I think its disrespectful that shes not returning for the funeral but I don't think the actress was even asked back. Same with Simon Wicks and Peggy Mitchell.

Is the BBC's budget tight or something.

Or is this their punishment for leaving in the first place.

In my mind I have to believe the actors who played Dianne and Simon were asked - but refused. Lot's of people have said Nick Berry said he would return but wasn't asked. However I've seen nothing to prove that is a fact.

It makes no sense how they could include someone like Derrek Branning but not the rest of Pat's close family. It would have made it a lot more emotional for me.

It's simple.

The Brannings are the be all and end all for EE now. David's return could give them a storyline. Diane and Simon's returns couldn't. Pat dying from a combination of her heart and cancer gives Tanya's cancer storyline an extra dimension. And finally, Derek being involved in Pat's final scenes as well as their ''history'' becoming prominent in her final days helps to make him look like the big villain they want us to believe he is.

Nick Berry stated on tv he'd be willing to return. We can only assume he wasn't asked. Sophie Laurence (Diane) has stated she wouldn't mind popping back for the odd episode. Once again, we have to assume she wasn't asked.

Diane was back (and lesbian, to boot!) for Frank's funeral. Does the character live in france now? A couple of times last night, her photo appeared on screen.

A shame that Diane and Simon aren't coming bak, but that's always the way with soap funerals.

That Derek Branning is 'orrible.

Frank has another daughter called Claire, who won't be returning either.

Neither will Joe, Steven, Simon and Natalie (Barry's wife).

Nick Berry stated in an interview just last month that he'd never been asked to return to EastEnders once since leaving 21 years ago. He said he'd love to have gone back briefly for Pam's exit. I'm sure there was even a DS article on it.

As for Sophie Lawrence I'm guessing they couldnt be bothered to ask her back either. She returned for Frank's funeral in 2008 and said she loved being back and although she wasnt up for a full time return she said that she would love to do another brief stint for a few episode's in the future. She said that on the behind-the-scenes show which aired after Frank's funeral.

Claire wasn't close to Pat like Diane was. Steven tried to kill Pat so I think he can be forgiven for not turning up, Natalie probably wouldn't go if she thought Janine would be there, Albert Square has bad memories for Joe what with his schizophrenia so I can see why he wouldn't return.

The money storyline has been used as an excuse for Simon, but he should still be there. His mother was on the verge of losing her house because of him.

Whilst I agree it would be more realistic if people like Diane and Simon returned for the funeral, it would only be a one off appearance and they don't usually bring anyone back unless they are on a contract.

Does anyone know how long David is going to be around for?

Yes i think they can get away with the absence of Clare, Steven, Natalie and Joe for the reasons you stated. Also Clare lives in New Zealand now (as mentioned at Frank's funeral) which is a long way to travel for the funeral of a woman she was never close to even if she was her stepmother.

I'm disapointed by Simon, Peggy and Diane's absences though.

They've brought characters back for one or two episodes in the past, Sonia, Diane, Mickey and Dr Legg all spring to mind.

I am not particularly bothered that Simon hasn't returned to be honest he wasn't a particularly interesting character when he was in it, all I remember is him wandering around looking sulky not able to make his mind up about Cindy, other than the Cindy/Steven/Ian storyline I am struggling to remember anything else about him, nick berry in my opinion isnt a very good actor, he seemed to have the same bored look on his face in every scene

Diane on the other hand I would like to see back, she has a lot of potential as a character, she was bright and interesting and very much a free spirit, different to a lot of the characters in it now, when the Butcher clan returned I was really hoping Diane would be with them, and was disappointed when she wasn't
