Rihanna
Katy Perry

I suppose I could list many but none have come close to Adele this year.

Beyonce hasn't this year but we know that she can.

well katy and rihanna are singles artists but overtime their albums sell slowly but surely. beyonce barely hit the platinum mark at the end of the year. britney spears can barely sell albums now. is she now considered a singles artist now?

TBH this year alone album sales in the UK have rocketed so in which case anyone with willing to promote.

But in the Us probabl at the mo Buble, Swift, Adele even Madonna only scraped 700,000+ with Hard Candy and less with Celebration

well its obvious that artists fanbase these days just either buy the single instead of the album. since the invention of the digital singles downloads, album sales have gone down. but album sales were doing okay when digital downloads came in the middle of the 2000's and got the respect from mainstream music. the album sales had gone down in the late 2000's. but last year artists like adele and lady gaga have made album sales go up mostly adele with her monster album 21 which in the u.s. has sold 5 and a half million copies and 16 million worldwide. also, it can depend on the artist name because if it came in before the invention of itunes or anything like that, the fans will want to buy the album to see what the songs are like instead of just having to buy any singles digitally.

today's artists have come in now in an era were now singles sell and before it was the other way around albums sold well and singles would sell gold to a million. physical sales highest was probably like 2 or 3 million. even in the early 2000's album sales were doing fine. there are very few artists today that can sell albums. as we mentioned adele and gaga the only ones so far that can do that from today's era. while others are considered singles artists.

singles artists like katy perry and rihanna have made singles sell pretty well as their album sales are on the low side. perry who came on to the scene mainstream in 2008 with her singles i kissed a girl and hot n cold which became mega hits and sold very well. her album one of the boys was poorly reviewed by critics but the album in 2011 in the u.s. barely went passed the million mark. her follow up teenage dream, well the singles have been met with great success. she's had 6 singles out from that album. all 6 of them have had great success on radio and sales as well. she even tied michael jackson's record for most no.1's in one album in america during his bad album. so far perry is struggling to get that 6th single to no.1 the farthest it has gone is at no.3. it's still stuck at that position for a while now. it's also falling apart on the itunes charts too. so it looks like this song won't be no.1 probably. going back to the album, well it was a better reviewed album but still mixed reviews from critics. since she's released half of her album the fans should just go out and buy the album instead of having to just purchase the singles if they've been impressed with all 6 they've heard so far.

however, while getting the 5 single no.1, perry has used to release a remix and reduce the price of the song to give Perry a sixth number-one song has been criticized by some, noting that this is not Perry's first time adding a featured guest to her songs in order to boost sales. Billboard, which compiles the charts, have issued multiple columns defending Perry and Capitol, underlining that they are operating under chart rules and that numerous other acts, such as Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Britney Spears, used the same tactics for charting purposes over the years, while numerous acts such as the Beatles, Taylor Swift and The Righteous Brothers have had multiple versions a song count towards the same charting single's total.

rihanna has also been considered a singles artist as well. however, her u.s. album numbers like perry aren't great numbers either. she so far hasn't gotten a number one album in the u.s. but her singles have been successful, she already has 11 no.1's so far. she's released 6 albums in nearly 7 years. it wouldn't come to a surprise if she does release another album in 2012. most recently, she was named the best selling digital artist of all time to date. due to high single sales. though her albums dont sell too good but her talent has gotten better since she debuted. her album sales have started to sell pretty good slowly. out of her 6 albums 2 of them have gone on to be classics and sell well. those are good girl gone bad considered her breakthrough album and loud her last album before her current album talk that talk was released. her current album is selling pretty well too so it looks like it might be a smash hit especially its lead single going on to be no.1 the last couple months of 2011. so rihanna can be considered a little bit of an albums artist but borderline though. due to them worldwide figures of course. as rihanna progresses as an artist she'll eventually become an albums artist.

lady gaga has become an albums artist. maybe when she first came in people thought she was gonna be a singles artist but her first two singles just dance and poker face as well as the other singles from her debut proved that she can be a force to be rekon with. as did her second album but maybe some of her fanbase probably thought she was still a singles artist but after bad romance was released her albums began to sell and that's when she has been considered both a singles and albums artist. with her third album she released, gaga went in a different direction by releasing a pure pop/rock 80's release. which is the opposite of what today's music on radio is playing. some of her fanbase agreed to it and some didnt. it was a mixed reaction but still met with success despite it. also, during her opening week, amazon for a couple days had the album for 99 cents so the album can sell a million. the third album sold 1.1 million with 440,000 copies of them were at amazon. Billboard has since changed its rules so that scoring a #1 album by lowering the price of your LP will be a thing of the past. but the singles didn't sell like the others. From Billboard, “Unit sales for albums priced below $3.49 during their first four weeks of release will not be eligible for inclusion on the Billboard album charts and will not count towards sales data presented by Nielsen SoundScan. The rule also applies to reissued titles.”

