsyncs). She's also well known and loved as a global star, and is celebrating her 25 years in the music industry this year.

Much as I love Kylie, I really don't think she should perform at the London Olympics. She is universally known as an Aussie and it would be silly for the UK to let the world believe they didn't have enough home grown talent.

this is the sticking point. despite her taxes paid and her welsh roots. she is a very famous austrailian and she has already represented her home country in the same scenario. it is important the person chosen represents the uk in the same way kylie did her country proud.

Kylie is an Australian icon. The British would be a laughing stock if she performed.

Mel C is one of the most eager to do it!

Mel hasn't been approached personally but Simon Fuller has been.
Unfortunately it's a dead end because two of them will not budge.
It's strained. Five women, some with incredibly inflated egos. Four of them are certainly deluded in terms of their current status in the industry.
What should be a fairly simple discussion between the six of them is actually like a tense political negotiation.
I do not envy Simon Fuller in that respect - there are petty envies, egos, erratic personalities and group politics - one word out of place and certain members simply block all contact for weeks on end.

It's maddening.

I would love to see it happen though.

Imagine big productions of Viva Forever and the 2007/8 Reprise Version of Spice Up Your Life. It could genuinely be amazing.

Oh my goodness

Are people actually suggesting Susan Boyle, Florence and the Machine, and Alexandra Burke for the OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONY?

Have a word with yourselves, please.

I beg you.