since gaga has now been considered an albums artist and her fanbase has now decided to buy the album to see what kind of songs gaga will have. the album sales have gone down but its managed to be a success though despite mixed reaction. so far the album has released 5 singles as 4 of them have hit the top 10. the 5th single has so far been having trouble becoming a hit and some argue its her best song from the album, the farthest it went was at no.29. it's still performing right now on the charts. since this is the first time lady gaga has released a 5th single in her career what if people already have the album as a whole and people buying the single the week of the album's release. because her current single received strong digital downloads. which shows that gaga isn't a singles artist either. since she hasn't had a song sell the 4 million or up download because she's turning into an albums artist.

adele was an unexpected success in 2011. she made album sales go up and made people buy albums again. album sales hadn't been that up since 2004 as that was the last year of albums selling well and before the digital era started to come in. in the u.s., the album has sold 5.8 million and so far worldwide, 21 adele's monster album has sold 16 million so far. her 2 singles in 2011 became no.1 hits selling over the 5 and 3 million digital marks. this is adele's 2nd album and not her debut. her debut wasn't a smash either. her sales for her debut only sold 6.5 million worldwide and 1.7 million in the u.s. her big single from her debut only sold 1.2 million downloads. let's what adele will do for her follow up. will it be a success like her 21 album or will it just sell half of what 21 is selling right now? her fanbase has the album and have grown to like her too so she's without a doubt an albums artist. this current album might even be the come on over of digital era.

veteran artists from the 2000's beyonce and britney spears who came around in the late 90's when album sales at the time were selling well and their fanbases grew up around buying the album wanting to see what would happen. meanwhile, in this era the past nearly 7 years digital downloads have taken over mainstream music now and all you have to do is just get the single and that's it. but that's not the case for beyonce's fanbase. her fanbase are still believers in buying albums and that's why her albums always sell but may not be the case for spears anymore. she's now considered a singles artist now maybe in part of her struggle she had in the mid-2000's while not releasing any music. her last album before the one she released in 2011 had strong opening week sales of 505,000 copies though but her album she released in 2011 had low opening week sales of 276,000 copies. so far the album has sold 752,000 copies so far. the singles have met success though on the radio.

in terms of beyonce, her fans are more conditioned to buy full albums. Beyonce was around toward the end of albums selling quickly and still can sell albums much faster than today's artists can even spears as well. though her current album is struggling to get a hit from her album but her album sales are still strong for today's digital era. the farthest it's sold so far is a little more than a million so far. her album is the complete opposite of what today's music is trending to. she even said prior to the album that it's a hardcore r&b album going back to the 80's and 90's. which is quite a risk she took, a risk that adele and gaga took which turned out to work for them but not the case for her. we all know she has alot to give left in the tank for her so i dont think this aint her peak yet.

well so far as we move into 2012 now, we probably wont see the kind of numbers adele had. but adele certainly saved music in 2011. making people buy albums again and making music that's for real and it's amazing the kind of success she had on the radio was so amazing.

That paragraph was tl;dr but I saw the Gaga bits and you really are putting your own opinions as fact. If 4 out of 5 singles hit the top 10, the you are hardly "turning into an albums artist"...

Also, Taylor Swift and Rihanna (with Rated R) also reduced the price of their albums on a certain digital retailer but it didn't have the mass scale of sales that Gaga's did- do everybody ignores it.

Guess Caro Emerald is an album seller, no top 40 hit but made top 3 and stayed in the top 10 for about 10 weeks

It's not all about getting into the charts
You're pretty narrow minded if you only like chart stuff. Stuff outside the charts is better anyway, in my opinion.

Some of the established acts like Rod Stewart still sell albums in reasonable quantities.

Narrow minded? Bit of a strange thing to say.

Well in the past few years, the million selling albums we've had are...

Loud (Rihanna)
Do-Wops and Hooligans (Bruno Mars)
21 (Adele)
19 (Adele)
Progress (Take That)
The Circus (Take That)
Lungs (Florence and the Machine)
Funhouse (Pink)
The Fame (Lady GaGa)
The E.N.D (Black Eyed Peas)
The Defamation of Strickland Banks (Plan B)
Christmas (Michael Buble)
Crazy Love (Michael Buble)
I Am Sasha Fierce (Beyonce)
The Script (The Script)
I Dreamed A Dream (Susan Boyle)
JLS (JLS)

Right now Katy Perry is on 930K with Teenage Dream so she'll probably make it this year, Coldplay are on 930K with Mylo Xyloto so they'll make it (they're still top ten), Alicia Keys is on about 920K with The Element Of Freedom so she might make it when her next album is out and Jessie J with 'Who You Are' and Lady GaGa with 'Born This Way' will probably make it this year as they're on about 800K each. Oh, and Rebecca Ferguson's debut is already on 400K and will probably be a consistant seller, Rihanna's latest album is already double platinum, One Direction are already double platinum and Olly Murs's both albums are double platinum (with his second one still top ten, so he might end up making a million too). Plus Eminem has had a few million sellers, too, but not recently. Oh, and Ed Sheeran is on about 750K and still top ten, so him too.

So they're the artists that can sell albums in the UK at least.
